For some reason my hourly backups when my lid is closed is not working. I do have Power Nap on and my rMBP is connected to a power outlet as required. What gives? (First time Time Capsule/Time Machine user)

Mine just shipped from China and won't be here till next Wednesday. As soon as I receive it I'll be running some tests compared to my 4th gen Time Capsule. Really curious if the range has improved. That really is my only (minor) complaint about an otherwise fantastic router.

My 2nd Gen 1TB Time Capsule has been purring like a kitten for nearly 4 years. It's been the best router I've ever owned, and I've been through plenty. I'm jumping on the new one as soon as I get back from vacation!

I agree. Apple AirPort devices are pretty rock solid.

Of course it's false. Those devices don't have 802.11ac.

We can probably assume that most if not all of Apple's future devices with wi-fi from this point will support 802.11 ac, right? I am guessing the next iPhone will have it.

I would say we can assume that all of the future computers will have it. Probably iPhone/iPad but it will depend on the power costs to run it. It might be a big battery drain that isn't ready for mobile devices yet.

I would say notebook/desktop moving forward would have it. Mobile devices like iPad/iPhone is up in the air depending on cost and power efficiencies.

With all that extra space it's too bad they didn't think to put a few more gigabit ports on the back, I would pick one up if they had.

In comparison to what they're selling against, at about the same price, they have 1 less port. Most of the 11AC routers out there have 5 ports, 4 LAN + 1 WAN.

Unfortunately, the we that is people that would like more ports, are going to be a very small minority of users. I'd love to see an 8-port switch + WAN, but I realize that I'm in that small minority of power users.

Cheers,

I didn't want to post this until I acted on it, but has anyone noticed that refurb 2TB TC's are going for $200? Mine's on the UPS truck and on it's way. $200? That's $20 more than I paid for an Airport Extreme less than a year ago.

For the extra $100 I was tempted to get the extra performance of the new version, but it's too big to fit in the space I want to put it.

Another terrible design by Johnny pffffff.

Why would you want these things on your desk???

I want them out of sight on the wall or something.

How hard can it bloody be.

From what I have heard via the interwebs the range for 2.4Ghz stays about the same but the big winner is 5Ghz which is pretty important for those of us in busy neighbourhoods and are running out of channels that aren't interfering with the neighbours. For me I keep the Airport Extreme Base Station on top of my book shelf which gives the best coverage and it is out of sight.

Perfect. 5Ghz range is what I need. Got a link to any results?

It was still impossible to upgrade from draft-n to n without buying new Apple hardware.
Perhaps, you remember about Apple Extreme 802.11n Enabler, which allowed to enable draft n
on some computers, which were just a/b/g initially: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2447

Yes, I remember the 802.11n Enabler very well. The enabler was a software update, no new hardware necessary. The official story as to why it was not released for free (you either had to pay for it, or get it bundled with an Airport or the next OS X) was "accounting reasons/Sarbanes-Oxley".

Not quite sure why you're bringing that one up, though, the 802.11n enabled had nothing to do with "draft-n to n".

It is a way of separating the 802.11 AC antennae ;)

You think Jobs would give a ***** about that. He would just have the engineers design around it. He revived Apple with the iMac (remember?), which in their time were nothing short of art, and functional at the same time as well.

For those of you wishing for a USB 3 port

Why in the WORLD would there be a USB 3 port when the "Over the Air" AC data transfer speed is not even at USB 2 speeds???????????

Yikes!

Because some of us still have wired gigabit ethernet!

And it could theoretically help. Possibly.
Geez!

And if it's such a ridiculous idea then why are there numerous examples of NAS devices out there that DO have a USB 3 port? Hmm? Or does the RDF make that argument invalid?

Whenever I access the TC HDD from Finder, my TC makes a sound for a second. That's just the HDD waking up to access right?

Mine does the same thing and that is exactly what I think it is. If you put your hand on the top as this happens you can feel a slight vibration also. It sounds and feels like a HDD spinning up from sleep.

I had the prior version on my desk and I do not remember it being this loud. Does it seem loud to you? My MACMINI is also on my desk and it is extremely quite.

When it is just sitting there, it is not loud, but yes that "berrrtt..." wake from sleep HDD noise is new and I never heard it on the last TC version.

I was thinking of buying this to replace my ATT Uverse stock two year old modem/router combo. I have been pretty unhappy with the wireless strength, and have been mulling the idea of adding the airport extreme, or just another access point. Thoughts?

I got in my new 2013 Time Capsule, and compared to my previous-gen Time Capsule I notice no speed difference on local file transfers between my 2012 iMac and my 2012 Mac mini on 5Ghz N.

Will have to do some more testing. It's quite hilariously smaller in footprint compared to the last-gen. It's almost... cute. :p

Another access point will probably be best.

Haha alright good! Don't remember hearing that sound for at least a good 5 years so I was puzzled!
