Apple Announces New Apple TV 4K With A15 Bionic Chip and HDR10+ for $129

Really do not understand the USB-C fanboys!

I’ve got the last model with lightning remote and think I last charged it 6 months ago!

What does the interval have to do with anything?
People (not everyone) just want to move to having one cable for everything

So now people have to go out and buy a new router as well?o_O

? No change to Wifi Support. Up to Wifi 6 (802.11ax) over 2.5 and 5.0 GHz.

Man I want an M1 Apple TV so badly to replace my Shield TV pro!

Shield TV still necessary if you want to play DTS-MA or Dolby TrueHD soundtracks in their original quality. Apple TV highest quality support is for E-AC-3 (Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound), and Dolby Atmos.

What in the world is thread support?

Home devices network to each other rather than going through your router..

I’m curious to see how well AirPlay mirroring to Apple TV works with this, via Wi-fi 6E.

It won't via 6e - not supported. No change from previous version - 2.5 and 5 Ghz networks up to ax.

I long for a day where I don’t have to use a shield pro just to get audio pass through.

You may have a long wait Apple justification I heard is that they need to transcode in order to support Siri.

I thought that for 4K video you need around 20mbps,

That's for a streaming service. If you are playing an .mkv file via a program such as Infuse or Plex it can exceed 100 mbps.

Um....Apple TV *does* support lossless audio? It exists on my 2017 model...

As above it transcodes so it is lossy. Running a test on a ripped .mkv 4k movie (The Adams Family) with a 4150 kb/s audio track it is limited by the AppleTV app to 363 kbps in the digital copy.

If it has ATMOS and 7.1, what streaming would you be watching where you need passthrough? I feel like the content you stream from these devices would be those formats.

If passthrough were supported we wouldn't have transcoded (lossy) audio,

The ATV decodes whatever codec is in use and then sends the raw multi-channel LPCM down the HDMI cable. There should be zero quality difference between that and having the receiver do the decoding. If anything, decoding in the ATV is better in the long run as support can be added for new codecs that your receiver might not get.

Wish it did, but it doesn't do a direct stream without decoding. Supposedly they need to do this in order to support Siri. Highest quality decoder they use is E-AC-3 (Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound), and Dolby Atmos.

Many new receivers support firmware updates which could allow for new codecs.

I mean bitstream lossless HD audio such as DTS-HD and True HD with atmos.

Not supported. Decoded to E-AC-3.

Why the heck is ethernet optional?!

Many people have their Internet router and main TV in the same location because that's where the cable line comes in. TVs and streaming boxes should always have an ethernet port so you can plug it in if possible. This is not only faster but reduces usage of WiFi bandwidth, resulting in better performance for other devices.

Why is Apple starting to make basic wired connectivity optional on non-portable devices? They did the same with the iMac; the cheapest model lacks Ethernet.
It's not because they're horribly cheap, it's to save precious space inside and make waterproofing easier, you dummy.

I bought a remote case with a spot to put an AirTag.
The only problem? Can find the remote since a week!! (Lost the remote like an hour after the order!).
Ouch!
That does not make sense that Apple will be able to sell AirTag to put on a remote which should have ability by itself.

I did request "find my remote" / U1 chip on their product feedback website.

Probably won't change anything, at least I tried!

Good to see a new Apple TV. I only upgraded mine last year once it came out that you can use HomePods with passthrough. I love it. Since I have a budget LG 4K TV, and not a Samsung there's no point in me upgrading to this model for HDR10+.

Great to see a lower starting price as well. Intrigued where they go next with the Apple TV.

The audio bit is sorta untrue... Blurays with plain TrueHD or DTSHD tracks get unpacked to raw mulichannel LPCM and are lossless... What is lost is the height channel metadata if it is an TrueHD ATMOS or DTS:X track. You still get the lossless base TrueHD or DTS-HD in raw PCM though... it isn't sent as lossy DD+.

Have you used modern smart TV interfaces? Most of them are gorram terrible, slow, and a pain in the ass to use.

Even one of the better ones, LG WebOS, is annoying and clunky compared to my Apple TV.

ATV provides an experience that is sufficiently better that many of us think it's worth it.

Thanks for you and everyone else who answered's input. What I'm hearing is that there isn't any USP other than the User Interface is much better. I haven't used a recent Apple TV, I have an LGTV and that's been, mostly, fine. Although the new Amazon Prime app is so slow. Maybe I will check out an Apple TV next time I go to an Apple store.

How do y'all lose the remote so easily come on it's probably in your couch cushions or somewhere near the TV.

Figured this was coming. Anytime Amazon knocks the price down significantly on an Apple product, you know it is getting updated during the next refresh.

Saying that, I still went ahead and picked up a '21 version for $109 last week. It works for us since we don't watch a lot of TV, but for the extra $20 the new one is certainly the better deal.

Right, but the new iPads have 6e. So I’m wondering how AirPlay mirroring would be with ATV on ethernet and iPad on 6e.

Now also wondering how performance would be with both devices on ethernet 🤔

Would the faster processor allow for less “black screen” time when going between the menus and playing the actual video/show and vice-versa? I find that delay a little annoying (I know, in the grand scheme of things it’s not a big deal, but if this tightens it up, great)

No 120hz, still. Why is this such a problem for them? It divides all formats evenly for super smooth playback. 24, 30, and 60. It's more about THAT than, "gaming." That's why we home theater nerds WHINE.
It has a 2.1 port so the option of vrr and 120 is there. I'll be curious to test it when it comes in and see how dynamically it scales on a 2.1 tv.

The prior version had 2.1 but lacked the proper chip to actually do VRR and 120. They didn't realize this until after their initial marketing launch. Then, rather hilariously, had to walk that feature back. I see nothing in the tech specs for this new one that shows this is as now available. They would have listed it there. Most likely using the same chips as the prior for the HDMI. The HDMI specs don't require ALL features be implemented in order to claim something has 2.1. So, it's not all on Apple's shoulders. Having said that, I swear the ATV division is a actual room of monkeys swinging on tires.

I’ll be getting a 128GB model, but it’s frustrating I need to pay for the extra storage. I’m currently using a first gen Apple TV 4K.
My bedroom TV is a Panasonic OLED, so it will be nice getting both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision.
Everything is hardwired, so I need ethernet, and I use Nanoleaf bulbs with Thread.
