Just fyi, the pre-orders are now up on Costco's site if you want to go that way. $50 off the listed price (example, 15 inch M4 16g/256g is $1149).

Guess I will be returning my M3 one I just bought for $1099. $50 for upgraded chip, extra monitor support and likely an extra year of support on the back end seems like a no brainer.

Now what color ... only downside is giving up the Space Grey I kinda like.

You actually can get 32 with the base pro.

Not when I checked, it was greyed out. EuroBoy here, so perhaps it changes according to availability/production. But 32GB was cheaper on the Air it was I deluding myself?

Ok, plot thickens. Costco lowered the M3 versions down $100 (e.g., the M3 16g/256g 15 inch is now $999). I can get a price adjustment online and not sure it's worth the time and $150 to upgrade to the M4. I don't use the camera much and while the extra display support would be nice, I don't use it right now and overall my uses are pretty basic.

Space gray is great for not distorting one's color perception. Colored laptops will distort one's color perception, which is probably why Apple has generally avoided color in laptops. But color sells, hence the IMO nice looking blue.

I have M4 MacBook Pro... it makes my house cooler instead of hotter !! 🤯
Than why are dogging this years M4 air (among other releases) This is just the usual evolution of Apple products. I have M4 pro in the 16” and while I love it my use now needs to include a portable, and light weight computer, the M4 air in 13” is perfect. I can afford both so not getting rid of my pro.

1% of people (or even less) can afford both a 16 inch MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air M4

I think 1% is pretty extreme, in. The USA I would say more like 20-30%. Worldwide probably lowers the percentage quite a bit.
I mean 1% of all the world population… I wonder if people who are buying tho MacBooks should give this money to people who might need it like poor people or donations for kids who needs help !

Incredible so many people are buying it… I guess there still many users on Intel.
I placed my order today and have the same date. No people know a good value with good performance. You for some reason sour on this past weeks releases and haven’t explained to anyone why. I waited weeks for this release and am total glad I did. This is a much better machine and value than the M3 version. For the same price as the base M3 I got the M4 with 512 ssd, and for a measly 200. I got 24 gigs of ram.

If you don’t know why I am not very happy about the release of the M4 MacBook Air… Well here is why : since the m2 MacBook Air release, we didn’t had other new things than better performances, dual external screen support (which I don’t even have one) and the new 12mp camera…

Honestly I was expecting more innovation after almost 3 years.

The innovation was M1 now you
Will see incremental improvements. M5 will most likely be incremental as well. I don’t see any mfg. doing anything ground breaking I think for now the industry is at the point where computers are fully mature and changes that are groundbreaking are going to be far and few. When AI starts to mature I think there will be more groundbreaking apps for computers, but I don’t see anytime soon physical changes that make a computer any more amazing than they currently are.

Everyone complains about the component upgrade costs. 1) You don't need memory on a mac like you do windows, what are people using an air for that needs more than 16GB? 2) Go price a similarly specced Thinkpad x1 and get back to me.

I also feel like the pricing gets conflated because apple silicon ram is used as both ram and graphics card ram. This means that from a pricing perspective, yes, Apple’s prices are expensive when used as just ram, and possibly quite undercosted if compared to other more pricey graphics cards.

But it’s also likely a phenomenon that affects the pro Macs more, as these are the ones subject to more demanding workflows. If you are a student working primarily with office docs and web apps, not so much.

Why are you concerned about the innovation of the MBA when you actively use an MBP?

You don’t understand how Apple rolls. What they are doing is totally within how they handle upgrades. They can do it since they have millions of people ready to buy, including me. I hate how Apple does business, but they have good products. I was a window nerd for over 35 years and finally got tired of the substandard hardware and software. I was an absolute hater of all things Apple. But the breaking point for me was the lack of my phone and computer being a happy working eco system. After getting an iPhone and Mac I am stunned that I delt with such garbage for so long. I had to swallow my pride and bite the bullet that even though apple business practices suck they have an eco system that is so much more pleasant to work with.

Because if we were getting more features in the M3 for example then I would have waited M4 mba and then if M4 also have more features I could have bought the MacBook Air m4 instead of a MacBook Pro… But nope since there was no big features I just got the MacBook Pro to get a good upgrade from MacBook Air m1.

Here is my guess : apple need to innovate by including even more features than the m4 in 2025 and they will be ok. Otherwise I would recommend a refurbished M4 MacBook Pro for sure !

wondering if this mba m4 will be the same as the other m4 macs as far as the nand ssd is concerned. Do they do the same two 128 ssd or go back to the m2 with the 1 256. That would kill it for me. Just dont see how theyd do that if other m4 macs got two but the lower price is the concern with this

I doubt they will do that, Apple received a lot of blowback when they did that on the M2 I believe. We won’t know until we see our first reviews with testing. Yea it is a concern with the cheaper price.

Most of us aren't color-correcting images or video so it probably wouldn't hurt to give some of us a little color in our computer choices. Not sure why Apple is so afraid of color even while they talk about color so much.

Why expect that? Most of the time, a new design of laptop comes out, remains mostly unchanged other than internal specs and has little to no visual changes until it is time for the next redesign. Redesigns are when expensive new components cause the price to go up. Keeping designs stable for a few iterations lets Apple keep the prices stable even with some level of inflation.

I always recommend waiting for a refurbished model. However, checking the M4 MacBook Air vs my refurbished M1 MacBook Air, the new one with a similar configuration was only US$50 more.

Apple isn't going to do something really interesting. They tried that with Touch Bar and that didn't please many people. Besides, they're spending most of their development money on chip development.
