Nothing new design wise, that's odd.

no its not.
if they were planning a re-design of anything, they would have held a keynote about it.

for "under-the-hood" changes like these, its not unlike apple to just pull them out overnight.

They better start lowering the price before Windows 7 comes out in-order to compete.

Windows 7 plus cheap new PCs look good to me!

Spec wise, the only upgrade I see is the faster ram (800 vs 1066) and the ATI 4850 option

Then why do people ask why we always complain?

I bought the 3.06 imac in the last revision, whacked in 4GB RAM, 1TB and the 8800 GS, which some sites reckon is the same as the GT 130 and it was £1695. £104 cheaper than this one and as far as I can see I am only not getting the DDR3. Is this right???

If so then I don't really see how it's an upgrade at all.

What I don't get is

why can't they make an iMac that is graphic, HD, and processor upgradable?

This will safe me from trying to sell my current iMac so I can by the new and improved ones....(sigh)

Why is apple pushing for the LED Display "The first display made precisely for the macbook" - to be used with desktops such as the mini??

Will they release a 24" without the ability to charge a laptop?

New member here at MacRumors, though I've been visiting for years.

I've been waiting for a new Mac Mini patiently. I currently have a number of Macs, but my main computer is a 17" MacBook Pro paired with a 30" Dell.

So, this morning when I saw the new Mac Mini, I promptly bought it online. Then, a few minutes later when I realized that there was no easy way to hook-up the 30" Dell by DisplayPort, and instead have to go through a $100 adapter to go from Mini DisplayPort to Dual-link DVI (that doesn't even work properly), I cancelled the order.

Can't Apple or someone make a simple Mini DisplayPort to regular DisplayPort adapter or cable? Must Apple always create their own proprietary formats and screw things up?

Just needed to vent.

Um, what about the included mini-DVI -> DVI adaptor?

What about March 24?

So, does all of this mean the rumored March 24th "event" is off, or do we still think there's more coming at the end of the month?

What a bummer.

With a combination of one firewire port and a graphics card that doesn't support Final Cut Pro, I wound up buying a discontinued model (for a big discount though.)

The 2.66 models of 20" and 24" iMacs won't support FCP graphically and I don't $1800 for the next one. Sheesh.

You sure the new iMac won't support FCP/FCE? That doesn't seem to make sense. Please explain as I am in the market. I might buy a refurb. one then.

I am going to order a new mini asap. Nice specs and coupled with an Elgato tuner stick, its goodbye time for the Windows Media Center PC.

While the new NVIDIA chipset will help with BluRay a bit, the 2.0 CPU may not have the power to do it flawlessly - I'd wait and see how it tests.

But dumping MCE? What are you planning to use on the MacOS side, which would do stuff like BluRay, AVCHD, or has plugins for stuff like netflix? Or it has extenders?

I use Macs for everything else, but for Home Theater Apple is a few years behind. I replaced my Mac Mini (running Vista Media Center) with an AOPEN and haven't looked back: http://usa.aopen.com/products_detail.aspx?ctgr=74&Auno=2878&mdstl=309

When consumers have to restrict their budgets and choose two from:

* Specifications
* Price
* Design

I'm afraid that for many, Design loses out. I.e., they'll sacrifice a smaller form factor or a prettier fascia.

When you will be able to buy a Windows 7 desktop machine for £400 that makes the Mac Mini look like a toy, or for £600 with free 24" monitor, etc, then people won't even look at the Apple offerings.

I think the Mac Mini as it is now is a decent specification mostly. It's a decent design. But the price is horrendously wrong, and Apple are thinking that they'll make nice juicy 80% margins or something from all the cheap components. 120GB HD, lol, my £200 netbook had that, and that has a keyboard, trackpad and screen as well.

Everything is more expensive in the UK - even when the exchange rate was more favorable. You folks need to get on the Euro...

Here is a perfect example of why some people should not be allowed on the interweb :p

And for anyone who wanted a mini ... go get the Dell Studio Hybrid.

For the same price (£449) you get:

2.0ghz C2D Processor (same as mini)
4gb Ram (vs 1gb in mini)
320gb hdd (vs 120gb in mini)
Intel 3100 graphics (okay not as good as the mini but both integrated)
7.1 Surround (vs 2 channel mini)

Apple, what were you thinking? Integrated graphics in an iMac? I thought you were above that now...

Even if I was in the market for an iMac, there's no way I can recommend these Macs to myself or others. :(

I think the prices are ridiculous. There's no reason to charge so much and even though it's so expensive, they will still get the sales. They know they can get away with it.

Well I for one just purchased a previous-gen refurbished 24" imac for $1199.

There are some tradeoffs with the new version, but not enough to justify the difference in price.

New: 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo
Old: 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo
advantage: old

New: 4GB DDR3
Old: 2GB DDR2
advantage: new, but DDR2 is so cheap now, the 4GB upgrade is no problem.

New: 640GB HD
Old: 320GB HD
advantage: new

New: Nvidia 9400m integrated graphics
Old: ATI HD 2600 pro discrete graphics
advantage: old

New: $1499
Old: $1199
advantage: old

I'm a happy camper.

^ and why would you recommend it to yourself? :D anyway, I agree with what you're trying to say :p

The price is a bit more taunting than I expected. I may need to wait till Snow Leopard to purchase my new iMac. Just don't wanna spend an extra $100 on the new system in like a few months. (Hope it's June...) And I don't understand the entry level machine and the first 24'', it's not too much difference except for a few more memories and storage. The education price in Canada even says that: the first 24'' is $120 less than the regular, while the entry level is only $50 down and others are $100 less...

The hard drive should be upgradeable, although probably not as easy as the G5 models.

As for the other stuff, well, it's not a tower. iMacs are made to take up little room, not be upgradeable. You're hitting on a different issue, which is "why doesn't Apple make a mid-tower design in the $1,000s that can be upgraded?" I will agree with you on that because that could entice a lot of ubernerds who love to upgrade stuff. However, Apple's best sellers are the MacBooks, which aren't upgradeable. Therefore, I think they don't see much of a point in making such a line.

I think I would buy an old refurbished 24" 2.8GHZ iMac... But my question is... what about OpenCL and ATi 2600? That's the problema. What exactly is OpenCL? What would it improve?
