Hmmmm...this begs an important question for me. I currently have a GeForce 8800 that I bought recently for my PC....I wonder if I could ad it to this new mac pro model? Same with a 500gb SATA HD that I just bought...anyone know anything about non-mac produced upgrades?

Hello,

My mistake about IBM and Intel. Point remains though.

As for Apple getting the first high-end Penryn machines out?

http://www.trustedreviews.com/pcs/news/2007/11/29/Dell-Workstations-Get-A-Penryn-Workout/p1

Sorry. I don't know when those machines actually shipped, though.

As for most of your comments: maybe it's the market that's changing, slowing down. Seems that I remember the PowerMac introductions as incredible events! Now Mac Pros are just run of the mill updates.

Expecting too much, or expecting what I've gotten used to from Apple, may have been my problem.

Paying 3 grands for a Mac Pro or 1 grand for a top end (not as powerful, grant you, but who's to say unless you're one of the *very* few who use their Mac Pro to their fullest capacity) Win XP box... I don't know.

My next computer will be a Mac, certainly. An iMac, most likely. The market *is* changing. But the one after that? I don't know. I hope something changes *back* in the way Apple Computers has changed.

Can someone highlight the specific Penryns being used?

X5482 12MB 3.20 GHz 1600 MHz DP 150W
X5472 12MB 3.00 GHz 1600 MHz DP 120W
X5450 12MB 3.00 GHz 1333 MHz DP 120W
E5472 12MB 3.00 GHz 1600 MHz DP 80W
E5462 12MB 2.80 GHz 1600 MHz DP 80W
E5450 12MB 3.00 GHz 1333 MHz DP 80W

?

if it's such a great workstation why does it have gaming video cards in stock configuration and available as BTO ;)

that said no gamer will get a quadro since it's most likely based on an older architecture with more conservative clock speed and vram...

Not being rude to you or other gamers, but the clue is in the name...

...WORKstation..???

simple, workstations aren't meant for games! It so obvious. Sun Microsystems don't offer custom spec graphic cards on their systems do they???

If Apple meant for the system to be used for gaming, they would probably provide custom set-ups for the Graphics card and also a quality sound card as well-something that has always been lacking and never talked about.

That Dell :

Uses the old quad-core not the new ones.

One of:
X5472 12MB 3.00 GHz 1600 MHz DP 120W
E5472 12MB 3.00 GHz 1600 MHz DP 80W

I'm sure Apple would want the E5472, but it costs more (only ~$65) and there may be supply issues for one or the other.

I think his point was why as a Workstation are they shipping a mid-high end graphics card designed with games in mind, when there are much better options for 3D content creation from the workstation lines (Quadro/Fire GL).

Which is a fair question and I would imagine the answer is due to cost/profit and image.

I'm posting this on page 25 so no one will ever see it probably, but the AU apple store shows that the ATI 3870 was a late scratch from the lineup. Plus, there is a bunch of placeholder text. Someone above mentioned the Belgian store having the same issue. It is amusing that they translated the text before finalising it.

If you go to the Mac Pro page and configure it. Click on the Learn More link for the video cards, you get this:

same for the new zealand store. I'm guessing there were some technical issues with this card so they pulled it at the last moment. This means that they'll likely add it as a BTO option in not too distant future.

LOL, Sound :)
Everyone who's serious about sound's got a MOTU or similar anyway. Then you need a bung of Monitors that start at $400 per unit so you're looking at $2800 minimum for a surround auditioning system. It kinda kills the joy of MP3 and AAC. With a decent sound rig, those sound like your grandmother farting in the chimney. :p

Intel obviously didn't feel inclined to include e-SATA on their workstation class boards. HP and Dell didn't include e-SATA and now neither does Apple. Moving terabytes of data in and out of these workstations is pretty slow even at FW800 speeds!

Super psyched for the new MPs. Like the rest of you I've been waiting f o r e v e r for these things.

Question: I want to try to run Crysis on this thing in Boot Camp. What version of Vista should I get to install? Home Premium? Would Home Basic suffice? Do I need the Ultimate version? I'm a total windows newbie so any info would be a big help.

Also, I heard the 64bit version gives a bump when playing Crysis. These new MPs can take advantage of that, right?

Thanks!

I know that these new processors are CPU Socket Type LGA 771 (from newegg)

Question is will they work in the 'original' Socket 771 macpros from last year?

That would be a nice processor swap!

eSATA and HDMI would'be been a couple of nice touches, but I suppose we'll see dirt-cheap add-on cards before too long, if they're not out already.

His point was from a gamers perspective. And he is right on that, but mac Pros aren't designed specifically for gaming.

Also, the card selected (NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600) is aimed at video production, so its a redundant issue when talking about gaming anyway. Apple aren't really giving them a higher spec option.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/io_1193732068708.html

I would agree that the cost/profit issue was a major factor. Only businesses and wealthy individuals will still be only be able to afford the very top spec of the New Mac Pro all "pimped" out.

Another reason why the is also compatibility and availability. By choosing the card Apple has taken a middle ground- and this card is still enough for most 3D contend creation. Apple aren't trying to get a big slice of the market, they are offering an alternative to other platforms and trying to attract clients with smaller budgets.

Is that why apple considers the Mac Pro "The Ultimate Gamer" machine?

http://www.apple.com/games/hardware/

Today's updates are nice but too little too late for me. I already decided to upgrade my PC for gaming. I don't think running 8 core + 8800GT for WoW makes "The Ultimate Gamer" cost effective.

Listen Im a lawyer so im going to be rough. Apple overcharges for everything. The only reason why they became popular is through their ipod and iphone. Now the macbook and imacs are popular. macbook pros are starting to get popular but no where near as much as the macbook. Apple has been horrible at selling macpro they are so over priced, my desktop is not much slower in fact it has more ram, a much faster video card i mean like 80% nvida 8800ultra and it has a very nice design for a fraction of the price. Apple still over charges here, it is very sad because if they want 15 % markete share they wont get it by those current prices. I understand it is for people who do video editing but they should make the macpros with core duo and more afforable ram + faster video card.

It's not overpriced, if it is how come in the hundreds of posts here nobody has been able to find a cheaper PC with the same specs? There's no question apple way overcharges for some things like ram, HD upgrades, monitors, but they have a number of products that are competitively priced.

It sounds like your complaint is more that apple doesn't offer cheaper, more stripped down alternatives (the forever discussed midtower), which is different from "overpriced".

It doesn't say when they shipped, and it makes no mention of 8 core machines.

What the hell??

No new case design? No new displays? No Blu-Ray option? What is this some kind of joke?

Aside from the DDR2 memory, there's nothing in the new machine that I care for in the slightest.

Thanks to Apple, I STILL feel like i've basically got the newest machine out there.

You really should read all of the specs.

No but the single quad core with the 8800 gt for $2500 isnt too bad. The 8800 gt is recommended for Crysis. So should have no problem running it.

I play a few games and this new mac pro should have zero problem running them. But I'll keep using my PC for those since it takes care of my gaming needs. This Mac Pro is for everything else and if my PC dies i'll have no problem playing the games i play on it. Great backup as well for me.
