glassy or matte

Hard to tell the screen, it appears like the MATTE version of the MBP, silver bezel, bezel at all. AND, it would be hard to make it that THIN with GLASS on it.

But, the pictures on the buy it now screen seem to look like GLASSY but it could just be standard apple images stock

Firstly my critical comments:

Why the heck does the 11" model not have the SD card slot like the 13" model?!?

That backup dongle is not discussed as to how it interfaces with the Mac. Is it the world's largest and funniest shape SD card?

No backlit keyboard? An option please preferably with a way to default it off and turn it on when power is not critical.

No LTE or 3G? Bad.

Now my supportive comments (I'll keep it brief).

Mac App Store. Yay!

Rocketman

My Air will be scratched within 7 days of ownership.

I think it's right on the board, so no, not user upgradable (assuming you could even get to it - which you can't easily.

The tech spec shows a regular SODIM. ???

Anyway, the pricing seems reasonable and the specs look good. This should sell better than any previous MBA.

cheers

No IR Port???

Can anyone confirm these do NOT have IR ports? If they don't, that seems like a HUGE mistake. Wouldn't presentations be a big deal for these?

there also appears to be a new i7 processor option for the 15 and 17 inch macbook pros: 2.8 ghz.

Loved it!

I loved the new Lion features and the MBA, I wish I could justify purchasing it but I don´t since I already have a MBP, iPad and iMac but if my wife wants it I´m all for it. She only uses my MBP for reading email, web surfing, iphoto and the occasional word or excel file... she´ll love the MBA for that. And I´m sure hundreds of thousands more will love it also. Sure there are windows netbooks that cost half as much and do the same things... but the experience of doing it on a mac is more than worth the price difference.

All cars can take you from point A to point B, but the experience is not the same in all.

Deal.

When I saw 2GB I was :( but if I can upgrade to 4gb I am :)

It is a value based product for a travelling user. Even with the slower CPU I'll gladly hand in my MB Pro and go with one.

I would have liked a slight bump in CPU spec's...but what can you do, they want the battery life can't fight the laws of nature.

The lack of CPU will more than be made up with the bump to 1440x900.

The C2D in my MBP gets ridiculously, skin searingly hot... are these C2D's going to be any different?

edit... So we're going to get the App Store on Snow Leopard, which means that TWO new features justify an entire OS release? Launch Pad and Mission Control... and I really don't see "Full Screen Apps" as a major new features, since this can be implemented in an application currently. I thought Snow Leopard was supposed to be the infrastructure release in advance of the next release being a feature release.

I'll be buying one.

But, unfortunately, I think the real news from this event is something not discussed at all.

My mother died of pancreatic cancer; I know what terminal cancer looks like, and it looks like Steve Jobs does now.

I was shocked at how physically weak he looks and sounds, how diminished his personal energy was, and how he fumbled portions of his presentation, which is very unlike him. The parade of Apple employees presenting was obviously intended to take some of the burden off of him and to get the audience used to seeing other people as the face of Apple.

Steve clearly wants to keep Apple moving forward personally as long as he possibly can. I desperately wish him all the best, but I think the prognosis is not at all good.

This makes me very, very sad.
I agree. My mother passed away from cancer and I see it too. Steve also looked a bit thinner.

Don't be surprised if we lose Steve over the next year.

USB stick - Software Delivery Model

So, I'm thinking about the USB stick software reinstall, nifty. . . Who does it leave out? Software box vendors. The future of Apple is AppStore. The loser is any vendor who lives to sell boxed software. Amazon, WalMart, BestBuy, Egghead, etc. That revenue (40%) goes to Cupertino here-on-out.;)

Preemptive strike

Before the PC whiners get in here there are plenty of PC's being sold with weaker specs and higher price tags.

The MBA clearly beats out Dell's Adamo, their only comparable machine.

Nobody wants to hear your rants about $400 Atom powered plastic machines with Intel GMA graphics and screens from a portable DVD player.

The MBA is a high quality thin and light with plenty of power and storage for 90% of users that is priced very competitively if not cheaper then comparable PCs.

Looks: A+
$$$ Value: F

They really needed to price these things below the MacBook.
For the same cost of the 11" MBA, you can get a 13" MB with almost a double the speed processor, DVD burner, full set of hook ups and better full use battery.

It's a USB drive. You couldn't use it with the 11" if it wasn't.

Doesn't appear to have one. No option to add remote at config page.

Looks nice but got same limitations as the original MBA

It looks to me that the only thing great about this new MBA is that you can impress others with it. I have the original MBA when it first came out. When novelty wears out, there's nothing great about it I can think of.

The suckiest thing is the slow single USB port. And the clunky superdrive for the MBA is so slow (and bulky too, if you think about it) and sometimes faulty. Then there's no ethernet port either. And it isn't exactly light as netbook out there (which some have 2 usb ports).

Oh, and did I mention that it's S....L....O....W....?!

Man, MR's servers must be on overdrive with all of the responses to the Back to the Mac conference. It's taking forever to get a reply in. Hope everyone calms down.

I don't want anyone to ever call me a hater again :

Hater! Nah, just kidding. Heck, most of us are just jealous. But at these prices, we won't be for long.

1.4ghz processors!!! you start running video on this thing, it's going to get hot as hell...and only 2 gbs of ram

That's where the NVidia chip steps in to help with the video rendering load. I wouldn't expect to do heavy FCP production on the 11" 1.4GHz Air, though.

Must....resist.....getting......11....inch.....Air.....

Resistance... is futile.
