When your students graduate, they will be editing on real Pro machines at their jobs, as I cannot imagine anybody making professional editing on 13'' screens. If they will edit as just a hobby in the future, AVCHD might become more popular than HDV anyways. There seems to be already more AVCHD cameras than HDV ones in the market. What future are you worried about? At the moment, there is a low cost Macbook with firewire. No problems for this semester and probably for the next...
Of course, if all you want to do is rant that there is a low cost option with FW and high cost options with FW, but not a middle one, feel free to do so. I just would expect a more level headed advice from a teacher.
I edited professionally for a year on my 12" PowerBook and made thousands of dollars of supplemental income from it before I switched to something else. But they're not using it to make money. They're using it to develop their skills and prepare for a career later. The small size of the MacBook makes it convenient for them to take back and forth.
What is not level-headed about my advice, unless you're such a Mac zealot that you don't believe therre are any legitimate options besides Apple? Until now I've always recommended the MB because they could buy it with FCE pre-installed. But I am a computer agnostic. I use both and like both. So, unless Apple corrects this mistake, I will be recommending PC laptops in the future. It ultimately doesn't matter to me because I don't get a commission on either. But I think
