I bought the M4 MacBook Pro a few weeks ago, knowing the M5 was due soon. The performance boost doesn’t really matter to me, and the M4 was $300 off at Costco.
I checked the reviews for the A19 Pro which forms the basis of the M5 and the CPU improvements over A18 Pro were marginal. The big improvements were on the GPU side and my workloads are primarily CPU-based. So I felt pretty safe going for an M4 Pro at a big discount ($532 off).

Gruber said it best:
As is often the case, Gruber is irrational. Like I posted earlier, the MacBook Pro 14" has:
Much better display
Better speakers
More memory bandwidth
1.3x More battery capacity
3 Thunderbolt ports instead of 2
Supports 4 external displays instead of 2
Fans available if needed for high performance
HDMI port
SDXC slot
M5 chip instead of M4
[edit: corrected reference to TB5]

Hardly just wanting "Pro" in the name; Gruber's comment is moronic. Just the superior display quality alone justifies the MBP.

With support for Macs not going past the 10 year mark, is it really worth using these for file storage vs just buying an external one?

I suppose for people who like everything on one Apple-supported drive. My preference for desktops would still be external even if it wasn't more econimical. For laptops, external drives are a bit kludgy. Though if I needed to travel with more than 1 TB, I'd probably still juggle an external drive rather than buy a 2 or 4TB internal drive.

Someone who cares enough about these things to pay extra for a Pro should really be getting an Mx Pro chip for a few hundred more. It's a small percent of the total when getting an MBP anyways. Also you're totally wrong about Thunderbolt 5. Thunderbolt 5 is only available in M4 Pro and M4 Max MacBook Pros

The increased SSD speeds are not as groundbreaking as they may seem.
MacBook Pro M43318.6 / 2899.5
MacBook Pro M33359.1 / 2956.3
(Write/Read)
From Tom's Guide
The M4 Pro has speeds around 6700W/5400R. So doubling the M4 results gets you...about the same speed as the existing M4 Pro MacBooks.

Not including a charger in the box on a “Pro” machine just smacks of cheapness. Or hubris. Maybe both.

Whenever I passed along an old laptop I always passed the charger that came with it. Why? Within a set period of time without a charger it becomes a brick. It’s a de facto necessary piece of equipment to make your over $1,000 (or Euro) purchase actually functional.

I guess I get some people don’t have a problem with it. But I would. The computer won’t run without an adapter. It’s not some sort of optional equipment.

This is Tim, at the absolute cheapest. Apple keeps this crap up and the they’ll lose customers. A lot of people will feel that way. It just smacks of cheapness.

A “Pro” laptop is a PREMIUM product. I shouldn’t have to pay à la carte for the things I need to make it work.
IMHO No product of any sort should come with a charger or a cable. They should always be offered as an option. This is a good move from Apple, and one I guarantee will be followed by Dell, Lenovo, Samsung, and all the PC copycats. The world is literally drowning in redundant chargers and leads. I find it hard to believe that any reader of this site does not have a drawer full of redundant crap. For myself, any MacBook charges when plugged into my Apple Studio Display so the supplied Pro charger is redundant. I have two Anker desktop chargers with 100w/150w which do the job at different locations, at least a couple standalone Apple ones from older MacBooks plus far too many 30/40w micro Ankers and Ugreens, plus lots of junk chargers from various suppliers of tech products. This is a typical MacRumors - I hate Tim Cook, I hate Apple storm in a teacup.

Nope, me is smart!
M1 is just overated, the log in is slower, Music is garbage i cant see the lightgrey type on Tahoe as a human should, the safari launch is slower, the unified memoery is off by 10GB just using the computer, the top manu is tanbsparent as that overlaps the program's menu thansk yo Liquor Glass and the laptop gets hot since Tims decied no tto place a fan inside these M1 MBA.
so not user error..

Maybe you should stay away from that Liquor Glass.

This is a base model with absolutely incredible specs for the price. Your wishlist is for 2026-2027 and far more money.

in which world do you live? what's next? incredible os? as long as there are buyers like you, nothing will change at apple

Here is what ChatGPT found for you:

Key Legislation & Rules

  1. WEEE Regulations (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2013, as amended)
    • These are the core laws covering e-waste in the UK.
    • They require “producers” (manufacturers, importers, re-branders, etc.) to register, report how much electrical/electronic equipment (EEE) they place on the market, fund the collection, treatment, recycling and disposal of e-waste.
    • Distributors/retailers also have obligations: offering free take-back for like-for-like products when selling new ones; accepting small WEEE from households under certain conditions.
  2. Producer Responsibility Regulations
    • Broadly, the UK has “producer responsibility” laws that cover packaging, batteries, end of life vehicles, and electronics (WEEE). The idea is the “polluter pays” / lifecycle responsibility model.
    • These push tech firms and electronics producers to design for reuse / recyclability, reduce hazardous substances, ensure proper treatment of waste, etc.
  3. Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS)
    • Limits certain toxic materials (e.g. lead, mercury, cadmium) in electronics, which helps reduce environmental harm when devices reach end-of-life.
  4. International Waste Shipments Regulations (Transboundary Waste)
    • Newer regulations (including 2024’s amendments) that make exporting/importing waste including e-waste more tightly controlled, to avoid dumping or mis-handling abroad.
And that does not say you can’t have a charger in the box ….. 🙄

What do you expect when they release a new model every single year?
I expected that after they got their own modem C1X, that is now in iPad, so they don't have to pay license fees to Qualcomm, they will offer it in MacBook Pro line as well. Also from teaser video I expected new color. That didn't happen as well.

MacBook Pro 14' 32GB, 1T, + 5G modem would be perfect traveling companion.

Pro or not, no Laptop or electronic device for that matter runs without power. So to cut the power adapter is like selling a car with no gas tank. It is just ridiculous. And for those who say it doesn't concern them, good for you. But Apple could probably sell you a laptop with no screen and you would buy it anyway because you already got a TV at home and an old cable to connect it. But yes, no one is forced to buy those products, it's just a shame what Apple has become. If you remember the Mac vs. PC adds they made fun of PCs because you had to buy things separately and with a Mac it "just worked". Good luck with that if you didn't buy a power brick separately with your new M5 MBP or iPhone.

Disappointed by the WiFi. I know I shouldn't be - the 250Mbps (Ookla Internet Speed Test) I get on this WiFi device (the corporate Dell), some distance from the suboptimally placed router, is overkill. Yet I also have a WiFi 7 device with the healthy goodness of MLO, and that approaches triple overkill from the same location :-/.
