Finally time to retire the 2017 Apple TV 4K! That thing was starting to lag and scrolling was getting slow and annoying.

I only use wifi at home and don’t need the Ethernet port. I don’t do gaming either. The base model should be enough?

I did decide to buy the now "old" lightning version of the Siri remote from Apple on Amazon today (as Apple Canada has already removed it from their online store on their own site) to replace the black glass remote that everyone hated. I'd been thinking of upgrading the remote on my original 4K Apple TV to the new one for a while, but seeing as basically all my rechargeable things use lightning, might as well get it now.

He called ATV a hobby, not a flop.
Starts at about 29 minutes into this video.
And by the way? Apple TV take 2… didn’t do much better.
Thanks for posting that, but he didn't call it flop in the clip.

That clip was in line with his public comments why the ATV was a hobby for Apple.

Also, saying that it was a flop because Apple improved upon it in the middle of its model run is strange. That is like saying the early iPhones were a flop because Apple released the App Store later on.

Besides, after the Apple TV "Take 2", sales improved on the HW and iTunes sales and rentals increased.

Just like some other first Apple product line models, there are kinks that need working and Apple did that with the Apple TV 2, which focused on the best aspects of the ATV1, making it cheaper while adding Netflix support, and that sold very well.

Two bad Apple didn't keep the price low for the ATV4, maybe they would have kept their lead in streaming box sales that they had with the ATV2 and ATV3.

Really? Seems just as snappy as the day it was released to me.

The high end model is actually a bit cheaper in Canada than in the US, mainly because the price difference is $20 in Canadian dollars too.

64 GB - CA$179 = US$130.20
128 GB - CA$199 = US$144.75

Considering I despise the remote of my 2017 4K model, maybe I should upgrade. Otherwise though, I have no other reason to upgrade. Hmm... What about OS speed? And what's the RAM on this thing?

Try to sell on marketplace, people are confused about the different versions

Pretty sure you can get easily 130-150 $CA, which won’t make you cost much to get better remote.

Is the 4K any better than HD? Some movies I buy on iTunes in SD? I do have a 4K but wondering if the 4K picture quality is better?
Ah, Yes. 4K is light speeds better than HD and you will have HDR 10+, which, if you have a good 4K TV, will make you cry with joy. ;)

Well, the existing Apple TV already had Dolby Vision, which arguably is superior to HDR10+. Or at least as good anyway, depending upon who you talk to.

Did the 2021 ATV 4K model have Thread support? I have a Sony TV, so I don’t think the HDR10+ will offer any upsides, right?

Trying to see if there’s even a reason for me to upgrade???
Yes, it does.

Apple TV 4K Gen2 and Homepod mini are Thread compatible and act as hubs.

Yes i have a 4K TV but not everything I watch is 4K. Some iTunes movies are SD but some are 4K so I may notice bigger differences on each movie. I preordered the 64gb model tonight to upgrade my Hd one

Majority of people don't have a 120hz TV, and majority of content isn't available in 120Hz either. majority of content is still 24/30fps, which might be why Apple doesn't support 120hz yet.

Um....Apple TV *does* support lossless audio? It exists on my 2017 model...
With 120hz support theres no more HDMI resync for when frame rate changes. Since the TV (for those of us with 120s) 120hz is popping up in more and more TV models too. Not just pricey OLEDs.

My current Apple TV HD turned 7 years old and is still going strong (with the upgraded remote). Super happy how long-living this has turned out to be.

Would be helpful to see a side by side comparison of this vs the older Apple TV 4K. I cant see a huge difference. Doesn't the older version also support HDR10+ with tvOS 16?

No, it’s available to all Apple TVs which support tvOS 16
Negative.

Why the heck is ethernet optional?!

Many people have their Internet router and main TV in the same location because that's where the cable line comes in. TVs and streaming boxes should always have an ethernet port so you can plug it in if possible. This is not only faster but reduces usage of WiFi bandwidth, resulting in better performance for other devices.

Why is Apple starting to make basic wired connectivity optional on non-portable devices? They did the same with the iMac; the cheapest model lacks Ethernet.
many don’t have Ethernet, why do I have to get the Ethernet port when I will never use it? i would bet 70% ppl don’t hook their Apple TV 4K up to Ethernet. Sure we could benefit from it, but my wifi ax6000 is fast enough for my appletv. lets Let the market decide if it can support an Ethernet less version.

It totally depends on what you want to do with your ATV.

I constantly have out of storage messages on my 64GB ATVs, so getting the 128GB alone is worth it to me.

Most people probably just care about streaming, but game performance should be a huge improvement with the new ATV4K3.

The overall differences between the ATV4K2 (A12) and ATV4K3 (A15) should be much greater than the differences between the ATV4K1 and ATV4K2 (A10X).

Many games actually run better on the older ATV4K1 than the ATV4K2. I have both, but the older A10X ATV is on my primary TV.

Really looking forward to the new ATV4K3, I purchased a 128GB a few hours ago.

LEt's be real here.

IT's all about you (and others) not being able to stand that someone who wants wifi only can buy an ATV for $130 instead of $150. That's it.

You would actually be happier if the new ATV started at $179 with no wifi only option. ;)

Because none of your points make a lick of sense. YOu get ethernet if you want it. Expectation met.

A wifi only option is perfectly acceptable in the marketplace as the market shows. Even Apple's own data surely shows a huge portion, probably a majority, use wifi and not ethernet on their ATV.

No kidding. Want Ethernet? Spent a whole extra $20 or whatever and get it. No need to bitch about it.

Fun fact: I spent the extra money on the Ethernet version but won't be using the Ethernet port. I will be using the extra memory though.

US$14.50 extra in Canada, since it's only CA$20 more here.

As you said, "many people" have their router there. As you didn't say "most" does that mean that "most" have it somewhere else? Many don't get their TV via cable anymore.

Most people I know have the router by their computer. Where, many had a phone jack so they could backfeed the phone phone system if they got their landline from their internet company (not that they necessarily have their phone line any more).

I don't have mine come in at the TV, but I do have Ethernet run to the TV/stereo setup with a switch there (AppleTV, TV, DVD, TiVo, plus a Time Capsule with 8TB drives for the Infuse app on the AppleTV).

Plus, Apple needed something to separate the two dollar amounts so it's not just a storage question (now it's features). I find it highly unlikely that anyone with Ethernet at their TV is not going to pay the extra $20 for Ethernet/64GB more, and thread.

Now that modern TVs have all the streaming apps what is the point of an Apple TV?❓ All I can think of is viewing iCloud photos and playing mobile games.
