Why the hell would you buy an iMac or a Mac Mini when you can get deals like this on a PC? Throw in a cheap 24" monitor and you've got a MUCH better machine for less than half the price. The build quality/materials may not be a nice as Apple's, but I don't really use my computer as a fashion accessory. Is OSX really worth like $1000? Seriously Apple, I have purchased Macs for the last 20 years, but I simply cannot justify buying any of the machines that you have out right now. They are overpriced, outdated pieces of garbage (although very nicely presented and well put together pieces of garbage w/ a better operating system).

Here is a perfect example of why some people should not be allowed on the interweb :p

And for anyone who wanted a mini ... go get the Dell Studio Hybrid.

For the same price (£449) you get:

2.0ghz C2D Processor (same as mini)
4gb Ram (vs 1gb in mini)
320gb hdd (vs 120gb in mini)
Intel 3100 graphics (okay not as good as the mini but both integrated)
7.1 Surround (vs 2 channel mini)

Was tempted before, thought Apple would push me away from making that purchase, not towards it! lol.

Apple certainly hasn't grasped the concept of consumer purchasing in a recession. You would certainly think with so much money in the bank (depending on where that is invested of course) they would be in the best position to lower prices?

Well I for one just purchased a previous-gen refurbished 24" imac for $1199.

There are some tradeoffs with the new version, but not enough to justify the difference in price.

New: 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo
Old: 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo
advantage: old

New: 4GB DDR3
Old: 2GB DDR2
advantage: new, but DDR2 is so cheap now, the 4GB upgrade is no problem.

New: 640GB HD
Old: 320GB HD
advantage: new

New: Nvidia 9400m integrated graphics
Old: ATI HD 2600 pro discrete graphics
advantage: old

New: $1499
Old: $1199
advantage: old

I'm a happy camper.

I have agree on this... :S

Terrible update

This is a terrible update for the iMac, which is by far Apple's largest consumer computer base.

I was hoping that Apple would give me a reason to upgrade my 2.5 year old iMac 24" along with Snow Leopard, iLife & iWork 09. But this is just plain disappointing. This is nothing more than a minor speed bump. The performance upgrade does not justify the price for anyone who has purchased an iMac in the last few years.

In this time of economic turmoil, consumer's need a compelling reason to upgrade. This is not it.

When you will be able to buy a Windows 7 desktop machine for £400 that makes the Mac Mini look like a toy, or for £600 with free 24" monitor, etc, then people won't even look at the Apple offerings.

I think the Mac Mini as it is now is a decent specification mostly. It's a decent design. But the price is horrendously wrong, and Apple are thinking that they'll make nice juicy 80% margins or something from all the cheap components. 120GB HD, lol, my £200 netbook had that, and that has a keyboard, trackpad and screen as well.

i think the problem is that compared to 10 years ago the average price of a desktop sold has dropped by nearly 50% while apples main desktop iMac has more or less stayed the same price

heck the basic mac mini has 1 GB of ram for 599 euro ... the PC i built in mid 2002 had that (and a 80GB HDD .. which was the mini until yesterday) ... _7 years ago_ and it did cost me 650 euro

and another annoyance with apple:
1 year warranty as standard  for a premium price that's insulting

I'm beginning to wonder if Steve saw this coming and just didn't want to stick around for it. This update is disappointing at best.

Apple's business model worked during the boom, but it would have been much more prudent of them to explore a new strategy in this economy...

2009 may just be the year of the Hackintosh.

I agree. But now they have also completely lost sight of the competition too. They have opted for a low quality high price strategy. This is suicidal in boom times let alone this economic depression. I think the writing was on the wall when they chose to ditch firewire from macbooks (ironically still on mac minis :D).

I will be looking into hackintosh now, probably for after SL gets released. Any decent forums/ guides on this? Is there one on macrumors?

I don't see 7.1 surround listed in the specs for the hybrid. It does have optical out but so does the mini.

I think the prices are ridiculous. There's no reason to charge so much and even though it's so expensive, they will still get the sales. They know they can get away with it.

I'm from the UK, and i'd also like to say how annoyed I am at Apple.

When the exchange rate was massively in our favour, Apple did not reduce prices - they were still more expensive than the US. Now, they're not so rosy, the price rockets up.

I was waiting for a low end iMac with a better GPU - I thought there would be no way they'd stick a 9400M in - at least a 9600M.

Instead they release a £950(!) computer with an integrated underpowered 9400M graphics card... they must be joking!

I was going to drive over to the Apple store from work tonight and check them out (if they were instore), instead, i'm going to look at another manufacturer and see if it's viable to switch back to PC.

I believe that OS X is the best operating system out there, but I've found myself priced out of the market.

They better start lowering the price before Windows 7 comes out in-order to compete.

Windows 7 plus cheap new PCs look good to me!

