And yet, by all accounts, the new Macs with the M1 so far have blown away the previous models in terms of performance?

It’s a riddle, isn’t it?

M1 is limited in RAM and ability to drive more than a single monitor.

Also if it is as powerful as they say and it benchmarks why haven't they replaced the Mac Pro with it? Why didn't they release a 30 inch iMac today?

Also not all apps run natively on it currently which means Intel still has the advantage overall in real world use.

Another worry is that Apple will cease using third party GPUs when it comes to replace the more powerful Macs.

People really need to stop with this "chin chin chin chin" stuff. We do NOT WANT form over function. I would rather have a chin then have insufficient cooling or any sort of compromises.
while I agree in principle the problem is this is already form over function (so thin its needs a external powerbrick, external ethernet)

And without a chin we would lose speakers, probably will require smaller cooling and more. Ethernet is going to eventually become legacy. Wifi 6 has replaced gigabit ethernet in my house.

I'm not asking for the kitchen sink here, I'm asking for the most widely-used port. Go to a Walgreens and check out, you'll see a wall of USB memory sticks and SD cards for sale, no USB-C sticks.
And I remember when Walgreens stocked cases of multiple brands of 3.5" diskettes, no 8" floppies.

the iPhone and the iPads have a chain for their speakers?
...Did you watch the video? The speakers are in the space that the chin has. Putting the speakers behind the display tech would be bad. And the iPhone does not have a 24" display and desktop class speakers. The speakers on the iPhone is horrible even compared to my 2019 iMac.

pretty good chance that your scanner and printer has a detachable cable. Just get a USB-C cable or even a hub to connect all those 4 cables.
Once you run out of USB-C ports, it's hard to get more. So the USB-A cable on the printer + a USB-A dongle on the Mac really is the best option, annoying as that is.

Guys...there’s clearly going to be a “power user” model. This is the entry level device. I suspect WWDC is going to show off the power MacBook Pros and power iMacs...I think these are neat for your average consumer, and more than enough power for them.

People who expected M1X or any of the "pro" models (27" iMac, 16" MBP, Mac Pro) seriously need to think about their expectations. It makes MORE sense to announce M1X at the WWDC so developers can make use out of the extra cores on the M1X. And, this has been said time and time and time again that this is going to be a 2 year transition. Do not expect the $50,000 Mac Pro to be updated day 1 people. This is going to be a transition. Low end products (low end Mac mini, low end 13" MBP and MacBook Air first, then low end iMac). Next up is for pros that need more.

And also, the M1 does some very powerful workflows. Why I replaced my $4,500 i9 iMac with the $1,000 Mac mini.

Form over function is exactly what Apple has done with this design.

There is no need for it to be that thin, its a desktop. All they needed to do was take the XDR design and it would have fit all the components inside it with plenty of room to spare for cooling.

Also in using the XDR design they would have removed the chin, gave it height adjustability and thinner bezels.

I doubt they compromised the speed of the CPU and GPU to make it this thin. While in theory with more power you can get a faster chip, there's no beefier M1 yet.

There is no reason for it to be thicker just to be thicker. The M1 runs in a fanless very thin MacBook Air for crying out loud. It doesn't need to be twice as thick with ALL THAT EMPTY SPACE either. And even as thin as it is, I still saw unused space as they were showing it off.

This is a far better design. Flat back instead of a bubble shape like my 2019 iMac.

Typical Apple, again, underwhelmed.
Fugly= Pastel colours, front panel chin, rounded keyboard corners.
Disappointment= M1 8/8 CPU/GPU (expected 16/16), front panel glass not anti glare, tiny LCD (minimum should be 27” even still, a 27” is tiny), missing 2 x M.2 NVME for additional user storage, the keyboard arrow keys full-size are annoying to use and the rounded corners, what is with Apple and their obsession with Rounded everything...ugh too much

Basically all iPads and Macs are exactly the same with no differential at all at the moment, so stupid. Clearly Apple jumped the gun on moving to Apple Silicone because they haven't developed real desktop class chips currently. They are just stuffing the M1 in everything.
Apple said it would take 2 years. Just be patient and wait about 2 years before you buy a new Mac to get the full picture.

Because i) it's likely to be FUNCTIONAL and ii) from a product design perspective it actually make it look BETTER! Maybe a controversial opinion to those hardcore geeks that get angry in here, but most of the public and certainly I think most designers would say it looks better and gives it form. If it was just a floating screen then it would just look like a boring monitor, in the same way more phone these days all look the same. This has a commanding presence on a desk when switched on or off, I'm surprised people in these forums can't see that.

As for height adjustment... move your head, it has more adjustment than any monitor would do. I have a monitor at work that can be adjusted an infinite number of ways... I never once bother to adjust it!
A lot of people, and I mean A LOT of people, like to put sticky notes on the sides and chin.

Unused space could have = repairability which would have = better longevity = better for the environment.
This is NOT possible on the M1.....Period. The CPU, GPU, RAM, Cache and Fabric are ALL on the same chip. What would you upgrade?

The fact Macs aren't coming with a minimum of 1TB SSD storage is also a joke.

I mean come on even the PS5 comes with 825GB and Xbox Series X has 1TB. I believe both drives are faster than those in Macs currently as well.

Also, people arguing about the external power bricks. You do realize between some popular Monitor brands that this is quite common? I have dozens of monitors that have external power bricks. And these are PREFERRED because I get about a 10-13 foot cable. The power cable that used to come with the iMacs were always just too short for me. So yes, I will take an external power brick any day for the added length.

Again with this nonsense. Even some baseline professional laptops and computers from the likes of Dell, HP, Lenovo still have 256GB starting. My work laptop is 256GB. Guess what, it is ENOUGH for my needs. Video Games are not something to go off of as there are some games, a SINGLE game that can take 100GB or more. I have dozens of software, even ALL available loops for Garageband, Logic Pro and MainStage and I am only using 170GB. Do I need ALL loops? No, but I have them all and I have plenty of space left over.

well, that's one imac I have no desire for. No lusting after this./
Those colours, what are they? this is a 20-something inch imac, not a 5 inch phone. OMG.
Truly, how big is the market for a yellow or pink imac??

Apple Silicone
Silicone is found in a tube used to fill gaps in your bathroom.
Silicon is an element used in transistors.
You’re in the UK, I hope I’m right in assuming you are American, if not you ought to ‘nice up’ your English.

Would you prefer they put less powerful chips in them, just to avoid that?
There used to be a confusing choice of chips: i3, i5, i7, i9, desktop or laptop TDP, clock speed choices, etc. Now it is just the same M1 chip in iPad, laptop, desktop, and mini, and all seem to have the same TDP and clock speed? Some people need all the horsepower they can get, others don't.
