The millionth member got a free game of pong.

But seriously, I noticed the "playlists" that you can create in itunes do not show up in a ping profile. Wouldn't it make sense to add that to the networking service?

Dude you are twisting data for your own political agenda. A million users in a single day (maybe two) after a fresh launch is incredibility awesome. I want to see the numbers after this three day weekend. Then this time next month.

IMO, the HMS Facebook "The Unsinkable" has just hit the iceburg. Time to rearrange the seating on the deck and start up the band!

I wonder how many of those one million users have elected to turn Ping off once they have tried it. I'm sure allot of those one million users were just too curious and had to try it and were disappointed.

I'm happy for Apple but I see no need for a social network on iTunes. I just want to continue using it to sync my iPods/iPhones and for watching my TV shows and movies. I don't care for no Lady Gaga or the recommendations others in this thread are mentioning that iTunes is recommending. Ping would never have recommendations for what I listen to. I've gone back to the previous iTunes version.

Hey, it's the 21st century. It's ok to be gay or whatever.
Thanks, I know what century it is. You'd admit you watch gay porn to your aunts, uncles, grandparents, acquaintances, etc.? Thought not. Not that liberal yet, eh?

This brings up a good point, but honestly, what would you suggest they should have named it?

Something appropriate, like "CRAP" or "SH IT". Of course, I'm sure there are already bands out there with those names too.

:apple:

P.S. Lady Gaga is neither. And no, this is not referring to the above suggested names for Jobs' latest shell game folly to keep the world from realizing Apple computers ship with, and probably will for the continual future, pathetically obsolete drives.

Uhhhhhhhhhh

Facebook and Ping are two ENTIRELY different types of social network.

Agreed. One succeeded where the other was a dismal failure out of the catching-up box.

We report; you decide.

Sorry if somebody beat me to it...

...but I could hear that logo scream "Please Photoshop Me!!!" :D

There is literally NOTHING to do or interact with, on Ping. I know, I know, it just launched 2 days ago, but it's a barren wasteland with like 20 artists to follow, and no real integration with Facebook, MySpace, etc. They should have worked on it more, let it grow more before they released it.

Um... how can something grow if you don't release it? That's like saying, I wish this farmer had let this watermelon get bigger before he planted the seeds in the ground.

Give it time

Give Ping some time, Apple will get it figured out all this feedback is what they’re waiting for. I’m sure they will look at all this and make improvements where needed. I signed up and so far I like it, however I don’t think I’ll use it all that much as I’m not that crazy about social networks.

Ping - Half Ar$ed?

I agree with the various posts that say there is nothing of much use on Ping (at the moment).

I'm also confused about their recommendations algorithm. How on earth do I get 50cent, Daddy Yankee and Keith Urban as recommendations? My profile has The Clash, Pixies, Psychedelic Furs, Richard Thompson, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Stranglers, The Jam, and Buzcocks. My genres are Alt, Reggae and Singer/Songwriter. Does not compute.

I can only assume that there are sod all bands on there right now. This is not even worthy of a 'Beta' release. Why is there no 'I Utterly Hate These Recommendations, Do Not Darken My Computer With Them Ever Again, err Please Mr Jobs' button?

The navigation is also cak.

what's wrong about ping? c'mon... I'm having fun with it... it's not facebook you know, but is a better way to know if any album is good or not by the people!

Sure it does. You wrongly assume that their recommendations are based on your taste in music. Their recommendations are actually based on the highest bidder : "50 cent just threw 100,000$ our way, submit him as a recommended artist to 250,000 accounts".

Someone didn't know about allmusic.com it seems.

You don't need social networking crap to get album reviews.

Just don't see much benefit in exchange for the potential invasion of privacy, just turned it off. Maybe in a couple years if/when apple decides to get serious instead of another hobby...

I'm still waiting on my user photo to be "processed".

I have last.fm and love it, but this has the potential to grow into something pretty neat over time, I think.

In it's current form, I think Ping is a joke. I think they should have bought last.fm and integrated it's functionality instead of trying to reinvent the wheel.

Oh. Right then. Perhaps I'd better spend some more time in the forums. Most of the threads I follow are ones that originated as front-page stories, not "users with problems."

But now I'm breaking my own rule about off-topic posts, so I'll shut up now.

Ha ha, stay around, you'll see what I mean. For example, here's one right here. The guy started out his post with stuff that had nothing to do with the nature at hand. All he had to do is get to the point. First line in his post is what he was doing when hanging out with his brother and girlfriend which was useless info. Just another forum of giving us his life story that we didn't ask about. LOL.

Apple does not have to compete with Facebook, they just need Ping to drive sales of music on iTunes. That seems to be its goal. Its not a "place to hang out." Its a way of sifting music. Since iTunes is the largest store for online music, Ping can be very successful.

No, it's a way to know if any band or album has enough money behind it to pay rooms full of people to up their ratings.

All success is bought; of course, in order to buy success you have to have tons of cash, and tons of cash sometimes implies prior success.

Not usually, but sometimes.

But depending on any rating system to tell you what is good and what is not would be woefully ignorant. Ditto expecting to find "new" music on iTunes, which turns down at least 98% of all independent submissions irrespective of quality or potential success, just like all other major record labels.

Use your ears and heart and rely on your own judgment and look beyond iTunes; FAR beyond iTunes.

:apple:

P.S. Are they called "albums" again? Not to be rude, but out of curiosity how old are you? Most people who refer to "albums" are in their 60's. The term went out in the 60's when LP took over, and then CD. "Album" conjures up memories of Bing Crosby 6" thick photo album style groups of 6 or so double sided 78 rpm lacquer records. Although I'm so out of touch it could be the current term again.

Just curious.

It wasn't so much a 'wrong assumption', more a hope that something interesting might turn up, as opposed to things which I would rather move home to avoid. Am I being a bit to hopeful?

I have used it once and haven't really been on it again. Am I the only one?

You are not alone. Ping has yet to sign up an artist that interests me, and I have no intention of "following" strangers, based on Ping's recommendation.

Apple launches Ping - A social networking and music recommendation service which subsequently takes over the music industry. [The Oatmeal]
