Disappointed..... but totally expected. I'm pretty sure i've bought my last Mac desktop. I really wish I didn't have to say that.

Fair price ?

Hells. Yes. But the 12-core is darn expensive.

I tried to create what I believe is a comparable setup over at Dell and the price comes to $6,400. So maybe $5,000 is a deal after all.

* 1TB drive
* 3GB memory
* Dual 6-core @ 2.93 Ghz

I have no idea what the equivalent video card is for a 5770.

sad

Why are there so many dumb ass people posting these days? **** about case designs as being a deal breaker. No USB 3? No FW 1600? Buy a ****ing expansion card.

Your comparing consumer products with pro products.

It's a brilliant design, we have old G5s and Intel plus a couple of mirror front G4s in this studio. The cheese grater is brilliant especially the last two versions. Swapping drives, moving them out on location, they are easy to use and manage.

I think you may be bored with looking at them but for people who use them the design works well.

I do use them and it might have been "brilliant" 7 years ago, it's not now. It's heavy, restrictive, cumbersome and stilted with limited motherboard expansion.

As for comparing consumer and pro lines ... one clearly gets Apple's attention and the other doesn't and in the professional's case they are the ones who want to see cutting edge hardware and innovation because they are the ones who use it.

CompactFlash? SD? It's pathetic that you still have to use USB to transfer images from a camera when a Mac Mini and iMac has a slot for it.

More pathetic is that based on past announcements this refresh is going to be the only one the Pro gets this year and will have to carry the line to next summer.

A couple quick questions for you smart people :)

1) What kind of user would benefit from the 12-core over the 6-core? Does the OS handle multithreading well enough now that pretty much everyone would notice a difference?

2) If I bought one of these, could I just swap its system drive with the one in my 2006 Mac Pro and go? (I've had a terrible time with Migration Assistant missing things).

Thanks!

Modest? You mean:

1.) Faster processor [2.4 GHz vs 2.26 GHz].
2.) Faster video card [1GB vs 512MB].
3.) Built-in AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi [no longer a $50,00 BTO option].
4.) A new power supply [required for the new video cards].

That to me is well worth the $200

ehmm... didn't the price of the other components drop in the meantime?

Is the Hackintosh still a better option?

Trying to decide whether to build a Hackintosh or wait until August for the Mac Pro to be available. Right now, we can build a Hackintosh with higher performance and at a lower cost than the just announced Mac Pro. Am I right?
I think that with the Hackintosh, we can at least put more memory and Nvidia card(s) in it. The single-processor Mac Pro systems can only take up to 16GB.

"Oh, still want a tower? Yeah? Fine. Here you go, *******. It's 7 years old and we want a trillion dollars for it in compensation for having to keep making more of these things. Do you get the message now?"

I think I sadly have to agreed.
While the case is fine for what it is, the extremely long wait of redesigning it is a sign that Apple is not moving or moving at snail speed when it comes to the Pro line, there is just not much interest there.
Another reflection of that is the ACD upgrades. The 30" display still the same and no upgrades.
I think is official, Apple is now all about iPhones and iPads. The Mac now is a distant third. :(

Is there a single 6 core option and if so, what's the price?

FWIW, I was hoping for USB3 also. :(

thanks

:(

I was hoping for:

- $2499: 2x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core / 12 GB RAM / 500 GB Seagate Momentus XT
- $3499: 2x 2.66 GHz Hexa-Core / 12 GB RAM / 500 GB Seagate Momentus XT

How does the eight-core model's modest upgrade justify the price increase?

It doesn't.

Does the 6 core have 8 banks for memory?

Nope, looks like it's an upgrade to the quad so four ram slots.

If that's not modest I don't know what is. Those are the kinds of things that you expect an upgrade to deliver at the same price. Since technology prices tend to drop over time.

I work in 3D and was hoping that the new MacPros would be something worth waiting for. If this is Steveo's version of "Amazing" I'm pretty darn disappointed. Win7 is looking better and better.
I use a Boxx 8400 w/ Windows 7 for Maya. But thats as far as Ill go with Windows. We have over 2 dozen Mac Pro's here that do all Graphics/Motion/NLE/DAW work.
Looking forward to 12-cores ;)

The OS doesn't matter as much as the apps used, and there are definitely some that can use as many cores as you have.

I wouldn't swap system drives.

Exactly. You can build an i7 machine with 6 ram slots, top of the line components for about a grand. And it will blow the doors off the base mac "pro".

Same here. The improvements over previous models don't justify the price bump, considering it has been one and half year gap.

I'll have to check the price of the 6-core before switching to Windows though.
