Sigh, once again Cook shows us his incompetence. Jobs picked the perfect screen size. Only an idiot would change it to a larger size. You would think after seeing so few sales from the 12.9" that he would get the hint that no one likes to carry around a ginormous device. So, instead of making the 9.7" smaller by squeezing the bezel, he went the other way! So now buyers have to chose between big and bigger. The size differential between the two Pro devices are now too narrow. This is just plain dumb.

I think you don't get the point of the "Pro" version: It must compete with the Surface Pro (now 12.3") and try to be a computer replacement for many. Therefore as big a display as possible in a body as small as possible. I personally am happy with the display size increase.

If Apple really wanted to increase iPad sales, they would offer matte black and red as new color options!

I've been waiting months for the update, so I'm ordering the 12.9 Ipad. But come on Apple, you couldn't even give me bluetooth 5? We're still at 4.2? Really?

I was all set to buy the new 10.5" iPad... and then I saw the ugly protruding rear camera.
*sigh*
Empty shopping basket.....
Really?

I agree with you it would be great to include but very understandable why it is not included. Apple usually waits for the dust to settle for a long time for any standard before including it. Not a deal breaker for me but would have been nice to have the longer range and dual device connections...

Yup.

I use my (current) ipad without a case, and have it flat on the table.

I was thinking of upgrading to an iPad Pro, for the pencil support.
And would definitely want to continue to use it without a case, and flat on a table.
And a protruding camera lens makes that a non-starter.

That does make sense. Perhaps you can get a matching height stick-on, rubberized "nub" like the laptops to even it out :)

I never really thought about the uneven surface thing. Never bothered me with my iPhone but i don't "work" on my iPhone on a desk. That can suck for people using the iPad on tables with no case...

Yeah.
I'm having a look at cases at the moment. I don't really want a cased iPad, but may have to compromise.

There's a news story just posted on macrumors about new Logitech cases that look interesting.

The 12.9" "upgrade" seems about as incremental as you can get. This reminds me of when the "new iPad"- iPad 3 came out
.... probably need to wait another year for a true redesign of the 12.9 inch As a musician I continue to wait for staff pad to stop with their Microsoft surface exclusivity and bring it to iOS Frustrating.

Too bad they're still Lightning and not USB-C/TB3 on the HW side.

Combined with missing features in iOS 11, this still make these a skip for me (no mention of mouse support, multi-user accounts, etc).

Still, the Files app was a surprise.

Sadly Apple is checking things off the "why-isn't-this-in-there-yet" list one at a time, a year at a time...

May be 2020 will be the year of Jubilee, when they finally have added everything to make the iPad a suitable laptop replacement.

basically it added true tone display, brighter and faster. Not much. 10.5 is a bigger deal.

The key for a "pro" device is not the hardware specs, it's the software+peripheral connectivity.

Thinking about picking up the 10.5" iPP but only if it comes with 4GB DRAM and has accelerated 4K HEVC 10bit HDR 60fps playback capabilities which is standard on Android devices since like 2015.

Got to imagine it will to power some of the new IOS 11 features

I won't be buying another iPad until they transition to OLED. IMO, LCD defeats the purpose of having a DCI-P3 color gamut. I'm quite content to keep on rocking my iPad Mini 2 with it's superior PPI until then.

It's really a shame that Apple has seemingly given up on the iPad Mini.

Office will never be free

Are you sure?

Microsoft Makes Office Apps Free for Small PCs and Tablets
Definition of "small" devices: Under 10.1 inches for free Office, nine inches or less for free Windows.

It doesn't wobble at all though not on the 9.7 pro

I think, for a lot people, with ios 11 it is a real laptop replacement.
Drag and drop, filesysteem, high speed lightning connection(with adapters, i know...)
Was hoping for a trackpad on the smart keyboard, that has the same functions as the long press on the virtual keyboard), and a slightly altered gui for more app icons on screen.
And i am disappointed with the fact that the 12.9 didn' t get the same redesign as the 10.5 inch with smaller bezels.
But i am satisfied, for now....

I have a 9.7" iPad Pro and the thing doesn't wobble on a table at all. My guess is that the whole device is so wide that the protruding camera is simply a non-issue. I don't foresee this being an issue for the larger iPads either.
