Apple is really pushing the limits in Europe.
They charge €500,00 more than in the US (if you convert US$ into €) and remove the charger.
As an European customer, Apple starts to lose all that appeal it once had...
The M5 MBP is cheaper than the previous MBP. In Germany and France the 14" M5 starts at €1,799 vs the M4’s launch price of €1,899. In Ireland the 14" M5 starts at €1,849 vs the M4 for €1,949.

So prices are lower in the EU than they were even if you spend more money on the charger.

The increased SSD speeds are not as groundbreaking as they may seem.
MacBook Pro M43318.6 / 2899.5
MacBook Pro M33359.1 / 2956.3

The M4 Pro has speeds around 6700W/5400R. So doubling the M4 results gets you...about the same speed as the existing M4 Pro MacBooks.
Even my M1 Max has these speeds

Someone who cares enough about these things to pay extra for a Pro should really be getting an Mx Pro chip for a few hundred more. It's a small percent of the total when getting an MBP anyways. Also you're totally wrong about Thunderbolt 5. Thunderbolt 5 is only available in M4 Pro and M4 Max MacBook Pros
My bad posting TB5 for the base M5 MBP; I have deleted the error from the incorrect posting. Agreed many MBP users probably should buy up to Pro or Max chip levels; but not all. Some do not need stronger performance but certainly do appreciate the superior display and speakers of all MBPs. IMO it is a no-brainer to choose the MBP.

in which world do you live? what's next? incredible os? as long as there are buyers like you, nothing will change at apple
Why do you think Apple should change? We have been getting mostly superior products from Apple for decades now. What $T tech company is it that you think Apple should emulate?

Still, you now get Pro SoC speeds without having to spend Pro SoC money. My guess is the teardowns will show the M5 now has the same SSD configuration of the M4 Pro (so more SSD chips for the same capacity).

This “Pro” moniker starts to be irritating because it means everything and nothing at the same time.
This vanilla M Macbook Pro could very well have been simply Macbook or Macbook Premium to have some differentiator.

Serious question - why do people care what products Apple calls Pro, Ultra, Air, etc? I can’t think of anything more irrelevant. It is constant across the computers, phones, iPads, all products people talk about on the forum. Apple lays out the attributes of all of the products clearly. All of them work well. Buy what works best for you

People complained that iPhone and iOS releases didn't match, when the iPhone 16 came with iOS 18.

Then they complained that iOS 26 came out in 2025.

The Air doesn't even have more air in it than the other phones. They should rename it the iPhone Onesie for having one camera lens..

Pro or not, no Laptop or electronic device for that matter runs without power. So to cut the power adapter is like selling a car with no gas tank. It is just ridiculous. And for those who say it doesn't concern them, good for you. But Apple could probably sell you a laptop with no screen and you would buy it anyway because you already got a TV at home and an old cable to connect it. But yes, no one is forced to buy those products, it's just a shame what Apple has become. If you remember the Mac vs. PC adds they made fun of PCs because you had to buy things separately and with a Mac it "just worked". Good luck with that if you didn't buy a power brick separately with your new M5 MBP or iPhone.
All that they have done is to split the MBP into separate items for the computer and the power adaptor. You now have the option to purchase the computer with or without an adaptor depending on your needs. The computer price was lowered about the same amount as the cost of the adaptor.

this is not Apple not offering a power adaptor or forcing you to pay more for an adaptor. They just split the prices out. It also only applies to the EU market. No one is forcing you to buy a MBP with no power adaptor.

Agreed. They reduced the price of the M5 (compared to last year's M4) by €100 and you can add a charger for around €60.

What irritates me* is that they grey out the option of adding a charger unless you customise the order. You have to add the laptop, then search accessories to find a suitable charger, then add that.

* on behalf of other people; I paid an extra €100 to get the M4 last year 😁

There are a subset of people who have a certain idea about who "professionals" are, what a "professional" device should have for specifications, and how all "professionals" should use a device.

Every upgrade costs €250 instead of €230, though. I was checking ‘my’ model, 16 GB RAM and 1 TB storage, and the price confused me until I noticed that.

I’m team no charger. I don’t know what I even did with mine, possibly left it in the box and only took the cable, I have a 100W Anker charger with 3xUSB-C + USB-A. I wouldn’t have minded saving extra €80.

By that philosophy there isn't any need for Apple to name any of their _portable computer with integrated touch screen_ anything else than iComputer?

Of course there is a need to give consumer an indication what the specific model is without having to delve into the technical specifications. Having to referre to an MBP M4 Pro is Apple just being silly for the sake of marketing and misleading people that will not be able or just won't check the spec sheet. It isn't new though.

Omg enough of the complaining about RAM. Apple just upgraded the Air base to 16GB. Next year you’ll be complaining about how the base isn’t 32. People will buy what they need ffs.
I'm pretty sure I'll be complaining about how the base is still 16, because you know damn well that is what is going to be the case.

As is often the case, Gruber is irrational. Like I posted earlier, the MacBook Pro 14" has:
Much better display
Better speakers
More memory bandwidth
1.3x More battery capacity
3 Thunderbolt ports instead of 2
Supports 4 external displays instead of 2
Fans available if needed for high performance
HDMI port
SDXC slot
M5 chip instead of M4
[edit: corrected reference to TB5]

Hardly just wanting "Pro" in the name; Gruber's comment is moronic. Just the superior display quality alone justifies the MBP.

I gave up on that clown show over a decade ago- unsurprising that he’s still the same.

The base M4 MacBook Pro has Thunderbolt 4. You need to upgrade to the M4 Pro to get Thunderbolt 5. So there is no change here. It would have been nice for the base M5 to support Thunderbolt 5, a significant update, but it is apparently not to be.
My question is, when will the base Mx chip get TB5?
