Too many important details glossed over. A few that stand out are how do iOS devices join in? Do they need to have a copy of the app or will there be a a universal remote?

I'm guessing that the "second" player will have to have a copy of the app. They probably would have said that they do not need a copy if they didn't.

The sad part is that the new Apple TV will be outdated before it is even released. The next Fire TV will have 4k and its release is imminent (it just showed up on the FCC site and the old Fire TV is out of stock on Amazon).

Yeah you have a point. Why after 3+ years of no update do they demo it and then not release it until the end of next month, especially when we know new Roku and FireTV are coming?

So um. No core technical updates on the tv? Like 4k or even Dolby Atmos? Come on! It is for home theaters!

I wonder how much integration third-party apps will be allowed to have?

For example, if I have a tv show episode on my Plex server and a Plex app for tvOS, will it show up under "available on" next to iTunes and Netflix or whatever when I search for that episode using Siri?

I am going to venture to say that 85% of the population does not have the internet ability to stream 4K without problems (either by choice of plan or a terrible connection like I have). In time, 4K makes sense, but for todays internet I don't see an issue.

Even if there were 4K support, you'd still be watching 1080p and 720p content. The industry hasn't moved to 4k yet.

But there's something 4K TV users with no 4K content could take advantage of right away, and it'd look way better... PHOTOS. ;-)

a couple of things...

1. will the UI be available in Dark Mode...you know when watching a movie within a darkened room not need to BLIND folks.
2. will the UI be available on older models? I understand not the gaming, etc. but a super-slimmed down version should be.

Will Siri search your local content i.e. I've got over 1,000 movies ripped from did and bluray and properly tagged and stored on a sever and added to my local iTunes - so will Siri search these as well as online iTunes content?

Lord, I hope it will. Frankly, I am just desperately hoping there is a native app to play your own content. I do NOT want to have to download Plex just to be able to watch all the stuff I have ripped.

I think it would be a matter of days for people to start supporting the existing MFI Joysticks for iOS Devices to the new AppleTV, Yet if Apple Could have developed it as an accessory, it would have been awesome.

I'm excited for the new Apple TV
I was a little surprised they went with A8 proc instead of A9 after they kept saying the A9 was desktop class processing and console class graphics. I would think an A9 with 4GB RAM could be serious competition for casual gaming like Nintendo Wii(u).

I'm also wondering:
* With the Bluetooth 4.0 can you pair a set of headphones to the Apple TV?
* HomeKit
* More detailed system (hardware & software/OS specs)
* USB-C port just for "maintenance" still?
* Accessories (game pad, etc..) through bluetooth or USB-C port ?
* HDMI CEC support?

You can watch and listen to your content. I am doing that now without plex, on my Apple TV. You do need another computer running though, just like you do with plex running plex server.

Computer running iTunes
Apple tv
Home sharing turned on

Your content is now available on your apple tv.

Thew new OS overhaul and the remote i actually really like. at the time, the original remote was great, but its outdated now. its too basic, the new remote fits the future.

what I'm disappointed with;

the aesthetic design of the new apple tv is ugly - its fat and its still the same plastic body. i understand they had to keep it in a competitive position price wise, but i really wanted an aluminium body.

concerns:

all the new features are great for on demand services, but i own a large library of my own blu ray rips of tv shows and films in my iTunes library - the new os mentions iTunes but I'm assuming it means the store, not my personal library. Nothing was shown regarding how to browse my iTunes library (that isn't in the cloud).

exciting future:

the apps store and apples subtle move into the gaming space.

No 4K support is a deal-breaker for me. It's 2015 and Apple are still holding back on features that should have been included already.

Also, the lack of a new design for the Apple TV box is off-putting. It's been years since they've properly updated the Apple TV and all they can do is give us the same, dated design, except slightly more overweight.

The NVIDEA Shield TV still holds the top spot for streaming media devices by miles, followed by the Amazon Fire TV for me.

Agree to 4K and local media search, though an app might remedy the search thing to some extent. No 4K is a deal breaker for sure - what were they thinking?

They're thinking :apple:TV5 in about 6-18 months. It won't take long for people to want to display the 4K they shoot on the new phones at 4K on their 4K TVs. Thus, sell these now and sell an upgrade in 6-18 months.

And I'd cut that 18 to 12 (months) if the new iPad had also rolled out with a 4K camera. Now I think new iPads next year come with 4K video and THEN :apple:TV5 follows soon thereafter.

Doubt me? Look back at history. iPhones went 1080p, then iPads and then we got a 1080p :apple:TV.

Plex app and integrate local media in search please.

The fact that Siri will only work (so far) with apps like Netflix, iTunes, Hulu etc may mean this will work like Fire TV and Plex searching will never work... I hope i'm wrong as that's what i want, but so far it doesn't look good.

If they put out a 4K capable one now, they would miss out on getting more money from the people that will buy a 4th gen anyway.

Why pass up on the opportunity to make money on a lower-end model marketed as a high-end model while you work on driving the costs down on the "next generation 4K capable" one?

Also didn't see one peep about being able to access content from your computer based iTunes library... While it might, it's never wise to assume Apple will support something forever, even in their own ecosystem.

Just ordered a Roku 3, since the 4th gen Apple TV seems to have nothing for me.

Having a close look at the screens during the presentation there wasn't anything similar to the current "Computer" app so (i) they just didn't show it, (ii) you access local content through the "tv shows" etc. app and it shows local vs iTunes store or (iii) there is no access to local content (can't believe that would happen).

No, I know you can do that right now. I literally do it every single day. The new announcement mentions nothing about streaming your own, non-iTunes Store bought content, and I am hoping there is a native app that comes with the TVOS and it isn't a 3rd party app, like Plex, that allows me to view my own files.

With each AppleTV update, streaming your own content has gotten more and more marginalized. It is the most important and frequent feature for me and my family. I am hoping they don't treat this feature like Roku or Amazon have treated it, and leave it to the 3rd parties to figure out
