Apple and overseas suppliers are ramping up production of three new Mac laptops with Apple processors: new 13-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros and a new 13-inch MacBook Air, according to people familiar with the matter. Beyond the processor switch, the devices won’t have significant design changes.

I really want one but if the devices don't have the design changes not sure I'll bite. I've been hoping the bezels on the screens get smaller. It will have the better keyboard at least (and my current MacBook has had its 4th keyboard replacement...) so that might be enough based on some other things but was hoping for some design improvements.

I woke up thinking the event was tomorrow. Need to wait another week.

Should call these the ASS Macs. Apple Speedy Silicon.

If there isn't a BIG difference in the key issues, why would Apple make this move? A little more battery life is worth it? Not being quite as fast? Using the same industrial design? It seems like those results wouldn't make the effort worthwhile at all...
There are several other benefits of the ARM-based Macs besides the usual longer battery or faster processors. Thermal efficiency hasn't been Apple's strong point. I would love for all Mac notebooks not to require fans. Better security. Wifi6e. Instant boot up. The ability to have powerful graphics that don't weigh heavy on system resources.

Apple today announced a third fall 2020 event, which is set to be held on Tuesday, November 10 at 10:00 a.m. on the Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California. As with the September and October events that saw the debut of new Apple Watches, iPhones, and other products, the November event will be digital only, with Apple likely providing pre-taped segments for each new product that will be announced.

Apple has already announced a new fourth-generation iPad Air, eighth-generation iPad, Apple Watch Series 6, and iPhone 12 lineup, the November event is expected to be a Mac-centric event with Apple introducing the first Apple Silicon Mac. We've got a quick overview of what to expect below.

Apple Silicon Mac

Apple has promised the first Apple Silicon Mac with an Arm-based chip is coming before the end of 2020, and it looks like the November event will be all about Apple Silicon Macs.

applesiliconbenefits.jpg

Apple first announced its work on Apple Silicon chips back in June, and we've heard little since then. Apple Silicon chips are similar to the A-series chips used in Apple's iPhones and iPads, with the chips designed in-house by Apple and manufactured by TSMC.

Apple Silicon chips will bring improved performance and more efficient Macs that have a deeper integration between hardware and software, allowing for things like universal apps that run on all Apple devices.

There's no clear word yet on which Mac will be the first to get an Apple Silicon chip, but rumors suggest Apple is working on a new MacBook Air or a revived 12-inch MacBook, so the lower-cost MacBook line could see an update first. There are also rumors of a new 14-inch MacBook and a 24-inch iMac, so these are possible candidates as well.

We could get just a single Mac or multiple Macs could be refreshed with Apple Silicon at the same time.

Other Possibilities

This event will likely be held primarily to introduce the first Apple Silicon Mac (or Macs), but there are still some other products that are on the horizon that could see a launch at the November event.

AirPods Studio

Apple is developing high-end over-ear headphones that are a part of the AirPods family, offering an over-ear alternative to the AirPods and the AirPods Pro. Rumors suggest the AirPods Studio will cost $349 and will offer Active Noise Cancellation and a retro-style design.

Rumors initially suggested AirPods Studio would launch before the end of the year, but Bloomberg recently said there have been development issues, so it's now unclear if we're still on track to get them in 2020.

AirTags

AirTags are Apple's long-rumored Bluetooth trackers that can attach to items like wallets and keys, letting them be tracked right in the Find My app alongside iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

We've been expecting AirTags for quite some time now and we could finally see them in November, but there's also a chance that Apple is holding off until next year.

Event Coverage

Apple plans to stream the Mac event live on its Events website, on YouTube, and on the Apple TV app when it kicks off at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time. For those unable to watch, MacRumors will be providing full event coverage both on MacRumors.com and through the MacRumorsLive Twitter account.

AR Event Accompaniment

As with Apple's prior two events, Apple has created an augmented reality teaser for the Apple event, which can be viewed by visiting the event page on an iOS device. This month's event features a black Apple logo that opens and closes like a MacBook with a glowing rainbow background.

Eh...what happen to November 17....(cough)...

Hopefully this is the event worth watching. The others have been snooze fests, but with Apple Silicon and hopefully a new goodie like Tags or Studio headphones, it’ll be great!

The same reason people are disappointed in the GB and Antutu scores of the A14 over the A13. So what you are saying is that the iPhone should have modest gains year to year rather than be flagship and revolutionary? Also, should the Pro Series have the same processor as the 12 and 12 Mini? The mindset of Apple with a Pro Series phone is to go all out and not make it marginally better than a non-flagship phone. Set the bar high as nothing can reach it and make it incrementally better each year. That's what a Pro product should be about.

I'm saying that anything other than incremental gains would be pointless and would only serve "my phone's faster than yours" bragging rights. As soon as a desktop processor started performing at speeds above what the A14 could already do battery life would plummet and the thing would just overheat unless you had some form of active cooling. But I still don't see any envisioned use for such a device - what "pro" user would be doing work that required that kind of processing power on a device with a 6" screen and no keyboard?

This will be big.
I'm waiting for the 16" refresh as my 2014 machine, while still flying quickly and running nicely, is due an update. I'd take the Apple chip if it were an option.

The whole event is an encore event. I haven't seen apple do 3 consecutive events...
That's because marketing loves bloat, and Apple is all about marketing and gimmicks on top of tired product iterations right now. If Jobs were alive in 2020 we would be on to the next great thing already. Cook is a subscription pennythrifter who belongs in the marketing department. :(

The usual "we expect" %$#@ again. It's just pure arrogance.
Only Apple themselves can confirm or deny anything. The rest is just the rumour mill.

The bigger question is, what will the second product be.
Apple Watch and iPad
Homepod Mini and iPhone

Rumoured to be ASi Macs and . . . what else??
Anyone have any ideas on what they think this something else could be?

Apple Glass. There, I've said it.... again.

One is a man made synthetic material and the other is derived naturally from the Earth itself.
The atoms used to make both silicone and silicon based substances/products are all natural.

(How can anyone pretend that there is anything even slightly natural about silicon that has been collected, even as silicon dioxide sand, melted, refined, doped, etched, attached to metal and plastics, packaged in plastics, and then had half the electrical power of the world passed through it. OK, that was an exaggeration.)

Don’t need tags or headphones. Good on laptops for 5-7 yrs. Hopefully AS will be worthwhile then.

Glad I planned to skip a year or two with iPhone purchases and focus on replacing my ‘15 15” MacBook Pro. Been a great machine that will stay in the family, but I am ready for an upgrade since I do so much more 4K work these days.
