It should be fine. It just specs 2666Mhz SODIMMs. Even if yours are 2400Mhz it should be fine, it will just run at the lower speeds and timings.
Will it bring all the ram down to the same speed and timings or will just those chip run at the lower speeds? I've been wary about mixing and matching different RAM chips in the past.

Nothing for the small iMac? It's like they're taking the 2-tier MacBook Pro lineup to the iMac...

What RDNA1?! 🤯🤬 Then what took them so long? I thought they gonna get RDNA2, there is no redesign and pretty much already outdated GPU as always, this should be done months ago 🤬

RDNA2 is 6-9 months away from shipping in volume. Too many people think AMD is ready to go. They aren’t. One GPU will be launched in September in regular and XT variants. Good luck finding AIO cards from the usual suspects until January. AMD is still learning to walk and chew gum at the same time.

EDIT: Comet Lake-S didn't ship months ago. It was announced May 27th, but didn’t start getting volume to larger clients until the last 30 days. Apple moves as fast as anyone to get new CPUs into shipping computers, versus Dell that lets you pre-order the day of announcement and then let’s you cool your heels for 45-60 days before you get your new computer.

I am with Nicole. I care more about what the iMac can do, versus what it looks like bezel wise. It isn’t a priceless work of art, or long lost pirate treasure to be fondled over. It is just a Mac that helps people get work and pleasure done in a fun and productive manner.

I 100% agree it is a tool.
Funny thing is though all my apps run better on a pc than a mac so I am not buying any intel Macs ever again. It is an overpriced tool for the performance you get.
If your usage is pure Apple apps that are optimised for Macos then great - the iMac is perfect for you.
If you are like me and use many pro apps [Architecture, product and visualising] then nope it is not a good buy.

No way am I leaving apple, but for my productivity over the next 2 years in my business will be done on Windows PC until I see how all the Apple silicone will pan out. I have no doubt whatsoever that Apple will nail it but it probably wont be for the apps I use as they have no control over them.

Love my macs. I also love being able to do my job fluently which I currently cant do. So I agree, it is a tool first and foremost.
But as a designer it is super important to me that my hardware looks great too. My PC box will hide away - but I still got a fully customised Matt black one :)

I like the current design, even after 8 years. IMHO, it is still the most beautiful AIO design there is.
I agree but it’s time. I currently have a 16in MBP connected to an ultrawide but I do miss my 2012 iMac. The design is amazing but I’m sure they are saving it for 2021 I don’t think releasing anything in 2020 is a good idea 😂

Valid points on the work flow. I can get all my work done in the Apple orchard (thankfully). If i had to use Windows, I would be in real trouble.

As to wanting your computer to look nice (as a designer) I get that side as well, even though I don’t share the need to pimp my pc. lol

I think Nicole brought up a good point. Many here are quick to dismiss actual upgrades, because the look of the Mac didn’t change. Are these people trying to be the popular kids on the block? Are they trying to impress Suzy on the tech playground? Who knows.

Being old school, I don’t fall in line with the change for the sake of change crowd around here.

Yeah it's a dated design. Yeah there's no Face ID. But what can I do? I'd love to have a Surface Studio, but the internals suck.

Apple updates the 27" first to get more sales before upgrading the 21". Probably see an update later before their Silicon iMacs come out...

Nope, today was prime time for Apple to update the 21.5” iMac (Back To School) and they didn’t do it. The 21.5” is done, stick a fork in it. Up next is the 23” Apple Silicon iMac at the AplSi launch later this year.

This might actually be the machine to buy if you want one of the last Intel Macs that can natively run x86 code. I'm going to be seriously mulling over this.

Yes, if you don't need 32 bit support or the ability to swap out the drives. I on the other hand, ordered the the i9 last month expecting that these changes were coming. This is a great option for those wanting (needing) x86 and/or Windows native support but don't need to run non subscription software like LightRoom or Photoshop (i.e: CS6) or can wait for 64bit support for their critical apps and peripherals. Also I saved a lot of money on storage as 2TB is (still) way more than it used to be, even though the base CPU is significantly better.

That is entirely on Panos and his over inflated opinion of himself and Microsoft’s actual hardware engineering abilities. That being said, I too would love an Apple Silicon version of the Surface Studio running Big Sur.

Really Come on apple. But we all know the redesign will be for the new Chips. 8 Years is too long for a redesign.

Why can’t it instead be a testament to a rather good design?

Notice too how much of what’s being “demanded” by some involves removing something and giving less, such as all this fervent heartburn over reducing bezels... Apple already knows they can trick us by ”improving” something by removing something (ports, jacks, serviceability and upgradability...). Just beware....there’s only so much Apple can take away in the name of “fresh design” until all that’s left is a bezel-less portless monitor on a stick...

Same embarrassingly dated design? Jikes, even my Dell desktop at work from 4 years ago has less bezel

Yes cuz I have to look at it all day thinking damn this thing looks like an old tube tv
Beats me, I mostly look at the beautiful screen when I'm working. I tend to make a lot of mistakes and miss stuff when I try to work on the bezels. Besides, I like old school 32bit computing, not all this fancy, expensive 64bit stuff.

But then it wouldn’t run any good software. Apple silicon could be fast but itd be little more than a chromebook at this point running crappy iPad like apps. Good luck getting dev support for it anytime soon as there’s hardly any money to be made on it for quite awhile. Especially when Apple locks it down to their App Store.

It’ll flop and apple will be back doing intel.

The update on the specs is great, and I would have ordered one if it was the right thing for me.
However, I did have an iMac Pro and the bezels did actually annoy me. It is and never was to me about what other people thing, but what I think. But the main reason for selling it was I needed to be mobile At that time.
As I always say, we each have our own preferences and great if the bezels are fine for your use - doesn’t bother me in the slightest what computers other people have.

But in terms of design, it is outdated without a doubt, no matter what arguments people put up. There is no ‘classic’ in technology as it is always developing and changing.

I cant wait to see the 2021 24” iMac though and will most likely get one for home together with a 14” MBP. I think Apple Silicone is going to be great.

Er no. As the apps currently on MacOS suck too in comparison to a PC. All the developers develop for Windows first and foremost.
I would much prefer Apple Silicone designed apps, rather than the rubbish I have to work.

There is no way will Apple go backwards. If things don’t pan out properly they can just put their hands into their pockets and pay for the software to be developed. I actually hope this is the case.

I do think the new releases next year will be a thing of beauty. And they may come with a high beauty price as well. I am not planning on indulging in any more new iMacs for a while.