I've been playing with the Windows 7 beta and it is a really good OS. I don't think they are, but Apple should be a little worried. Granted Windows 7 doesn't offer anything new that hasn't been available in OS X for years, but then again Snow Leopard doesn't seem to be adding anything new either.

Um, what about the included mini-DVI -> DVI adaptor?

The mini-DVI port only supports a display up to 1920 x 1200.

To drive a 30" monitor with a resolution of 2560 x 1600, you need to use the Mini DisplayPort. And, currently the only way to do this is to use the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter which is having a lot of problems.

If there was a Mini DisplayPort to regular DisplayPort adapter, this would solve the problem of using newer non-Apple monitors with the standard version of DisplayPort.

What a bummer.

With a combination of one firewire port and a graphics card that doesn't support Final Cut Pro, I wound up buying a discontinued model (for a big discount though.)

The 2.66 models of 20" and 24" iMacs won't support FCP graphically and I don't $1800 for the next one. Sheesh.

Why do you say the new iMac's won't support FCP? The nVidia is a better card than my nVidia 8800GT and it works fine with FCP.

mac mini upgrade??????

This hardly an update! I've had mine since the last upgrade in Aug07 and the spec upgrade is nothing!!

OLD- 1.83
1gb 667

New-
2.0
1 gb 1066

I'm using the mac mini strictly to run both my apple tv's!! How can this be considered an update! Very disappointed!! I thought last night I would be making a trip to the apple store today!

Sadly, the logic board of my Mac mini died.

I was thinking of buying a new Mac mini, but it is so expensive here in EU, that i have only one option: going back to PC.

Now i only need to make a crossgrade license to my Adobe CS3...

No wonder it was missed off Jan's MacWorld

Im sorry but these updates are pathetic. Most of them people could do themselves, HD and RAM updates. Those CPUs should be quad core at the minimum!!

Very disappointed in this, not sure whatelse to say really. ANd whats with the price tag? Do they think we live in healthy economy or something, Jesus theres no way im paying £1,799.00 for the top range imac. ANd im not settling for second best so i think ill stay on my PC for a bit longer. It does NOT cost £800 for 8gig of memory upgrade neither!

I dont know why people get excited about the new graphics card anyway and apple certianly shouldnt say 'all the speed and power you need for the latest 3D games' What games? Oh yeah SImcity3000 and WOW. Whooopie doooo.

I guess a upgrade is better than none (i.e. people need better tech for their money these days), just very very disappointing, i hope they pull a rabbit out of the hat soon!!

And to all the people who said the pic was fake, ha ha ha ha ha ha!:D

Stoked on the iMac!!

Seems like there are a lot of disappointed people out there, I'm NOT one of them. I just purchased the high end iMac and can't wait for it to arrive. I'll be upgrading from my G4 125Ghz desklamp with 1GB of Ram. I'm pretty sure it will be a noticeable upgrade!!!

The high end iMac is quite a bit cheaper than yesterday's high end and you do get a memory, graphics and storage bump.

Very Happy!

Nice Job :apple: !

Can someone tell me if the new integrated NVIDIA graphics for the 20"/24" iMacs is better or worse than the ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO that was in the previous top of the line 20" iMac?

No LED backlight for iMac Display?

Looks like the LED backlight was left out of this product. A trip to the Apple Store did not yield any information.

I was considering upgrading a 2006 iMac, but not to one with a fluorescent backlight display. :(

Now THAT'S an upgrade!

it's ridiculous that the Mac mini is not $499.

too bad that the rumor of $100 price drop to what it was originally turned out to not be true.

might have been tempted to pick one up otherwise. not now.

Has anyone else noticed that the low-end Mac Mini only has 128MB graphics memory available whereas the high-end has 256.

What do you all make of this?

I was gonna buy the low end and upgrade the harddrive and memory myself, but i don't wanna be crippled with smaller graphics mem.

I'm guessing and hoping that it is some sort of firmware based setting where if there is only 1GB of available memory then it sets the graphics size to 128MB, but if you whack up the memory yourself to 2GB plus, then it will allocate 256MB?

What do you reckon?

If this is not the case and the low end does indeed only have 128MB available no matter what then this is gonna suck very majorly!

Also i would like to agree with the rest of the UK users...prices over here are ridiculous!

I noticed too, got the bigger model anyway. dont mind the price, i had waited long enough.

BTW, all you UK peeps, ShutUP!!
THIS IS APPLE FOR GOD SAKES.
IF U DONT LIKE THE PRICE MOVE TO THE USA!!!!!
USA!
USA!
USA!!!!

I would also like to know this. I'm thinking about buying my first imac and I'm not trolling or anything, I just really would like to know why people think the prices are too high. The reason I ask is because I have been looking for a couple weeks and the 24" imac in the low range was 1699 I think, and now it's 1499. That's a price decrease, albeit for the same hardware other than a memory upgrade. I totally understand the people who are let down though.

I did some brief research before buying the refurb with the 2600 and the general consensus was that the 2600 would be a step up from the integrated 9400M.
