Does ‘Low end or entry level’ satisfy your interpretation better? Look at any LG, Samsung etc, ie Korean, Taiwanese and Chinese brands, the entry level usually always have external power, the mid and higher end almost always have Internal power. When it comes to Euro/US brands like Phillips or Dell, practically all their models are internal power.

I bought a Phillips 32” 4K monitor a few weeks ago, $550 AUD with internal power, all similar monitors in same price range from LG, Samsung etc were external power, hence I consider those LG, Acer, ASUS, MSI etc cheapo brands...
"Low end/Entry level" is still not the $500 price. You even mentioned a $550 priced monitor.

Read what I said....its not enabled now. So you think a PS5 at 256GB would have been fine? I still don't know why you are arguing computer storage and comparing it to consoles. Even ALL the software I have installed, I am only using 170GB of space. Why should I need 1TB?

Uh I have had this work laptop for 3 years now. 256GB of storage has always been fine. Never been at risk of not enough storage.

And BTW, my parents have had a 256 GB iMac since 2013. Still no risk of running out of space 8 years later.

You’re clutching at straws to pull an argument together and its not working. It’s complete jibberish.

Whether it’s a games console or computer more storage is always better. Apple is being cheap.

So in 3 years you have neve deleted a single file from that laptop, you’ve never ever moved something to the bin? Or transferred something off it to an external drive? Pull the other one.

Wow. Who approved these white bezels?

The colors don't bother me... a throwback to the debut, but those white bezels... eewwww!

Post-Ive Apple design... sigh.

Person A needs 10 USB ports.
Person B only needs 2.

Why include 10 for the select few? In fact, my parents don't use ANY USB ports. They use the wireless keyboard and mouse that comes with the iMac. 0 USB ports used AT ALL.
So is person B the average person, who needs 2? Then they should include 2. Not a bold statement.

Well... we had questionable design decisions with Jony Ive... and now we have questionable design decisions without Jony Ive...

So... maybe it wasn't his fault after all.

Maybe it's Apple...

It's not about requiring 100 percent upgradability, its about ensuring long term repairability and thus usability which is the best environmental outcome.

There is no way I would get 9 years out of a base current MacBook Pro, upgradability and repairability on the other hand has enabled me to get nearly 9 years out of my 2012 MacBook Pro 13 inch (and counting).

If Apple let me install MacOS on my own computer then things would be peachy but they don't.
Well my wife has >7 years out of her totally non-serviceable rMBP and counting. Components don't fail the way they used to. Did your 2012 MBP have its HDD die and you put an SSD in?

No, because my workflow is set that once I have the files, I don't need much more. Have you ever done software development? Are you saying .cs files in Visual Studio will take up GB of storage? The most our codebase has increased - and it is enterprise grade millions of lines of code and dozens of projects, hundreds of classes per projects and this is a VERY low estimate. The most it has increased is 1GB. Going from 10GB to 11GB in space. WOW hold on I need to get 1TB OMG!!!!

I have never had to delete any of the files. I downloaded the repo - took 10GB of storage with all the source files. Only increased to 11GB in 3 years. *.cs files are not that large of space.

And regarding your other comment that people typically don't have a dedicated gaming computer. You do realize that most businesses will fire their employees if you install games on the computer right? So I CANNOT play on my work computer even if I wanted to.

I think they look good, I really don't mind the "chin" all that much, and I actually like the array of colours. Silver is still an option for people who want something neutral. The bezel I am undecided on, I need to really see it in person to decide.

Personally, I would wait for a new 27 inch but I bought a new iMac recently for Bootcamping purposes, prior to knowing how M1 would shape up. In a few years if this is the form factor they have, I am totally okay with it.

Xcode and Android Studio do take a crazy amount of storage, though. Also NodeJS if you've got lots of projects with dependencies, unless you do the global + linking route but eh.

Ok, can someone who is smarter than me and knows more about electrical engineering or computers answer my question?

See this image:

So, what is going on with all of that empty space in the middle of the redesigned iMac with M1? What is up with those metal sheets?

Isn't it puzzling that the redesigned iMac has all of this empty space and it is not being used at all?

It puzzles me for sure! I wonder if the higher-end or 27-inch iMac will utilize this empty space more efficiently and Apple just isn't allowed to talk about it just yet.

Thoughts?

Visual Studio itself takes up 50GB with all the extras enabled. So Windows + 50GB + 11GB of source files + several utilities is still about 170GB of my 256GB of space. Chance of going over 256 in the next 3 years is slim. And since this laptop is already 3 years old, I will have a new one in a year or two anyway.

ZERO repairability!

#iPadMac
What were you planning on repairing on a system-on-chip machine with integrated memory? I'm sure you can replace the whole board and salvage the display if necessary, and the PSU is external.

Apple is proving that discrete PC components are going to go the way of the dodo bird.

I'd love an iMac disguised as a monitor, with a VESA mount so I could attach it to my swing arm and move it wherever I wish on my desk. Nope. The chin also looks quaint now, but the mounting/stand is the biggest negative for me.
There is a VESA version availabl.

I’d love a Mini in these color choices.

Yeah, I actually stopped typing my comment, but somehow it posted when I went back. Was going to say, I only use 180 total on my laptop. It's easily 1TB on my desktop with my photo library, videos, music, etc, but you were only talking about SWE.

Yes for a work laptop, I can't have personal files on there so its JUST work or else I get fired! Which is fair, work resource should be for work. Like I said, I have a custom built gaming PC with 8TB of SSD storage with yes pictures, music, a LOT of games, 3TB worth of games. and I also do software development on this system too so I have Visual Studio on it too.

Can someone suggest a good looking monitor to purchase with my iMac? It's so ugly I will put it under my desk.

With Ive we had beautiful products that put form over function (Mac Pro Trash Can, 12-inch MacBook, Siri Remote)

The new iMac is just ugly.

Jony made poor design choices sure, but I don’t think he ever made anything ugly.

Apple defenders:

"NO! You're using your computer wrong! You are not supposed to have big files!

Let us forget, for a moment, the declining prices of SSD chips, the fact that a desktop machine isnt space constrained so it can have all the ports it wants, that there are industry standards ensuring plug and play SSD modules, and that by soldering the SSD apple can reap all the profits they want."

Yeah, lets forget anything about. Just use the computer like we told you to and don't sweat the small stuff okay?"

SMH.

Where did I say you can't have big files? I posted earlier that I have a custom built gaming computer with 8TB of SSDs. I am replying that 256 is just NOT enough for ANYTHING these days when it in fact is enough for my work laptop.

Basically all iPads and Macs are exactly the same with no differential at all at the moment, so stupid. Clearly Apple jumped the gun on moving to Apple Silicone because they haven't developed real desktop class chips currently. They are just stuffing the M1 in everything.
More like Apple designed a tablet chip that is so much faster than intel’s low-end desktop chips that they might as well use it in the entry-level desktops. These M1 iMacs will crush an i3. If paying $2400 for an iPad or $1300 for an iMac is hard to justify when you can get the same chip in a $599 mini, do what I did and buy the mini!
