When your students graduate, they will be editing on real Pro machines at their jobs, as I cannot imagine anybody making professional editing on 13'' screens. If they will edit as just a hobby in the future, AVCHD might become more popular than HDV anyways. There seems to be already more AVCHD cameras than HDV ones in the market. What future are you worried about? At the moment, there is a low cost Macbook with firewire. No problems for this semester and probably for the next...

Of course, if all you want to do is rant that there is a low cost option with FW and high cost options with FW, but not a middle one, feel free to do so. I just would expect a more level headed advice from a teacher.

I edited professionally for a year on my 12" PowerBook and made thousands of dollars of supplemental income from it before I switched to something else. But they're not using it to make money. They're using it to develop their skills and prepare for a career later. The small size of the MacBook makes it convenient for them to take back and forth.

What is not level-headed about my advice, unless you're such a Mac zealot that you don't believe therre are any legitimate options besides Apple? Until now I've always recommended the MB because they could buy it with FCE pre-installed. But I am a computer agnostic. I use both and like both. So, unless Apple corrects this mistake, I will be recommending PC laptops in the future. It ultimately doesn't matter to me because I don't get a commission on either. But I think

Like it but can't afford it.

The price drop on the OLD white MacBook isn't bad. It's $100 cheaper AND comes with a super drive.

However, I don't want the old MacBook, I want a new one! At $1299, I'd have to save up quite a bit to get one. *sigh*

Compared to the previous midrange, it seems that's a pretty good deal, though. You get everyone you used to get except for lower CPU speed that's made up by using the new graphics chipset. I think they used the lower speed on purpose to reduce heat. I can't wait to get one... but I'll wait for TWO things. 1. Snow Leopard and 2. Revision B or user proven bug free and trouble free hardware.

I just ordered mine :D I have never used firewire in my life so no big issue for me, but maybe that's why they took it out of the macbook because students , like me ,don't really use firewire

lol, so what reason did they have for taking off half of the student discount then?

FireWire 400 vs. USB 2.0 Hard Drive Performance Comparison

Read and write tests to the same IDE hard drive connected using FireWire 400 and then Hi-Speed USB 2.0 show:

Read Test:

* 5000 files (300 MB total) FireWire was 33% faster than USB 2.0
* 160 files (650MB total) FireWire was 70% faster than USB 2.0

Write Test:

* 5000 files (300 MB total) FireWire was 16% faster than USB 2.0
* 160 files (650MB total) FireWire was 48% faster than USB 2.0

I was curious and just did my own quick test as I have two external firewire drives connected to my original/Rev A. MacBook 2.0. One of the drives also has USB 2.0. It is an older drive, about 2 years old but still a good reference. So I ran a couple of tests on that drive switching back and forth between USB and Firewire.

First was a copy test. A 3.8gb folder with about a dozen files. It is a VMWare instance of Ubuntu 8.04 for those who care.

The drive using USB 2.0 took on average 6 minutes and 15 seconds to duplicate. Using Firewire 400 it took on average 4 minutes and 20 seconds to duplicate.

The other test I just did a XBench benchmark on the drive. On USB it averaged 28.81, on Firewire 400 it averaged 37.36.

Off-topic:
She's great looking, but then you find out she doesn't drive and doesn't own a firewire port (er, I meant car).
What's so wrong with that?
I'd always take looks over driving ability. :D

But seriously, is that such a great social stigma with you Americans?

dont know, dont care, srry

All I was saying is the only people apple "screwed" by not including FW in the MB is hobbyists. No real professional is going to do video or audio on a 13" macbook.

And how would you know this, I do plenty of audio editing on my current 13.3" MB, and it suits me fine, much better than a MBP would.

I may be a hobbyist with music, but audio is what I get paid for

I hate to say it: Disappointed.

I've been waiting for months for this announcement, and I was quite literally ready to order just as soon as the online store was restored to active/orderable status. I have dearly loved my first generation MacBook that was purchased by my company so that I could soil it with Windoze XP so that I could communicate with the oh-so-microsoft centric world in which I live everyday. My MacBook is the only one in the company, envied by most and despised by IT. :D

I was waiting for this generation as I wanted to join the ultra-chic-elite with their PowerBook/Pro aluminum casings -- now I'm completely disgusted with the fact that I can't FW400-connect my would-be new aluminum MacBook to my 2 month-old Mac Pro and feed it all of my apps and data.

