Keep in mind that one thing he does not mention is that Samsung produces something on the order of 10x different models of smart phones vs 3 for Apple. It is obvious to me that Samsung would have a larger share of smart phone market given the larger amount of different phones that they have on the market. It is a Apples to Oranges comparison.
I think the fact that Samsung produces more models is irrelevant by itself. The fact that they hit much lower price points outside the US and in the prepaid market is what gives the comparison a bit of perspective.
I would bet that the iPhone outsells all Android phones on the carriers it is offered at the specific price points it competes at.
In my opinion, Android's primary advantages over the iPhone in market share have nothing to do with the number of models or customization or feature checklists or product cycles. It simply comes down to price, distribution/carrier availability, and manufacturing capacity. As far as I know, there is one carrier where Android does not have any of these advantages (AT&T). And the iPhone completely dominates (60+% of all phones. Not just smartphones.)

If I am not mistaken Samsung did report that they had 9M SGIII in their sales channels.
Nope. They just announced 9 million preorders by carriers. No sales. No shipments.
