Please god let that 8800GT be avaliable as an upgrade kit for the old macpro's.

We will be happy with the optional NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT with 512MB of video memory, or NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 with 1.5GB of video.

Personally, I feel that anyone paying $3,000 to turn a computer into a gaming machine needs to get his or her head checked. Frankly, I also find a MacBook a bit on the expensive side for what I use a computer for, but it is still worth it for the ease of iLife (iMovie, iTunes, and iPhoto are simply the best programs in their class) and my general computing needs (work/internet usage). I am deciding between a MacBook and whatever subnotebook Apple brings to the table next week. A dock (with the integrated monitor) to go along with the subnotebook would just seal the deal.

I do find that Apple skimps on hardware a bit given the extremely low prices offered by PC manufacturers, but se la vie. I love my G4 12" Powerbook, but it is almost time to put it to bed. Looking forward to finally being able to make a decision next week.

Don't forget about the ADC store if you are a college student! It's $100 to enroll and it will save you a ton on a new MacPro.

Current Base Price from ADC: $2,239

Thats a $561.00 Savings!

Wonder how long it will take places like OWC and Crucial to get the new memory....and at what price.

According to Apple, the MacPro is using Harpertown, not Penryn.

http://www.apple.com/macpro/technology/processor.html

"Inside the new Mac Pro is the latest technology from Intel: Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Harpertown” processors. These processors run at blazingly fast speeds up to 3.2GHz."

Type "Harpertown" into Google, and about the second listing is a link to a Wikipedia article which states: "Harpertown is said to be a 45 nm, quad-core processor based on Intel's upcoming Penryn microarchitecture with 12 MiB of L2 cache."

Penryn is the microarchitecture. There are lots of different processors that are Penryns, and one kind is the Harpertown processors for servers.

I wonder when other retailers will start offering 800 mhz FB-DIMMs because I am not buying RAM through Apple. However since the machine comes with 2 GB standard now I will do much better while waiting for the RAM to arrive than I would have before with only 1 GB. This also makes me extremely happy.

Apparently you've never seen the PC gaming market then.

I'd also like to get only the 8800gt for my "old" mac pro.
Hw if they wouldn't offer it as a diy part, and the efi/bios chip is of the same size of the pc version, just get a pc 8800 gt, flash it and enjoy, like I did with the x1900xt.
Like someone posted before, PCIe 2.0 is backward compatible with 1.0 and so this card can run on the existing mpros. (in the pc world I think as today only the intel x38 chipset has one slot 2.0)

I have to say that the new Pro is a big monster, the only thing I miss is a new line of Cinema Displays, but there is still the MacWorld next week to announce them, right?

For 2499 USD, you can get the single quad core 2.8 GHz and the 8800 GT. That's not bad.

My MP was purchased in Aug 2006 and still feels pretty current, despite being the entry level pro -- 2 GHz, 4 GB RAM, 660 GB HDD (total). It's plenty fast -- not that anyone who needs these couldn't use more almost always, but that just makes me write more efficient code, I guess. :)

Is there any indication as to whether or not the single-cpu version will use the same motherboard, leaving one empty socket for future user-upgrade?

My question as well. It's not clear to me how it would work at all with these motherboards.

I don't understand what is going on with Apple lately. They have always had the best design ideas out of any other manufacturer out there, but its about time that they update their Cinema Displays, Mac Pro and Macbook Pro lines.

The new iMac design wasn't really a redesign, they just made it a little thinner, threw in the aluminum casing and black bordered glass screen. Same thing with the iPod Classics, the same thing just different casing, are they out of ideas?

I thought that the Mac Pro would see a new casing update so I guess not.

I am waiting on a MacBook Pro casing update so I can buy one. I TRULY hope that it is updated on Macworld San Francisco. The MacBook Pro's design has been looking dull lately..

The Mac Pro is such an incredible design. For those here who have been building machines for 15+ years, you can appreciate the design features, especially the easy RAM installation and the hard drive installation is stupid-easy. The only thing that might need some change is that I hear the second optical drive installation can be tricky for space and power possibly, and airport + bluetooth were not technically user-installable upgrades aftermarket.

I don't know why so many people complain about there being no new case for the Mac Pro. It's a great design already, there really isn't any need to change it just for the sake of changing it. Surely with a "Pro" machine the emphasis should be (and obviously is) on usability and performance?

