Everyone's saying this is a mainstream device to justify the lame-sized 24" display and M1 with its limitations, but how much of the mainstream even buys desktop computers any more rather than laptops or even iPads instead?

Personally, I was really looking forward to finally replacing my 2012 Mac Pro, and it's not going to be with one of these toy iMacs. I have an M1 MBP and I know what it can do. It's a fantastic machine but inadequate for my desktop production needs.

And are "toy" and "high end desktop production needs" the only two options here?

Downward facing ports on a display are enough to make a grown man cry, even on a display that rotates.

> How do I see where to plug this in?

> well either you pick up the whole computer, or you scratch around with a 3.5mm jack over the surface till you find the hole. I bet it’ll sound awesome if you forgot to turn off the speakers/amp first.

> you tilt your head, just as you need to if you want to plug it in on the side

> if you have speakers or amps i doubt you would unplug it and for that purpose I’d rather have it underneath, besides it’s easier that having to fiddle around on the back anyways.

Anyways I’m happy that you’re happy with the side facing port, i wireless for all my audio so i don’t really care, just my 2 cents.

To be clear I agree that the position seems a bit odd i think it was just the least bad option.

as for turn your head - you can physically see the side of a display or iMac just standing or sitting in front and slightly to one side. It’s quite unlikely you will be able to see a port on the bottom of the computer is sitting on a desk.

It's an entry level iMac with M1.

The iMac Pro with GPU is clearly coming later in the year or next. Obviously with beefier specs & probably with a different more premium design.

I'd be surprised if it was a different design to be honest - when was the last time different sized iMacs had different designs? A most, different colours perhaps, but the chin and bezel will likely be the same.

I think with this stuff, it quickly becomes something you don't really notice, but I do think the main thing with the white bezel is that it will be accentuated when its switched off as it will contrast with the black of the screen.

And with the chin, I think it is accentuated because it doesn't have the logo to break it up a bit, and add a little character.

I'm not asking for the kitchen sink here, I'm asking for the most widely-used port. Go to a Walgreens and check out, you'll see a wall of USB memory sticks and SD cards for sale, no USB-C sticks.
You see, there’s no SD card reader in my current iMac or in my 10 port hub. So that “most widely used port” would be quite useless to me. On my iMac. On my MacBook I use one as a portable time machine drive. So it’s not even consistent between my Macs.

PS I wouldn’t consider any memory sticks or SD cards other than SanDisk. Not sure if they are on that wall at Walgreens.

Basically all iPads and Macs are exactly the same with no differential at all at the moment, so stupid. Clearly Apple jumped the gun on moving to Apple Silicone because they haven't developed real desktop class chips currently. They are just stuffing the M1 in everything.

Stop the name calling. And I didn’t expect him to explain anything - because there is very unlikely to be any real reason other than the desire to complain.
Just calling a spade a spade. He doesn't need to explain or justify anything to you. He is perfectly free to offer his opinions whether you agree with him or not. Doing so is not complaining, it's offering his opinion which, despite your disagreement with it, is his right. So please, stop being an apologist for Apple.

Yeah, USB-A is a lot more important that SD. I'm guessing laptops have SD because they expect photographers to bring their laptops outside while shooting.

(In case you were wondering, Walgreens memsticks are SanDisk. Not that I'd buy from Walgreens; I was just naming the most normal store I can think of.)

Just wondering... Am I the only one, after 36 pages of posts, who notices that Apple doesn’t tell us about the clock speed of their chips anywhere? You’d hope that with more space for cooling and little need for saving power it would be higher than on the MBP.
The Mac mini M1 chip has the same clock speed as the MBP, IIRC. So I expect the same, except not really, given that thermal throttling is going to determine the clock speed you actually run at.

You will have a gorgeous battery life... on your imac...
you joke but I live rurally and power outages are a thing a few times a year(snow &/or falling trees kicking lines)
I already keep the modem on a battery backup so I have internet during the outage (sometimes those are left intact)
low Wattage is good on any device, id rather have it and not need it than need and not have it

I used to have that setup but found UPSs too unreliable compared to a laptop, which just has the battery built in. As cool as the iMac is, the laptop + monitors setup is probably here to stay for me.

White bezel? Looks rubbish.

Bet the repairability on these will be zero. Good work Apple caring for the environment. And before anyone jumps in, longevity + recyclability is the key to improving the environmental sustainability of a product, not just recyclability.

Why is 16GB of ram the highest upgradable amount? 16GB should be standard in 2021, with 32GB available as an upgrade.

And yet, by all accounts, the new Macs with the M1 so far have blown away the previous models in terms of performance?

It’s a riddle, isn’t it?

That’s just stupid. Do you think I should replace my scanner, printer, second keyboard and mouse (the ones in front of the other monitor) and my CD reader because it’s 2021?

pretty good chance that your scanner and printer has a detachable cable. Just get a USB-C cable or even a hub to connect all those 4 cables.

^ This is incomprehensibly ridiculous. No one should have to do that in order to connect their Apple phone to their Apple computer.
Yes, they should be forced to do that when they have old equipment and refuse to go wireless.

People really need to stop with this "chin chin chin chin" stuff. We do NOT WANT form over function. I would rather have a chin then have insufficient cooling or any sort of compromises.
