We all know Cook likes to play things safe. But releasing a 5S with updated internals?

That takes the piss

I have no problem with my 6S plus in my back pocket . You would look like a fool trying to stick anything like a phone in your front pockets

Back pocket?! My phone is kept in my front pocket (not least because it means I can get to it while wearing a lab coat) but also because it is more convenient. I'll gladly take "looking like a fool" for that piece of 150% better functionality and convenience.

My front jeans pockets are also bigger than my back pockets, which I don't keep anything in since I prefer not sit on the things I keep in my pockets.

I like it! $100 less and I would buy one now. But will hold onto my 5s until the 7 comes up.

But I'm afraid the 7 will only come in the larger form factors...

Few more difference between 6s & SE:

- Touch ID - SE got first generation
- FaceTime Camera - SE got 1.2mp & f/2.4 aperture (6s > 5mp & f/2.2)
- Sensors - no barometer

Noticeable differences between the 6S Plus and SE according to Apple's comparison page:

  • No Dual-domain pixels for wide viewing angles for SE.
  • No LTE Advanced in SE.
  • No Display Zoom and Reachability for SE.
  • No MIMO w/ Wifi in the SE.
  • No second generation Touch ID speeds for the SE.
  • No Optical Image Stabilization in the SE Camera.
  • No OIS for Video.
  • No 5 MP front facing camera. Only 1.2 for the SE.
  • Auto HDR only for photos for front facing camera of SE.
  • No Barometer in SE.
PS I won't really compare the screen size or battery. I know the SE has a 640p display, which is pitiful for a 2016 phone at that size to me. Idk about the PPI being high at that screen size. I just would want at least a 720p display for a 4" screen if I were interesting the SE.

Currently I own a 5S and Mini2 cellular.
Frankly I've never been happy with the design of the 6 with the curves. Perhaps they will continue with the straight edge design of SE.

Out of all the features missing I wish it would have the stabilization in camera and MAYBE barometer (I'm thinking ahead of myself) if I could find cool use for that.

Well, I can't afford a new phone now but I'm happy this thing is out there. I carry both devices daily.
My old workplace provided me with few designs of the 9.7" and I was thrilled with iPad Mini1 came out.

The only area I wished my phone was larger when using it for GPS when in the car.

Bravo apple.

1. Take $199 iPhone 5S.
2. Upgrade internal specs slightly
3. Add a new color
4. Charge $399

iPhone SE costs 399$ in US and 489€ in Europe. iPad air 2 now also costs 399$ in US, but 439€ in Europe. Where is the logic on this pricing? Why does the iPhone cost 50€ more than the iPad with same base price in US?

The US price does not include sales tax, so depending on where you buy it in the US it could be more expensive. The Euro prices include VAT from the outset.

"but the 6/6+/6S/6S+ sort of built upon that" - can you explain? I don't see any similarities between those designs :O
Oops sorry. Should've elaborated.

I was just referring to the metal back panel. I was pretty annoyed with the 3G debuted with plastic (that ended up cracking)

I'll only buy it if it has 2GB of RAM.

1GB and I'll stick with my iPhone 5, as it's fine for my needs, but I'm sick of apps/browser tabs reloading.

I never have this problem with my 5s. Don't see 1GB being a deal breaker in terms of actual use most most.

So, no 3D Touch. So despite having the same processor etc as the bigger phones, it's still an inferior model. Thanks Apple. Confirmation, basically, that they're not going to tweet the 4 inch model as well as the bigger ones, a big **ck you to all those people they say love that screen size.

So the outer design of the se is same as 5S? A 3 year old design? They will keep this for 2 yrs atleast so it will be a five yr old design

Why didnt they just use the ipod touch design and thicken it up

Keeping the same design was genius for many reasons.

They said they sold 30 Million 5S last year. Plus the other years of the 5 and 5s.

This means they are supporting all those companies that have designed accessories for that phone. It also means that consumers buying it will have a massive amount of choice when it comes to cases and other accessories. No waiting for months to get a quality case. Which happens every time Apple changes the design.

Exactly! Design is surely a matter of taste, but the iPhone 5 design is timeless, in my opinion. Therefore, it's not "backwards" just because it was introduced a few years ago.

Agreed. If people liked it and it sold well. They why change a good thing.

Did anyone catch whether this uses the newer TouchID sensor? I had lots of issues with the old one; the sensor in my 6s is much better.

No.

The 5S was not $199 contract-free. AT&T has it for 449.99 right now.

The SE is cheaper. We don't have contracts anymore.

Dang, if it only had 3D Touch. Anyone around here could tell me if that missing feature is a potential deal breaker or not so much? Cuz I kinda prefer a smaller iPhone than a phablet version.

4k is for editing for now (maybe even long-term). The reason is that outside a few high-end home theatre setups, 4K is simply not necessary from the viewing point of view. You've got to get over 60" display size and be relatively close for 4K to make much of a difference. The main reason to buy a 4K display right now is for non-resolution related advantages.

Then there is the content problem. Hardly anything is 4K, and unless the telco monopolies are broken, we'll not have good enough internet to really stream 4K anyway (heck, we can't even stream good 1080p yet... not even CLOSE).

I'm sure it will happen one day. *Maybe* we'll move to over-60" being typical for displays, but as homes get smaller, I'm kind of wondering about that one. And, as more consumers buy 4K, I suppose there will be pressure to make everything 4K, just because. But, Apple probably isn't going to be an early adopter of that kind of move. They usually don't do the 'just because' type fads (or, at least they traditionally haven't).

Yeah, 4K on a 40-50" TV doesn't make much sense, offering little to no visual benefit at typical viewing distances. Now, a 70"+ 4K TV on the other hand...!!!

Can you confirm whether the FaceTime camera is 5MP or 1.2MP? I seem to recall the keynote saying 5MP, which was echoed by the MacRumors article, but the Apple site seems to say 1.2MP.
Screen Shot 2016-03-21 at 20.05.00.png

If it had a 5 MP FaceTime camera, one would have thought it mentioned on this slide.

No 128GB.

Same giant bezels.

Wish Apple would give us a flagship 4" iPhone. Hanging onto my iPhone 5 for another year. :(

This keynote...protruding camera on the iPad? Ridiculous. Starting with 15 minutes of research and health was worthy, but incredibly boring. Only Phil Schiller exuded any appreciable enthusiasm. The Apple Watch is obviously selling badly; no sales figures and a 20% price drop. The iPad has been increased in price by 20%; just what is needed in the face of 8 quarters of plummeting sales. Shares are down post-keynote.

I find the death of Apple painful to watch. All good things come to an end, I guess. I'm grateful to Steve Jobs and all who worked with him for his amazing products.

lol — excellent piece of satire there, my friend.

This size will be my next iPhone when my contract is up in September. I will then move to a monthly bill and get ride of this contract.
