S-ata

I wonder why those new books have no S-ATA connector. It's cheap and faster than FireWire 800.

Firewireeeeeeeeee!

I love this Macbook, its looks, its specs.. everything but the keyboard but that's something I'd have to get over and would.

Once the typical whining about a product update dies down, everyone will realize this is an awesome laptop.

Don't you need a firewire? If not your good to go!

It cost Apple 10 cent per Macbook to include Firewire. Those 10 cents are gonna cost them dearly. I'm head of ASB at my Technical College and we currently use Macs. Today Apple probably lost a couple $100,000 just from us alone.

I hope everyone is contacting Apple and telling them WHY they are losing sales...

Else firewire is dropped from the iMacs come January.

Standard definition. That explains it. you do realize the US is going HD in January don't you?

That's fine for broadcasters who were forced by equipment manufacturers bribing congress to upgrade to HD, but theres plenty of normal people who will still be using sd because they don't want to spend money for an HD set.

We're going into a depression, we'll see how many people find the need to change to HD.

First, they're not going HD, they're going digital. If you don't know the difference then you shouldn't be discussing this with me anyway. Second, how many high school, or even colleges, are equipped with HD tv's? Or will be in the near future? I run a sdeline video business producing 1000's of standard definition DVD's every year. I have yet to have one of my clients request HD. It's coming, but much slower than many think. Even the schools that have purchased HD cameras are still producing in SD. And we are talking about thousands of high schools, and many thousands of students that are potentially affected by this. You can bury your head in the sand and pretend like that because firewire doesn't affect you it doesn't matter. For a large number of people, it does.

What has that got to do with the price of eggs?

SD, HD, video editing is still video editing. THe audio editing I do for work is normally 16bit 44.1K, but that doesn't mean I don't know how to edit 24bit 96K.

Part of the success of FCP has been it's adoption by educational institutes over the last few years it was more affordable than Avid, better than Premiere, and alot of those students who learned it back in the day are now using it at a professional level, if Apple make there Pro apps harder to reach then people will go elsewhere, and the creative and educational markets have served them well for many years.

You're obviously not the head of business studies.

It's called product differentiation. If you include all the same features in your cheap product as you do in your expensive product, what incentive is there to buy the expensive one?

Apple bumped the feature set for the new MBs dramatically - the high end MB is much closer to the MBP than it has ever been. In order to do that and not cannibalize their high-end line they have to remove features - it's that simple.

Vista? Please. You're all talk, but you'll be buying MBPs, especially with Apple's discount. I'm willing to bet on it.

Then buy the old whitebook.

Is there a problem with that too ?

Well I'm thoroughly unimpressed with the new design of the laptops. There really isn't much now to physically distinguish the MacBooks from the MBP's. Also I just hate this new color scheme that Apple is going with... This whole black and silver and GLOSS thing just seems terribly neo/retro-tacky. This is just my opinion. I'm now not regretting getting my Black MacBook this summer. Sorry to those who waited and didn't want such an extreme design change...

I kind of like the new Macbook. A little bummed about the firewire thing, but other than that. I would still want to see it a lot before spending $1300 on a laptop...

EDIT: This is probably completely stupid and false, but wouldn't it be wild if the new glass screen (it is glass, right?) was wired for multi-touch and only needed a system update to activate it. That would be sweet. I doubt it though....

this hasn't been mentioned as far as i have read. the functionality of the depressable trackpad is questionable to me. what if you want to highlight lots of text or click and drag where you have to reset your finger on the trackpad to cover the length of the screen?

As soon as people get their hands on these machines to review them, that's the kind of stuff we'll be finding out. And that's a good reason not to buy one the day they come out.

Why are they keeping the old whitebook alongside with the new design?

Not a bad deal for them if they can keep selling some of their old stock at only $100 off.

Yeah but the firewire port is multi use, camcorders, HDS, audio interfaces etc, and s-ata is used more by pros right, which they want to force into buying their mbp.

Now, I was about to buy a new Macbook, hoping for a >$1000 model, but BOOM! these new 'cheaper' ones came out. LOL, look at this, the entry-level macbook is $1400CAD + around $100tax = $1500 for a low-end one !The previous low-end was $1200, now that's a $300 increase.
The way I look at it, is when company introduces something new(like laptops) it usually makes it cheaper or at the same price point with more sets of features, but not more expensive. It does not seem to be the case here.

LOL ,apple is really hoping to boost their market share, I'm not opening my wallet any time soon, sorry. BIG disappointment price-wise, let alone other unimprovements.

I ordered from the online Apple store and once more.

The NEW aluminum Macbooks come with the backlit keyboard standard. Both the 2.0 and the 2.4

Fraid not fella - typo - you might try ringing Apple and asking for a good will gesture off your 2.4 instead - good luck - but otherwise you ain't gettig backlit keyboard!

Thats exactly what I've been wondering...i believe apple has to honor its (posted) word legally right?

Im sure they are covered in the t's and c's with an E&OE (Errors and Omissions Excluded)

You may get a good will something out of them - but I can't see them giving you a 2.4 for the price of a 2.0 - and thats the only way you'll get backlit keys

one word....FAIL

I'm applaud that Apple raised its prices for products that don't give you much in return. So what if it is aluminum? I don't understand the price hike on basically the same machine. AND AND AND it has no firewire.

Sorry apple, you aren't going to get any business from me. I'll be sticking to my pbg4 until further notice.

Backlit Keyboard

The 2.0ghz DOES come with the backlighting.

I confirmed it with the reps over at 1-800-MY-APPLE.

Nice math. Where in your calculation is tax for the 'old' model?...

What I don't see a lot of people addressing is the cost to Apple for this new processing technique, or the worth of having a device that is more structurally sound.

...was thinking about the profit margin dip that is expected by Apple...

....is it forecast for Q1 or Q2 2009 ?, just a thought because maybe they will be dramatically reducing prices after Christmas at Macworld 09 , if that happened it would only affect Q2 right ?

maybe they have hiked the prices up to cover the costly 'first run' of new machines via this new manufacturing process they have .

thoughts ?
