How come it says the new Macbook will be available in November?

That will give them some time to add a FireWire option to the MacBook that many on the forum (me included) are clamoring for.:p
BTW, for those who don't know or forgot, with FireWire you can use you MB/MBP/iBook/PowerBook as an external hard drive. It's a great way to transfer data from one machine to another. That's why I want FW back. I'd settle for eSATA, but I'd rather have FireWire.

I did want the firewire as I have a triple interface Ext HDD but USB will be perfectly fine. I'll probably just end up buying an AEBS and doing wireless backing up on both the iMac and new MB when I buy it.

So I'm very happy about today's update. I was going to buy a 320GB HDD but I don't have to because the higher end MB comes with 250GB and that is more than enough. I will wait until DDR3 is cheaper then buy 4 GB RAM. Plus, the backlight keyboard is a nice touch. I'll be buying the higher end MB at ed pricing assuming it will be $1449. For those of you that think it is too expensive, be happy because the old MB is now $100 cheaper and has the F400. Students be even happier because it's $949 for you! That's cheap.

apple eliminated FW from the MB because consumers (well the ones who even know what FW is) see it as a Pro connection. Most people know usb because thats what they use almost all the time to connect to their devices. Apple is trying to push those who want or need FW to the MBP.

That doesn't make any sense.

If that was indeed Apple's strategy, why didn't they just leave the FW alone? Why would they push FW users away just to gain USB users? Why not just have both and please everybody? It may not be useful to some consumers for reasons of ignorance, but there are the few out there who use it.

I'm still deciding on buying one for the price however.

Anyone else notice that the Macbook 2.0ghz says it has a backlit keyboard, but the Macbook page says it doesn't and only the 2.4 does ???

QUESTION:

I have an external FIREWIRE 400 hard drive that I've used for my last, oh, three computer transitions. If I were to obtain a new MacBook....how would that even work?

How would I get my data off the external and onto the MacBook? I can't put all the data on my external on my iMac and then buy a new USB powered external, because there's just too much.

Any suggestions?

Store seems to be back up and both MacBook store pages has this configurable option:

Keyboard and Documentation
* Backlit Keyboard (English) / User's Guide
* Backlit Keyboard (Western Spanish) / User's Guide

But the detailed specs page says:
Full-size keyboard (illuminated keyboard standard on $1,599.00 model)

seems like the new macbook does not come with a remote. i dont' see a remote sensor on the machine either. how are you suppose to use front row without one

Interesting note about the keyboard

Maybe it has been mentioned earlier, but there's no way to really read all that in time..

They've become pretty cheap on some things. The 2.0 GHz CPU is a let down, also

I can't access the store, but I'm assuming the "new" (ha!) $999 MB doesn't have firewire either?

No F/W is a deal breaker for me too, I own too many peripherals that use it. If anything, I love my G3 iBook even more this afternoon than I did before, with it's portable 12" matte screen, 4 hour battery life and Firewire port.

Realistically I know it's coming towards the end of it's life, so it's off to the Apple Refurb store I go or wait and see what the Rev. B's bring to the table.

Prices

Prices for the new macbooks and new macbook pros are way too high. Honestly, there does not appear to be too many new features. This is the second consecutive Apple event in which they failed miserably. Unfortunately, I have become a slave to Apple, and I will therefore most likely buy one anyway, but I am really not happy at all.

Guys I'm not happy about the lack of FireWire either, but let's face it: hardly anyone in the great scheme of things will care. Most people don't even know what FireWire is, but they know USB, and USB is "good enough". Yeah, I know about DV transfer. I heard rumours of an Ethernet -> FW adapter, maybe that'll be the solution, and a USB -> Firewire adapter, though ugly, can't be technically impossible. There'll be a way around it.

Otherwise, lovin' it all. Awesome upgrade. The price hike is presumably (hopefully) there because all this environmental friendliness is more expensive and they couldn't absorb all the cost. We will all have to dip into our pockets a bit more to save the world! If Apple is just being greedy though, yeah, **** 'em, but something tells me they'd like to keep the price as low as they can. They want to sell a lot of these, remember.

Jebus, what are you smoking ? Awesome upgrade ? Work arounds ? Price hikes ? Save the world ? Missing features ? Price as low as they can ? Unbelievable.

Help!!

I waited patiently for 6 months for THIS??? This will be my first Mac and first laptop.

I am on a tight budget and I don't use gaming or video. I don't like the new look at all. I was hoping for all alum -even the keys.

I like the backlit keyboard and trackpad, but I don't think it's worth it to upgrade just for those. 1/2 lb lighter and 1/16 of an inch thinner isn't really gonna sway me either.

I think I am gonna buy the old style white macbook with the highest specs 2.4 Ghz/2GB/250GB and save myself $400 bucks!!

Do you guys see a reason for me to upgrade to the new?? Someone suggested a refurb- but I am a little hesitant on that??

Your thoughts...

Nope! Go for it! I got a blk refurb back in feb 08 and I swear it was brand new and got it for $1,049. After todays update, Im glad I got it as I'll stick with that. ;)

so yeah firewire - what gives ? my choices are either refurb old design mb for £20 more or MBP at a stupid price !

mmm does a dell have firewire? or express card Scrub that the Dell's are equal if not more in price in the UK for same ish spec

bugger i'm all confused - need new laptop soon

I like the new look, the aluminum finish, and the improved processing and battery life (not to mention the graphics card addition)...I think a few more design changes could have been considered...like moving the speakers somewhere else.

It is a decent update but could have been a lot better. I just think the removal of firewire isn't as huge a deal as other people believe it is. Which is fine I mean we all have our own methods of file transfer and I think firewire is eventually going to phase away for newer USB technologies instead.

The proprietary port for a cinema display is incredibly lame. Even though adapters exist. I think they should have put something else if they remove the firewire port, but obviously "less is more" as usual.

One thing to note

the $999 MacBook comes with a SuperDrive. So it's more of a drop than $100.

arn

I bought one :D:D:D

2Ghz, 4GB RAM, 250GB HDD and I added the airplane, DVI connectors :D

Can't wait

That doesn't make any sense.

How does that not make sense. Average consumer, doesnt know FW, why bother putting it there to please the few when the many wont care. Its not trying to gain usb users (i wasnt aware that was a classification of person). Its simply getting rid of a component your average consumer doesnt care about. For anyone that cares enough to actually need FW , the Pro is for you. That means more money for apple.

What part doesnt make sense? Oh you werent talking business sense?;)
