Yes and all those people who want to buy $1799 displays love to be compelled to stick with said computer for the 7 years the display lasts.
Those who want the ability to upgrade the computer separately from the monitor would be well-advised to avoid all-in-one form factors. You lose quite a bit of flexibility and upgradability, not only with the computer but with the display as well. It’s kind of a package deal.

True, but when you start pricing displays of this quality it turns out you're getting the computer part at a pretty decent price.

That said, I really do wish they made it possible to use the display as an external for a different Mac to extend its afterlife.

That was my point to OP above 🙂

Does it really matter if the bezels are 1 inch or 10 inches? It’s a desktop computer, it’s not like you’re gonna bring it with you in a backpack. On the contrary, large bezels in the iMac allows for more airflow. Because of this the iMac is almost always silent, in contrast to the new MBPs which can’t even drive an external screen without the fans going crazy.

"I just heard what a bezel is and I think it's bad because everyone on the internet says so!"

Nope, today was prime time for Apple to update the 21.5” iMac (Back To School) and they didn’t do it. The 21.5” is done, stick a fork in it. Up next is the 23” Apple Silicon iMac at the AplSi launch later this year.

Did not think about that, thanks for the insight...

But...there's a new marketing VP now as of today, so who knows...

though you are probably correct. :)

(Just saw that -- totally agree)
All in ones like iMac have their market, but I totally get why someone like OP would have no interest in that form factor. But just because I might prefer separate components doesn’t mean an iMac isn’t a valid choice for others.

It reminds me of the debate back in the day between buying a stereo receiver vs. separate amp and tuner 🤣

It took them 9 years to go all SSD since I got my first modern iMac in 2011. 256GB base storage is not bad considering one can get an external SSD. But the it’s not an all-in-ine anymore.

2 years ago I switched to a mac mini with an external monitor of my choice. Would probably never buy an iMac again.

Team: hi, Tim, we need a new design for the iMac, we have a lot of idea in our design lab...
Tim: no, I heard too many enclosures have been already manufactured in our warehouse.......

"I also see my processor moving clock speeds around and its because its being throttled" "It goes fast and then immediately slows down." "I don't know why Apple does these things?" "Fix the thermals Apple, like in the iMac Pro" lol. All personally enjoyed forum comments and responses.

Maxing out the 27" iMac (Nano, i9, 128GB, 8TB SSD, 5700XT) lands just south of $9,000.00 USD. This is your one and only warning that the iMac Pro is getting zero updates, buy it at your own risk.

Apple laid the groundwork for this to be either the final Intel iMac or the next to final update as they will be able to simply drop in a Rocket Lake-S CPU using the same 400-Series PCH that is in this model and leave everything else the same. Whether that happens depends on how well uptake of the AplSi goes over the next year. The inclusion of T2 surprises me, but that simply means that those of us without T2 will probably lose macOS updates sooner than those with T2, but I'm rumormongering without solid evidence.

Obviously, by the lack of any meaningful update to the 21.5" 4K iMac, this is the final version of that model. We will be treated to a 23" AplSi iMac in October for the holiday buying season or Apple will hold it until Q1/2021.

Solid upgrade, if uninspired. Anyone thinking Apple would redesign the iMac before the AplSi switch is picking and choosing their delusions.

As soon as the iMac Pro was announced, I was silently thinking in my head the same thing. The iMac Pro, much like the MacBook, is/was a product designed to bridge the gap when Intel couldn't release CPUs that Apple wanted: for the iMac Pro, it was workstation-class CPU and performance when Apple didn't quite have the Mac Pro (2019) ready, for the MacBook, it was a thin and light device meant for light tasks and high battery life.

I hope my logic makes sense. Like the post I quoted, I too think that the iMac Pro is going to be a "one-and-done" deal sort of thing, especially when Apple starts releasing ARM-based desktop devices.

Highly doubt the announcement of a new Marketing chief had anything to do with no updates to the 21.5-inch iMac. These announcements are planned months in advance.

The iMac Pro is dead same fate as 2013 Mac Pro unfortunately. Apple did the same thing, bump up the cpu for same price...

This new iMac is the last, since June 2022 is the time apple will no longer cell Intel Macs. Don't waste your money on this, wait for redesigned ARM iMac. Judging from performance of these chips apple will blow away the intel CPU. Remember the ARM chip in the iPhone/iPad is small, thus apple can increase its size for desktops for more power. WAIT it out if you can....as your Intel Macs will be hard to resell down the road....just my two cents.

There are no SSD options on the base model...weird...

I guess not, ultimately this is the end of the iMac as we currently know it, so Apple doesn't want to be supporting too many different configurations going forward when it probably won't be a device in production for that long.

More than reminiscent of a long-in-tooth decade-old outgoing car model that's released in one last "final edition" trim that they finally spec up with the options held back just to attract the blissfully ignorant (usually mom and pop types) that are unaware or don't care about its imminent obsolescence to make way for the prettier, shinier, all round more powerful and completely redesigned from the ground up new model. Mom & Pop (pushed really hard by the dealer) will convince themselves they have a bargain (which in some ways they do), but the buyer's remorse and depreciation will hit harder than a crash barrier.

Outrageous pricing for the whole lineup!

AU - https://www.apple.com/au/shop/buy-mac/imac

Only 8GB RAM for all models? Getting absolutely fleeced! 🤬

Not only does the old 21.5” old Full HD Base Model still exist, but it’s got a piddly 2.3GHz dual-core i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD and integrated graphics for US$1,099.00/AU$1,699.00!!! 💸💸💸

How they can justify this I don’t know! Minimum specs for a desktop should start with a quad-core i5, and for this price it should have the 4K display. $US699.00/AU$999.00 would be a good entry level price point for Apple in my country if they want to maintain that premium level feel with their pricing but that should still have a quad-core i5, probably 16GB RAM and arguably higher than 1080p res. They’re making it so hard to stay in the Mac ecosystem if they’re gunna charge this much! Scary to think what genuinely NEW Apple Silicon-based Macs will be priced at! 🙈
