Yep, why is this so hard to implement? No audio pass through, no care. I long for a day where I don’t have to use a shield pro just to get audio pass through.
I'm curious, why do you need audio passthrough?

The ATV decodes whatever codec is in use and then sends the raw multi-channel LPCM down the HDMI cable. There should be zero quality difference between that and having the receiver do the decoding. If anything, decoding in the ATV is better in the long run as support can be added for new codecs that your receiver might not get.

Im not disappointed with the loss of ethernet in the cheap version... though it is a nice to have as a fallback that couldn't be that expensive to implement. What is surprising is them seemingly leaving Thread out of the wifi-only one as well.

They bumped the storage to 64GB/128GB from 32GB/64GB which is good. Also it isn't mentioned anywhere but I assume this has 4GB of RAM (vs. 3GB in the A10X/A12 version). I don't think they ever had a 3GB RAM A15 chip, but would probably have to wait for a teardown to confirm.

Its totally a software thing but still no passthrough, though LPCM is lossless you can't get ATMOS (or DTSX) out with it. The only ATMOS is Dolby MAT+Atmos... but they managed to add support for HDR+....

and USBC on the new remote.

All cheaper than last versions. Not bad. The $150 wifi+ethernet is the one to get.

I'm baffled by this. How are people still not getting 300 mbps over wifi, and what you would use more for when streaming movies/shows?
Consider all the other devices on the network, laptops running wireless backups, etc. Then you have your answer.

Wired or in the 6E bands. Streaming has no place displacing bandwidth in a home with lots of technology.

Not sure why we have to do this every bloody time, but the UK price includes the VAT where the US price does not include applicable sales taxes. It also doesn't help the GBP's value has cratered compared to the USD.

Here in Seattle, that $129 translates to $142 after factoring in our 10% combined sales taxes.
Even excluding taxes and the low pound, the UK price is over $10 more, at least for the better model. Perhaps Apple thought our government hadn’t finished trashing our economy yet so factored that in for the future.

Yeah, for me wanting wired is not for performance on the ATV so much as it's wanting to remove needless traffic from my WiFi.

There's no reason to have the ATV using airtime when my network switch is RIGHT FREAKING THERE and I can plug it in with a two foot cable.

My other ATV in the bedroom is on WiFi and that's fine. But I hardly watch TV in there!

Um....Apple TV *does* support lossless audio? It exists on my 2017 model...
True sorry, I mean bitstream lossless HD audio such as DTS-HD and True HD with atmos. It’s no surprise it isn’t there but still would have made me purchase if it were, and with little else to add it could have helped

Not quite, has removed ethernet, thread and reduced space to 64GB for $129.
I think you mean increased space on base storage. The 64GB in the new model is up from 32GB in the last three releases. You can get up to 128GB on the new one.

Is there any reason I would need this is I own the 2021 Apple TV?
If you play games on your ATV, yes. If not, your ATV4K2 is probably overkill for what you do with it.

I might be wrong, but I thought that for 4K video you need around 20mbps, wifi can do that. Don’t get me wrong for me is Ethernet or nothing
Some people might have spotty wifi coverage that can drop out or have high latency. This would be even more important for tasks happening in realtime. For example, if you use Steamlink, then ethernet is probably better.

The extra storage is fairly pointless - competing streaming sticks from Google, Amazon and Nvidia only have 8-16 GB of storage and don't typically run into any issues - you only need/can really use that storage for streaming apps. Even with a heavy complement of streaming apps installed, even the old 32 GB base model was really overkill unless you want to run a Plex server, etc. On my 2021 model, the most storage used by a single app is 145 MB, and most are under 100 MB.

Struggling to see what point there is in upgrading from my 2021 model - the 2021 model is already very smooth (and faster than GoogleTV Chromecast, Fire Cube, etc.) with the A12, so I don't think the A15 adds much, so all you get is remote upgraded to USB-C charging?

I am disappointed that they didn't add 1080p to 4k AI upscaling as a new feature. Nvidia Shield has had that for agents, and the new 3rd generation Amazon Fire Cube coming out next week added that.

I would have gotten one of these if it weren't for the fact Apple created an ATV app on Google TVs. I don't want another remote to have to search for! But I will get it when the processor in my TV becomes dog slow....
The Apple TV app is just for accessing their original content. The Apple TV itself is better than using the apps on your Google enabled TV.

The Veteran Apple Store has the ATV4K3 priced @116 for the 64GB and $134 for the 128GB:

No ethernet port… really guys? I guess the refurbished Apple TV 4K my family got in 2018 lives on.
That's what I thought too, but the 2nd gen only supports Apple threaded devices. Not third-party thread devices. Meaning this 3rd gen is the first to support full thread support, or Matter support.

Honest question. I've got a 2017 4K Apple TV (with a A10X soc) - any reason to upgrade? I never noticed it being slow.
I wouldn’t tbh. I ordered one because it was a 4th Gen (2015) and it’s getting a little slow. I could deal with that but that ATV developed a weird problem where it will no longer do OTA software updates. I now have to do a software restore which makes me start over.

I f it wasn’t for that the 2015 ATV would still be fine.

For you there is probably no point to upgrade. But it still a great upgrade for those with old Apple TV HDs, new users, or people buying a secondary Apple TV. You don't need to buy every iteration of a product.
