Now that modern TVs have all the streaming apps what is the point of an Apple TV?❓ All I can think of is viewing iCloud photos and playing mobile games.

For me I’ve yet to find a smart TV whose UI doesn’t drive me mad.
I personally just find it’s a better experience and I happy to pay for it.

Why 2 versions with only 20$ of difference???

I would have priced them 119 and 159, or 99 and 149$.

Why no « find my remote »?

Getting really sad to see. upcharge for ethernet and ethernet model is needed for thread homekit. I wish Apple started taking more risks and stopped increasing prices and removing features. I say this as a long time apple fan.
You won’t see that change while Tim Cook is still CEO. He’s ops centric. His entire mission is to make Apple the most margin as possible and that’s what he’s done. Great for shareholders, crap for customers.

Well in my case I just got a new 2022 Samsung TV and I can tell you the OS is trash. Slow, buggy, and won't output Dolby to my receiver for some reason. The Apple TV interface is just so much smoother, has more steaming apps, plus I actually use the Fitness app for a workout here and there.

The smart TV OS/UI on all major brands are terrible and/or laden with ads. Would be nice if Apple partnered with someone to bring out a TV with Apple TV built in but I suspect the premium Apple would demand would not be rational or justified. I suspect many would buy nonetheless. 🤣

You can get the AppleTV+ app on a number of TVs. But as you said, the interface sucks. Every time I turn on that TV I wish I never bought it. It constantly asks for **** to be updated. I hate it. I'm glad I don't turn it on very often.

As for my AppleTV, I see that I have the A1842 with 64GB of memory, that is mostly used. So the 128GB version I ordered will be great.

Have you used modern smart TV interfaces? Most of them are gorram terrible, slow, and a pain in the ass to use.

Even one of the better ones, LG WebOS, is annoying and clunky compared to my Apple TV.

ATV provides an experience that is sufficiently better that many of us think it's worth it.

Apple Silicon doesn't support HDMI natively, only DisplayPort, which means every HDMI connection is realized with an HDMI 2.0 converter chip (iFixit link). Either there are no DP to HDMI 2.1 converter chips or they cost 3 cents more. Giving Apples history in penny pinching...
The new Apple TVs have HDMI 2.1.

The 2021 model has "2.1" as well, but thats just specification trickery. You can claim you have 2.1 if the port supports eARC, even though all other specs are 2.0. If the 2022 model has full feature/real 2.1, then Apple would surely advertise 120hz.

I'm curious, why do you need audio passthrough?

The ATV decodes whatever codec is in use and then sends the raw multi-channel LPCM down the HDMI cable. There should be zero quality difference between that and having the receiver do the decoding. If anything, decoding in the ATV is better in the long run as support can be added for new codecs that your receiver might not get.
Atmos

We all hate the “if Steve was alive” stuff, but does anyone think there’d be two Apple TV models if Steve was around? These penny-pinching decisions and baked-in up sells in categories like this make the product lineup confusing and muddled. There’s nothing elegant about the state of Apple’s product lineup. It’s confusing and at times flat out embarrassing.

On another note, no mention of the ability to output full HD audio so I’m assuming we’re still stuck at 24/48. Very cool that Apple begins offering HD audio up to 24/192 with no elegant way of listening to it. Very Apple. Very Tim Cook.

Many of us lament Tim Cook’s bean counting, but if they don’t get a product person in as the next CEO, this general sort of disjointed product malarkey will only get worse.
Excuse me. Are you complaining about the Apple TVs being upgraded AND costing much less than their predecessor?

Not everyone’s receivers/soundbars support atmos over lpcm. My samsung soundbar only support atmos through DD+ or TrueHD bitstream. That’s why the nvidia shield is superior for my use case.

Hopefully Sony

Considering Sony is the only major premium TV manufacturer to use Android TV instead of their own proprietary smart TV platform, plus the fact that their phones use Android, you have to think that they have a tight relationship with Google that might make partnering with Apple a no go.

curious question-

Why no WiFi 6E on the Apple TV? Seems like it would benefit just as much as the iPad Pro. I concede WiFi 6E routers are still coming out but still seems like the Apple TV would benefit greatly as well.

You think?
4K on Netflix is like 20-30 mbps.
Even crappy 10 yo router will do that.
