I doubt it. I am guessing soldered storage is the way forward for all Macs. The T2 chip may also mean the Hackintosh culture needs to find a way around it.

The single biggest problem for ALL Macs is the storage. There is simply no way to replace the storage WHEN it fails. This makes these computers disposable appliances, and these prices are simply too expensive for computers which should be easy to repair [but which will need to be thrown out when the storage fails--How environmentally friendly is this strategy?].

I also don't understand Apple's choice of iGPU. Why not include the Intel CPU + AMD Vega chipset? Or better yet, go with the less expensive AMD Ryzen and Vega combination (unless it has to do with TDP or lack of TB3 compatibility)?

Nice package, lots of ports, great options, and well-priced. Like that there's a 10G ethernet option.

This will be my next Indigo-based home automation computer.

They are at least decent enough to warn people that this computer has a T2 spy processor that make it non functional for music production. since it totally destroys real time processing.

Oh! I didn’t know Thunderbolt 3 == USB-C. That’s nice! Why do companies do this terminology dance, it only confuses consumers, stick to one name dammit!
It’s not directly interchangeable. Thunderbolt 3 uses the usb-type c connector but an advanced protocol with thunderbolt which contains usb and more. Never assume a usb-c is a thunderbolt 3.

It’s two very different things that use the same connector and thunderbolt has usb protocols ‘baked in’ if you will.

$999 Canadian for the base model, $1399 CA for the better one, nice that you can upgrade both models to 10 Gig Ethernet

Interesting that they felt they had to market the T2 chip on these as being able to encode h265 faster, seems most coverage of the T2 has been the errors it causes and how it makes it impossible to recover your data.

$4,199 for the Maxed out mini! While I'm hopeful that the ram will be upgraded via third party ram (read $1,000 less!), the fact is the SSD is Apple proprietary and so either you upgrade when you order or your pretty stuck until used minis start showing up on eBay.

Unfortunately, I feel Apple is losing touch with reality and that Tim Cook has surrounded himself with rich "yes" people, as the mini was originally made so the "poor" could afford a entry level computer, today that stopped as $800 is not affordable compared to entry level PC's, this logic also applies to iPads. Apple needs to introduce a sub-$500 entry level computer that would allow the masses to embrace. Ie, the mini default ram should be 16 and 8 for a true entry level $499 (today's offer is an insult to anyone with any computer knowledge!!)

Long Live Steve Job and I hope he visits Tim Cook in his dreams to wake Tim up to the masses that need better access... (Tim, this is why Android is still around, offer an actual affordable, true lowend product for the poor!!)

How is this even targeted to Pro users when it uses integrated graphics???
A dGPU would have been for me something to get excited for...
Not even a dGPU. I was hoping for at least Iris Plus graphics like in rMBP (which is still 10-20% slower than Intel GPU from my 500$ Intel NUC from 2016), but 630 UHD is a joke. It's over 60% slower than my Skull Canyon which I consider bare minimum.

All good... Will probably get a mini for server use and a few iPads.

Still waiting for the Mac Pro - would like to buy a few so we can write them off. Haven't bought a Mac Pro in 4 years. Typically buy one or two every year. At least some of the announced machines are useful for content creators.

Anyone have any guesses whether you can order the new MacMini with 8gb and then add another 16gb so-dimm from Crucial for 24gb?

Sadly I see only USB-A so maybe Apple will hear my please add USB-C or some developer have an app that will make my dream set up happened. I love the new iPad Pro and I would love it even better if I can connect it to the new Mac Mini through that connection port or wirelessly over WiFi so I can get a little bit of Mac on my iPad Pro as an output or Mac interface when I need it. I use iOS more than I use my MacBook so a Mac Mini would be ideal with iPad Pro.

Those complaining about price bump what are you comparing this to? A dual core 5400rpm 500gb model? Right now a refurb 1TB fusion dual core is $849. Then the “I can build a PC for X”, great have a cookie. Very few care here, the name of the website should be your first clue. This is the price of admission to the Apple eco-system, been that way since the beginning. Do please continue however, it’s very entertaining to read.

Wow, they threw us a bone and updated the specs. Looks nice, if years late.

Anybody else get the feeling Apple is basically phoning it in with Macs at this point? They took one last big swing with that trash can Pro and then when that didn't work out they said "screw it, we'll just update the internals every once in a while and maybe make the outside a darker gray". It's fine, but it's also a little sad. All the really eye-popping stuff today was iPad-related.

At this point, it looks like they'll keep beefing up the iOS hardware and software until it overtakes the Mac entirely.