I phoned Apple tonight after a medicinal martini and asked the pleasant voice "so, DUDE! I want to use migration assistant and transfer everything from my Mac Pro to my new MacBook, how do I do it?" After a few minutes on hold waiting for them to finish their conversation with the "higher authority", I was told that I could purchase a third-party "USB to Firewire" converter cable. She started to Google this, and I thought I'd join in on the fun, but alas-- neither of us found such an animal.

She said that I was the second person to call with this question today. She also said that she hadn't sold too many new MacBooks.

I'm thinking I might have to do something disgustingly untrendy and order last minute's model. It might not be metal and save the lives of fluffy white baby seals, but at least the processor is faster, the RAM is larger, and it has FW400..... How five minutes ago.

Thats right, stick it to apple.

I'm not sticking it to Apple, nor would I want to. I work with Apple computers (and PC's too) everyday several hours a day for a living. But when they make products that can't be used in the way that I or my students need to use them, what would you suggest that I do? You can't wish the video into the computer, unless that was included in the specs, in which case I didn't see it! :)

On the other hand, the new MB will be a hit here. Price is not too bad and its new array of features, including its cool design, should help it sell well.

I'm really not sure that the new MB is going to fly in NZ. The 2.4GHz model has gone up NZ$500, which as a percentage is more than the increase for the MBP.

The old 2.1GHz white Macbook has also gone up in price since yesterday, despite absolutely no change in spec.

The new 2.0GHz model is $200 more expensive than yesterday's white 2.4GHz model.

I realise that the exchange rate is not what it used to be, but they should take it on the chin for a couple of months until things pick up again.

And just to rub salt in the wound, we are now paying about NZ$100 more for a MBP than they are in Australia.

Thats your problem right there. Two apple there are two markets: Pro and consumer. If you have "pro" tendancies then apple is hoping (by stiff arming you) into the Pro computer.

I'm speaking from the business side here, not the customer. I'd love a FW port, but I can see what apple is doing to differenciate their lines.

I just ordered mine :D I have never used firewire in my life so no big issue for me, but maybe that's why they took it out of the macbook because students , like me ,don't really use firewire. I am replacing my 12' slow powerbook which I paid $1,499 back in 2003 so I don't see why people are bugging on the price point, the clash of design and new FSB speed helping out the 2GHz is good for me. I will not regret the glossy screen either LCD shines through well. And I called to make sure the Backlit keyboard is included with the $1,249.00 ( small student discount ) I got. That's one of the big issues i had between buying the $999 one and the new one, but it was not the ONLY deciding factor. Having a future in graphic design the graphics chip upgrade was nice too. And of course the new design won me over more... can't wait to get it!

how can you get backlit keyboard on the 1299 version? it's exclusive to the 1599 version

I actually like the new MacBook (more than the new MacBook Pro) but FireWire is going to be the only nit-pick from me but I can still live without that. Does anyone here actually likes the new MacBook?

Very aggressive pricing...
You realize that was based on a rumor right?

My apologies, due to the fact that the internet sucks at tone, i thought you were just trying to be a smart ass by saying you wouldnt recommend apple.

FireWire 400 vs. USB 2.0 Hard Drive Performance Comparison
Suboptimal hard drive vs. suboptimal hard drive performance.
Seriously limiting external port vs. seriously limiting external port.
Nowhere near eSATA performance vs. nowhere near eSATA performance.

For simple moving around of date, the performance isn't so big to be unbearable. Often it'd be rather neglible. I can, however, understand the gripes about the port missing for video editing.

Love it.

The FW I really wanted to try seeing as Ive never used it before (dont own a mac, none of my laptops have had FW) but I guess i cant really miss what i've never had.

Other than that its great! Innovative with the trackpad and I really love the (backlit) keyboard.

Apple apologists are out in force tonight...

I know many pros who indeed use lowly 'consumer' machines such as Macbooks & iMacs for their pro work... either because they prefer the form factor or because they can't justify the price of the pro machines.

And last I checked, you can connect that little 13" macbook to a great big monitor...
