Do you gentlemen not think that by removing FireWire from the MacBook Apple is setting up for the future and someday FireWires, Optical Drives, etc. would become as obsolete as the word: "Thou" in the English language?

Can anyone tell me how is it possible they sell 2.1 for 999 and 2.0 to 1299 .. I know there is more differences but processor is really important thing and lately almost every laptop coming with 2.0 or up but in a half price..
1066MHz FSB, DDR3, twice the memory, aluminum construction, etc...

$999 Macbook has Firewire, $100 cheaper than yesterday and comes with a DVD writer. If you were recommending Macs yesterday, you should do so even with more conviction now.

In the long run, that is another story, but at the moment Macbook is still viable.

Yes, but for how long? I don't think apple is keeping that model as a permanent choice but rather just to clear out old inventory.

UGH, add me to the list of people being bummed about the no Firewire on the new MBs. I fool around with experimental audio/video, my DV camera and my audio interfaces are Firewire. I can't afford the price point of the MBPs right now. Guess I'll just have to stick with my lowly iBook G4 that HAS A FIREWIRE PORT...

Ditto that. My iBook, although decrepit, has a lovely 12" matte screen w/ a superdrive and a firewire port.

It's old, but it's a trooper. If it decides to crap out on me (God forbid) then I'll go the refurb route. Until then, I wait....

Other than the FireWire problem, do you ladies and gentlemen consider the new Aluminium MacBook to be the "true 12" PowerBook G4 replacement"?

That's just it. For someone like me that uses firewire daily, it's not a replacement for my 12" PowerBook (which is still used for editing on a regular basis. It's just sooo slow!).

I think the name of the new MacBook shouls be PoserBook! :p

Memphis is the US hub for Federal Express. I once spent an unfortunate night at a motel at the end of the Memphis airport runway. There's nothing like the sound of jets taking off directly at you all night long - it has a profound effect on one's nerves.

better graphics are a must and apple has delivered on the macbook

but like most here, why is there no firewire, unless that standard is going to disappear from the marketplace

Firewire 400 interface for camcorders is not old tech. It's the defacto standard.

When FW 800 is concerned, FW 400 is old. Just because the industry has chosen to stick with the older tech and not update doesnt mean apple has to.

I differ in opinion. If firewire is necessary then perhaps you are right. However, with the Nvidia graphics update, any type of editing and basic computer usage will flow much better which is actually a great step forward.
Agreed. And that's why they blew it so badly by eliminating the firewire.`

Many PC's still include PS/2, serial, parallel, telephone modem jacks etc., It's 2008 for God's sake- move on! Technology progresses and by including these old legacy connections you only encourage people to use their outdated equipment.
Dropping PS/2 or floppy drive for a newer better technology is understandable, even though it is bound to be too early for some people whenever you drop them. However, in this case, Apple is not replacing Firewire with something better.

Anyways, I am glad there is still the white Macbook option for those who need that.

Awesome! I live in Western North Carolina... so maybe I'll have it by Friday if it ships today... but still no shipment notification :(

That "someday" for firewire is not even close to being here so it wasn't a very good choice. You don't eliminate something that is in wide use currently. Especially when you're a company like Apple and you built your company around producers of creative content.

Early-adopters will be looking foolish

People are hung up on this $1,299 for 2.0GHz thing, but everyone knows that a mid-term adjustment will take place. Color aluminum housings will come along, and the $1299 will tumble to $1,000. The ones looking stupid will be those 'gotta-have-it-now' early adopters. :D

It can be if it had FireWire and can still can be without FireWire in the future (when maybe Firewire becomes as obsolete as the floppy disks themselves).

I don't live in the future. I live today and I use firewire today.

But hey do you think the prices will go down soon???
or is it worth the buy now??
and will they have rev A problems?

Thx for your help

I just ordered mine :D I have never used firewire in my life so no big issue for me, but maybe that's why they took it out of the macbook because students , like me ,don't really use firewire. I am replacing my 12' slow powerbook which I paid $1,499 back in 2003 so I don't see why people are bugging on the price point, the clash of design and new FSB speed helping out the 2GHz is good for me. I will not regret the glossy screen either LCD shines through well. And I called to make sure the Backlit keyboard is included with the $1,249.00 ( small student discount ) I got. That's one of the big issues i had between buying the $999 one and the new one, but it was not the ONLY deciding factor. Having a future in graphic design the graphics chip upgrade was nice too. And of course the new design won me over more... can't wait to get it!

I totally agree. Firewire is still going strong!

And if they were truly preparing for future interfaces, they would've replaced it with an e-SATA at the very least (a feature that I've had on my Windows PC for a couple of years).

The early adopters always pay more with fewer options, but they revel in the wow factor of having something on the bleeding edge. I lucked out when I got the iBook 300 only months after its announcement in 1999. It still works and I don't regret buying it. It took some time before the DVD option came to that model. It was not that powerful compared to the Powerbook 400 of that same period, but the iBook was the first wireless Mac and first with a Universal Motherboard Architecture which has since followed in all Mac portables for years after that model.

Using firewire 800 on a camcorder would make no sense. It would be like putting a V8 on a bicycle.

And wise companies produce products that meet the users needs. But you're right, they don't have to. But I don't have to buy their products any longer nor recommend them to anyone else.
