All looks really good but i'm really disappointed at the lack of a new notification system.

I agree. They could have done better. Some notifications do not need to be modal, and with folders how are you going to know if an app in a folder needs your attention?

Pausing apps in the background isn't multitasking. Why can't my Twitter app be getting tweets in the background? Why can't Mail be downloading mail from my various accounts in the background?

Why can't I run two applications on the screen at once? I'd love to have Mail on the top two-thirds, and my Twitter feed on the bottom third.

This is completely unimaginative. Apple should be ashamed to develop such an underwhelming OS update.

FAIL.

And to give people all that, the phone would have to be twice it's size to accommodate the huge battery it would need to be able to make it through a full day with all that running, and then people would posting the internet cliche "FAIL" tag to the form factor. Given the current state of the tech, and what it requires to feed it, this is far from a failure, this is a fantastic compromise.

I has to be "embedded at the OS level." The OS has to support it doesn't it?

You will not receive ads in the stock Apple apps or in the OS itself. It will only be in 3rd party apps.

How does it feel to waste your time complaining about something when your premises are incorrect?

You know I was not expecting any of the usual Hardware info like: New Iphone, New MacBook Pro's or when the exact date for the iPad 3G will be coming out. I do have one major beef about all this. Steve Jobs and Company do not usually open up to Q and A that often and these A S S Clown Media people asked some of the worse questions ever. Major FAIL go to the clown that was pushing his own website to Apple.

All in all. I am leaning towards keeping my 3GS. If the phone changes design wise then i will get the new one.

Do you even know what your talking about? This is to replace the crappy ads in FREE APPS. Ads are going to be there anyway, apple is just making them a bit more interesting now. How the hell could that be a bad thing?

I run about 10 apps on my iPhone now that have ads built in already. Whats the big deal?

I love my apple products, but the hubris of Steve Jobs on something like this is hilarious. "We have a ton of low priced and free ads, which has forced developers to put ads into their apps that we think, frankly, suck." So what does Apple do?

iAds

Now, not only will you still get ads in your app, Apple is going to take 60% of the profit. Does this mean that app developers will be allowed to use their own ads as well, or if they have ads it has to go iAds? If it's the latter, I would be giving Apple a big F-You.

It looks like the iPad is going to fall on the same update cycle as the ipod touch. My prediction is a camera across the lineup of ipod touch and ipads late fall.
Also, with the way skype is now able to implement with the background, do you see verizon doing a data only plan for the iphone with skype?

Jobs said there would be no need to quit apps- they could all run concurrently. But there must be some kind of limit of the number of apps running simultaneously?! Or maybe this was hinting at a more powerful piece of iphone hardware than exists at the moment?

It will only be present in apps where the developer chooses an ad-based model. I sincerely doubt Apple is going to stick ads in their basic apps (like Mail or Contacts). And I'm guessing most developers will go the way they have up until now -- you can choose a paid version of the app with no ads or a free version with ads. I also don't believe Apple will require developers to use iAds -- if they have their own mechanism for delivering ads, I'm sure they can keep using it.

ETA: Apple is going to be taking 40% and giving the developer 60%, not the other way around. I'm not familiar with the economics of on-line ads, so I don't know how that compares to the rates for other ad brokers.

wow apple really has to take a main feature from the ipad just to make os 4.0 look ok?

i mean i already can do all this stuff. worse update ever. looks like the iphone is almost dead to other phones.

Fixed that for you.

If iAd can drive more revenue to developers and do it in a way that is better than the current system Im all for it.
