Just ordered the 128GB version on the Veteran Apple Store for $134.

I have been waiting for larger storage for a very long time.

We all hate the “if Steve was alive” stuff, but does anyone think there’d be two Apple TV models if Steve was around? These penny-pinching decisions and baked-in up sells in categories like this make the product lineup confusing and muddled. There’s nothing elegant about the state of Apple’s product lineup. It’s confusing and at times flat out embarrassing.

On another note, no mention of the ability to output full HD audio so I’m assuming we’re still stuck at 24/48. Very cool that Apple begins offering HD audio up to 24/192 with no elegant way of listening to it. Very Apple. Very Tim Cook.

Many of us lament Tim Cook’s bean counting, but if they don’t get a product person in as the next CEO, this general sort of disjointed product malarkey will only get worse.

Where is this HDR10+ content going to come from? Are movies that you can buy on iTunes now going to support both Dolby Vision and HDR10+ (basically just for those with Samsung TVs)?

Also will Netflix support HDR10+? What about the other apps? Hope it’s not gonna be an Apple Tv Plus-only feature. That would be a bummer.

Question: My 2017 Sony TV (HDMI 2.0) can pass Atmos from built in Android TV apps to my Sonos system. My 1st Gen Apple TV 4K cannot (all audio is converted to 5.1 instead). Do the newer 4k models pass through Atmos on HDMI 2.0 tv's or is HDMI 2.1 a requirement. To be honest, I detest the built in Android TV but use it because of the audio advantage.

Im not disappointed with the loss of ethernet in the cheap version... though it is a nice to have as a fallback that couldn't be that expensive to implement. What is surprising is them seemingly leaving Thread out of the wifi-only one as well.

They bumped the storage to 64GB/128GB from 32GB/64GB which is good. Also it isn't mentioned anywhere but I assume this has 4GB of RAM (vs. 3GB in the A10X/A12 version). I don't think they ever had a 3GB RAM A15 chip, but would probably have to wait for a teardown to confirm.

Its totally a software thing but still no passthrough, though LPCM is lossless you can't get ATMOS (or DTSX) out with it. The only ATMOS is Dolby MAT+Atmos... but they managed to add support for HDR+....

and USBC on the new remote.

All cheaper than last versions. Not bad. The $150 wifi+ethernet is the one to get.
Feel the same way. Lots of whining but I'm really pleased about all those upgrades over my 2017 4k model.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a TV without DV support. I think Amazon is the only streaming service that supports HDR10+ and seems like they are tipping towards DV with Rings of Power.

They only know how to make what they buy.

They bought PA Semi so they make good chips.

Apple was once known for innovative software experiences because they had bought NeXT, but that seems to have run its course.

On every platform people wonder: What is the utility of the powerful chips?

With the Apple TV they are literally telling you: Go out and use our competitors controllers (XBox and Playstation) and come play our third-rate games with them on our box. Why? Because we have an A15 so we'll put it in a box.

I actually thought they might have done something with it this time.

It's like at Taco Bell they have a million things on the menu but it's just the same few ingredients.

Tim Cook is uninspired.

Is there a reason they don't allow us to download movies purchased on iTunes to our Apple tv's? I rarely have connection issues but some family movie nights it happens, I'd love to be able to download a movie prior to avoid possible issues.
Just a guess, but maybe something to do with licensing/distribution rights that Apple has for those films.

if I’m not mistaken, there *was* two Apple TVs when Steve was around.
A 40GB version and a 160GB version.
It also started at $299, and required a Mac or PC with iTunes to load it with any content.
It was one of Apple’s biggest flops in the Jobs era.
As for I/O up charging, Steve’s Apple did that too.
With the old PowerMacs, you had to buy the more expensive model for more capable superdrives and such.
Same with the iPod, certain features were restricted to models with more storage.
In fact, the third gen iPod Touch got a faster processor and voice control support… But only if you opted for the 32 or 64 GB model. The 8 GB model got nothing, and lost software support a year and a half earlier.

As some have noted, the previous Apple TV 4k already supports HDR10+ via tvOS 16.

For those wondering where HDR10+ content comes from: Amazon, one of the largest tech companies in the world. Some newer Android devices also shoot video in HDR10+. It's the only dynamic metadata format supported by Samsung TVs which...are the #1 best-selling TVS in the world.

Ironically, HDR10+ is "more open" than Dolby Vision but....for whatever reason, just about everyone supports Dolby Vision (Netflix, Apple TV+, Disney+) if they support a dynamic metadata HDR format and...the only streaming service I know of that supports HDR10+ is Amazon Prime Video. Lots of 4k Blurays support HDR10+, but that's not really relevant to discussion about a streaming box.

Having said all this...despite tvOS 16 supporting HDR10+ on the current Apple TV 4k...they (Amazon) still have not updated their app to support HDR10+. Source: I have Prime Video and the outgoing Apple TV 4k...the only way I can get HDR10+ on Amazon Prime Video is...by using the slugging app built into my TV. The Apple TV app still throws an HDR10 signal.

What’s the point of the a15 there’s nothing on the Apple TV that needs a cpu update the games run on older ones fine
Remember VR is a few months away and this will open the door for more intensive games usually resigned to consoles.

I am disappointed that they didn't add 1080p to 4k AI upscaling as a new feature. Nvidia Shield has had that for agents, and the new 3rd generation Amazon Fire Cube coming out next week added that.
1080p to 4K is just a multiplication function, no AI upscaling needed. What native content resolutions would Apple TV support that needs AI upscaling?

It's useful on the NVIDIA Shield for gaming, because that's often not native 1080p, and for home media streaming (which is not a common use case for Apple TV).

For years there was no reason to buy anything but the base model Apple TV.
Now there's no reason to buy the base model. Make future you proud, spend the $20 to include the Ethernet port

I mentioned it a few replies before you, but even Amazon has caved and started adding DV to new show. Obviously Samsung sells the most TVs, but the high end market is dominated by Sony/LG and DV has a lot to do with it.

AHAHAHAH
Apple TV updated with old processors for years and sold at stratospheric prices to do nothing, in the end they had to present the real update after selling old hardware for years.

Has anything changed? No, the same limits as always.

A tv2/3 is also fine for what this useless box is now.
