No optical out. Bummer.

I wanted to use this with my 27" display, as I don't have a TV. But I'm not going to get a dedicated TV, just to connect an Apple TV to it.

Does anybody know any device that will split HDMI input into picture (HDMI output to display) and sound? Sound output can be anything: optical, analog cinch, I don't care, as long as it's stereo.

It seems really nice, but it turns your TV into a computer. I can't wait for my TV to lag after one or two updates. Also, Siri never works that well in real life.

However, if it does work like they're showing it, it will be incredible. I hope it's a success.
People claim Siri doesn't work, but I use it daily and find it awesome. That's an old line that doesn't speak to the reality.

Having a close look at the screens during the presentation there wasn't anything similar to the current "Computer" app so (i) they just didn't show it, (ii) you access local content through the "tv shows" etc. app and it shows local vs iTunes store or (iii) there is no access to local content (can't believe that would happen).

If Option iii turns out to be the case, I will literally leave the Apple ecosystem out of spite.

Very excited about this. The only thing I was really disappointed about was no mention of a TV subscription service. We still need archaic rabbit ears for local channels and the only real option is Sling TV with it's limited lineup. I guess they must be working through deals with the major networks before releasing anything about it.

Actually, to stream the locals, it will require deals with each of the locals (save some stations owned by the national affiliate). Last I saw, that's more than 1000 stations. Personally, I wish they would have bypassed that delay and built in a locals HD tuner(s) or two so they could roll out the much-rumored TV subscription service sooner than later. I think that would also give them more leverage in striking deals with local stations as those who demand too much could be left to "free" (no streaming fees) over the air. IMO, that would have got more deals done more quickly for those who need/want streaming (instead of an antenna).

The universal search is nice. TiVo has had it for a while now and it works perfectly. Hopefully they let you set it up to not show results from services you aren't subscribed to and/or that cost extra $ like TiVo does, but knowing Apple they'll want you to buy the show/movie from them.

Meh. My Roku3 has had this for two years. I have an AppleTV 3 right now and a Roku 3. I'm an all-Apple person, but I almost never use the AppleTV. We use the Roku almost constantly.

I better not have to buy a new unit to get these features. I'm fine with the old remote. Don't care for Apple logging all my voice commands.
How are you going to game on the old remote? Sorry, but that's some really old hardware. You shouldn't expect too much of an update on it, although I'm sure some features will transfer over.

Lord, I hope it will. Frankly, I am just desperately hoping there is a native app to play your own content. I do NOT want to have to download Plex just to be able to watch all the stuff I have ripped.

You can watch and listen to your content. I am doing that now without plex, on my Apple TV. You do need another computer running though, just like you do with plex running plex server.

Computer running iTunes
Apple tv
Home sharing turned on

Your content is now available on your apple tv.
No, I know you can do that right now. I literally do it every single day. The new announcement mentions nothing about streaming your own, non-iTunes Store bought content, and I am hoping there is a native app that comes with the TVOS and it isn't a 3rd party app, like Plex, that allows me to view my own files.

With each AppleTV update, streaming your own content has gotten more and more marginalized. It is the most important and frequent feature for me and my family. I am hoping they don't treat this feature like Roku or Amazon have treated it, and leave it to the 3rd parties to figure out

Ah, gotcha. I too hope they don't take that away. I don't see them doing that, but one never knows. Heck I would equate them doing that to the music side. Sorry you can only play stuff you purchased from Apple.... Oh boy.....

Apple TV S will have 4k. ;-)

Seriously though, there is no content that I am aware of that is 4K not to mention only a small percentage of users will even have a 4K TV. Add to that the enormous bandwidth needed to stream it and it's no wonder it doesn't have it.
Both Amazon and Netflix offer 4k. Limited at this time but still available. In addition there is a hugh amount of 4K video on Utube.

+1 was a bit worried when i didn't see a "computers" app... maybe we will know when the SDK is released later.

Late October? Bummer. Also no mention of Amazon Prime... hopefully that will be in place before launch. i probably won't purchase until I know it has it as that is one reason I don't use my AppleTV much anymore since I do a lot with Amazon Prime.

I have actually sent a mail to Jeff Bezos to support Amazon Prime on Apple TV, and his Customer support people gave an Assurance that they will look into it, i suppose it would help if you too could mail Mr. Bezos.

Dude, it's totally come down in price already. No reason not to get a 4k tv these days.
they're all CRAP... Otherwise.... Hey, why not... I'd rather buy a surplus Plasma, to join my existing one, than current less than 65 inch bargain basement 4Ks. LCD in general is plain horrible no matter the resolution except in the very top end TV's (and even there its no plasma or OLED...)

I am going to venture to say that 85% of the population does not have the internet ability to stream 4K without problems (either by choice of plan or a terrible connection like I have). In time, 4K makes sense, but for todays internet I don't see an issue.

Same excuses speculated back when we argued "720p is good enough" (because Apple still maxed it's "HD" at 720p). The Internet streams data- it doesn't care if it's 4K or 720p. If you want to download any bigger file, it just takes longer to get enough data to start playing. If you don't want to wait because your own broadband is just too slow, opt for the 1080p or 720p version of the same video. OR plan your viewing by starting the download tonight so that it's ready to watch tomorrow.

Waiting for "the whole internet" to be upgraded would be a forever wait. There's always going to be segment still limited to speeds as slow as dial up.

Anyone who feels the other way, please report back after Apple rolls out a 4K :apple:TV5 so that there is an Apple way to play the 4K shot on iPhones at 4K on 4K televisions and then rip into Apple for not waiting for the whole Internet to be upgraded.

1080p??????? They've got to be kidding. I have a 65" 4K LG TV that gorgeous. My Android box can do 4K.... Typical Apple: just enough to get you interested and waiting for the next revision in a year to give it better specs. Jesus, they've been working on this thing for years, you'd think they would admit 4K is here to stay.

I will be getting this for my living room TV, but I am a bit perplexed by the design of this. It's simply the same design from 3 years ago, but bulkier? lol.

If anything it should be slimmer and more manageable space wise. I just bought a 48" Sony Bravia for my room and am wondering if it will even fit under it.

I think it is a longshot that they would go that far, but given that Roku and Amazon rely on 3rd party apps for this feature, I am fearful Apple might say "Well, the competition doesn't offer it and a consumer can always use Airplay, so why do we have to offer it."

I might literally turn into Anger from Inside Out if this happens.