The internals of the Pro are terrific. No cables to battle with, so easy to put hard drives and memory in. Until the interfaces and technology itself moves on, what on earth could Apple do to better the way this works?

Agreed :)

I see. So we can rip the rom from that card and stick it on a pc card!
If that happens, I'll be such a happy bunny! :)

It wasn't sarcasm. I am actually happy with what Apple has updated this machine with. I may either buy it when I get home from school today and buy an apple cinema display after MWSF, or I may wait until next week. Either way, I am EXTREMELY happy with the graphics cards. The case is so well designed and a pro machine doesn't need a redesign. This machine will last me a few years at least, and i'm very happy about it. :)

I'm not really sure what people CAN complain about.. although the people complaining are probably the same ones who think the iMac needs a refresh or that the MBPs are obsolete. But I am happy, I just can't wait to see the student pricing.

EDIT: let me just add that I have no need for blu-ray, and i guess if i was expecting it then i would be dissapointed. also i wish the cinema displays were updated NOW so i could buy now but i am sure they will be updated next tuesday and then i can buy and have an awesome machine.

It's not that it's bad. But I can't understand why people feel anything more than relief.

I mean the Mac Pros were nearly TWO YEARS OLD! With the same price tags! That was humiliating!

Nothing really new, just a soooo deeply needed up-to-date.

Price/performance ratio changed. That's it. Moving on.

One quadcore 2.8ghz + 8800GT for $2500. Works for me!

It's a very good price for a single quad core CPU workstation. I just wish they'd offer a single 5410 (2.33ghz) or 5420 (2.5ghz) as an entry level machine for former Power Mac users. A $2300 price tag drives away users and they're making an awfully big bet they'll choose to either pay the much higher price tag or buy a machine as feature poor as the iMac over jumping ship.

Apparently you've never seen the PC gaming market then.

I just don't think it's worth the money. I rather spend my $3,000 plus dollars on a host of other things. Some people do so I let them be. Unless the Mac or PC is integral to what I do on a daily basis or provides some other value other than kiddie games, I will find my entertainment elsewhere.

Although I can easily afford a gaming PC, I don't really care about playing the latest and greatest World of Warcraft or whatever videogame is out there. Life is too short to be a slave to video card. Besides, I like playing the casual game on a console, but it is more oriented towards NCAA Football or some other sports title.

Love all but one thing

320GB HD, they must be laughing at us. This should have been 500GB min.

Apart from that the update is very good news.

Single-CPU question

Anyone know for sure whether or not the single-CPU option will use the same motherboard as the dual-CPU machines? In other words, will there be an empty socket for future upgrades?

Prepare for the usual video card grips from people that over emphasize the importance of video cards for what they do with a computer.
EDIT: I see that it has already started.

What about gripes from video editors and CG animators who understand exactly what they need a video card for? I think we have some valid points.

Though I agree, I'm more puzzled by another typical response:
"I wish they'd have changed the case so everyone would know I have a new one". Not exactly a "pro" sentiment?

It's not that puzzling. First, the Mac Pro design is stale, and if there is one thing production professionals don't like, it's stale design.

Another thing, the appearance of bleeding edge tech can help a production company's sales depending on the client base. You'd be surprised how much a little gadgetry can prop up one's credibility when prospective clients come for a site tour. We prefer to impress them with actual samples of our work, but a little bling can soften them up on the way in.

Of course, a lot of our clients wet themselves with delight at the sight of dual monitors.

Nice update but nothing groundbreaking. Still hoping for something in between an iMac and a Mac Pro.

For home use, I am completely with you on that one. For home, I want the specs of an imac, but upgradeable and no monitor.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but $2,799 was the entry model's price for Canada for the 2.66Ghz mid-end.

That's about right, I think. Maybe when I did that voodoo to bring prices in line with the exchange rate, I accidentally brought US prices up instead of Canadian prices down. Whoops.

Does this mean 10.5.2 should be coming within a few days? Aren't drivers needed for the new hardware, particularly the video cards?

FANTASTIC! Enybody knows if these machines are quiet? Are they liquid-cooled? Thanks.

Value and worth is totally subjective. Chances are I don't give a **** what you buy with your $3000. If you saw what I spend on a single mono channel amplifier(more than the macpro), you'd probably drop dead.
