The real question is how does one remove Ping from the sidebar?

Two ways that I know:

1) Go back to 9.2.1 if you still have a copy on a backup somewhere. This also brightens up iTunes, iTunes 10 seems to have a pretty bland color scheme.

2) Disable the iTunes store in parental settings and the Ping icon will go away. It seems odd that Ping is the only entry that I can't remove by itself somewhere in the preferences.

Maybe not the most ideal options, but that's all I've found so far.

Numbers!

I wonder how many of them never checked back their Ping after signing-up like me?

I really dislike how deeply integrated Ping is to the iTunes Store and how incredibly separated it is from your own music library.

Apple today announced that over one million users have joined Ping
Hmmm....one million people may have joined....but one million users?? I signed up. There's really not a whole lot to "use" there. The only bands you can "follow" are the 20 or so that Apple is featuring. Steve said follow ANY of your favorite bands. I'm not seeing it. I found some band pages, but there's no way to follow them.

I don't buy the one million users number at all. Sign ups, sure. I doubt a million people are actually using it. It's pretty weak.

Can I access ping from my iPhone? If not, why not?

I signed up but can I do anything on my phone?

Ping is cool but has so much unfulfilled potential. The Ping team at Apple really need to explore last.fm a bit more and take a leaf out of their book.

All these negative comments are making me laugh.

C'mon, the service has only been out for two days! Give it some time ... like at least a week. :D

...and the social media cancer grows a little more.

Totally agree with this statement. I know whenever my boss hires someone I have to immediately do the social media look ups to see if this kid will blabber all over the internet companies doings. Kids today have no clue how many times they been passed over because of MySpace, Twitter & The Facebook.

I can't believe my generation (GenX) were ever as stupid as today's kids. I still think Location services are a bad guys best friend.

I don't like how the music that you have in iTunes from your own cd's don't show up. This causes your top 10 to be slanted horribly from who you really like to listen to in iTunes

and there will be about 1,000,000 unused "Ping" accounts after the weekend... seriously though, what good is "Ping" if you can not connect to other social networks and you can't even use applications such as "Address Book" to automatically search and add friends? I registered but lost interest.

Agreed. As long as it does not have any connection to social networks, I render it useless. At this point, I don't even touch it.

I will not join Ping until it uses my nickname and not the name on my credit card. I read it also changes the name on your reviews from your nickname to the one on your credit card. Major fail, Steve! Do you want me to take my credit card off my iTunes account so I can use a faux name to protect my privacy?

You don't actually expect anything that Steve Jobs says to have any truth or actual basis in demonstrable facts behind it, do you?

You've been around too long for that.

Today I was shopping and picked up a chunk of pecorino at the Milk Pail - the label proclaimed in large font "Naturally low in carbohydrates".

Of course - if you're selling a product that's 80% saturated fat you'd point out that it's low carb.

Jobs the salesman is the same....

I have never purchased a song from Apple but have a large library. I see this being problematic.

There is not much to it yet, but it is just getting started.

I would lover better integration with other networks.

If Apple would let people link it too Facebook, Twitter, last.fm, etc. You could really do something with it.

Look, Apple... I don't listen to Lady Gaga or the other dozen artists you signed up for this thing. My music taste is a tad more eclectic than that. I'll check back with Ping in 3 months, or so. Hopefully we'll get some New Age artists, or perhaps some genre sections for calliope/circus organ music, 40s music, and the like. Kinda doubt it, though.

Apple is good at making and selling products, I don't think they really understand non-commercial social activities.

I agree with you but I dont think this Ping thing will go very far.

apple has a bit of a history in being somewhat premature with releases. While not entirely relevant, except for it's ability to "rip burn play" iTunes (the store) had zero content for a looong time. Eventually, Apple refined things...and, today. Well, today speaks for itself.

Apple, having vision, is always focusing on tomorrow..but, they have to start somewhere. As a user of Apple products since 1983, I've enjoyed seeing them develop & refine what works (and dropping what doesn't) over the years.

I think Ping will gain features, and sooner rather than later people won't remember how they lived without it. Remember, Steve made a "major" announcement about Ping. They are going to dump resources into (and already have).

As for not really "staring at what other people are listening to all day" and "nobody doing that" as some other user said, isn't that what facebook boils down to?

I don't mind it but Apple needs to come up with a better way for people who share iTunes accounts, like me and my brother are linked to my dad's credit card and email so he knows whenever we buy things and we can all share through home sharing. Now I think we would have to share a Ping account too, they need a better sharing/multiple accounts on iTunes in general.
