More like Apple designed a tablet chip that is so much faster than intel’s low-end desktop chips that they might as well use it in the entry-level desktops. These M1 iMacs will crush an i3. If paying $2400 for an iPad or $1300 for an iMac is hard to justify when you can get the same chip in a $599 mini, do what I did and buy the mini!
It competes with the i9 9900k! So why does the low end systems need more than that?

Why Apple using MagSafe-like power cable on iMac as there are no battery in backup...
If someone kick the cable accidentally, unsaved data or any program under processing will be total loss...
Great point there for sure. What’s the appeal here?

Ok, read through the first few pages of comments .... I'm gonna say it. Even if I'm alone.

I LOVE the new design. It's 99% perfect. -1% for the straight stand, I preferred the tapered one, it looked more harmonic.

I actually did a happy dance over the white bezels. I missed the white iMac ever since they switched to silver/black in ... 2007? I don't mind what everyone calls the "chin", not even at all.

The colors look refreshing and I've been wishing for colors since forever; I loved the colorful iMac back in the 90s.

This whole thing made me go "wow". It's sexy af.

The only thing I'm missing is a space grey/black option. And 27" (or up) screen size. I'm currently at a 27" iMac and won't go smaller. So I'm gonna hold out hoping they'll offer a second size eventually (I suspect they haven't solved heat issues with such a large size just yet?). But damn, I'm so gonna buy this once they hopfefully offer one. I like the blue. Would have looooved a dark teal one, but you can't have everything. Still hoping for spacegray/black eventually.
I’m with you on this! I love how they look. I was also super happy about the light bezels. I’m still rocking a 10.5” iPad Pro and I really love how the white bezels look on that device. Maybe it’s because my first Apple laptop was a 2008 white MacBook, but either way, white devices have always been my favorite.

I work from home and I’m not into anything that requires super intense computing power. Mainly I type documents, read long PDFs, use email and Zoom, that kind of thing. My iPad Pro actually works great for all of that but I’ve been wanting a larger screen lately. 24” is perfect for my use case. I don’t want anything so big that it would overwhelm my small-ish home workspace, and I loved the size of the 24” LED Cinema Display back in the day. I’m also so happy about True Tone and Touch ID - those were two things I was hoping for in a new iMac.

This is definitely not a “pro” device, but I think Apple will introduce a new iMac Pro later this year once these launch. For now, this seems like a great device for all of us who were recently thrust into a WFH situation and who want to invest in our home workspaces without spending a ton. I’ll be preordering a silver one as soon as they open it up.

Oh no - back to Ives designs - thinner, non upgradeable, and no ports, on the last Apple machine to have a full plethora of ports. Right as everyone was praising that the new iPad was thicker. And here we are hoping the upcoming Macbook Pros will have more ports than before... (Well I'm still hoping.) Let's hope this is all a side effect of the limitations of the initial M1 system on a chip, coming from an iPhone/iPad - maybe it just can't support other kinds of ports yet? The iMac seems a lot like a 24" iPad with no touch screen.

In all seriousness, I can see the main design target of these being reception desks in fancy offices. They're a form of decoration. This might be a sign that the iMac is being degraded to the realm of a Macbook Air, while the Mac Pro will take over the duties of more demanding computer users?

OK, let's be grateful for the small things - it still has a headphone jack, and Apple saw the need to add a wired Ethernet port back (thank you!) even if they had to do it through the power brick. Maybe in the future the power brick will expand into a full dock.

I'm not a fan of the white bezels; I would have preferred black. Black often disappears into content; white doesn't really do that. It just doesn't look right.

As someone who's actually worked for years on a white iMac with white bezels - I actually preferred those. Because they blend into the wall/surroundings, the black ones always remained a noticeable border. I don't look at enough mostly-black content for the content to disappear into the bezel like you describe.

And, the BLACK bezel but WHITE accessories have really really bugged me ever since they made that change. (so yes, naturally, I switched to black/space grey keyboard and mouse/touchpad as soon as they offered those)

Wow. Who approved these white bezels?

The colors don't bother me... a throwback to the debut, but those white bezels... eewwww!

Post-Ive Apple design... sigh.

You might wanna take another look at those older iMacs. You might notice they all had white bezels... all the up until 2007. There's your COMPLETE throwback.

In my humble opinion as a school teacher who’d like to have an M1 iMac in the classroom these are my takeaways: I don’t mind the $1,299 price and the educational discount. I don’t mind the use of the M1 chip. What I find insulting is getting only 256GB of storage and limited ports as opposed to what the m1 Mac Mini has. At $1,299 there should be a standard 512GB hard drive some USB A ports and HDMI. The $1,499 model should be equipped with 16GB of RAM and potentially a larger hard drive up to a terabyte, but the RAM increase should have definitely been included in a $1,500 desktop. For the following school year I’ll be getting a Mac mini unfortunately, since it won’t have all the niceties of the iMac with its 4.5K display, great keyboard and mouse, awesome sound system and a nice webcam. Unfortunate, as just a few items would’ve made this the perfect computer.

Apple has announced a new, redesigned 24-inch iMac, featuring an M1 chip, a 4.5K display, and a range of color options, as well as an improved cooling system, front-facing camera, speaker system, microphones, power connector, and peripherals.

m1-imac-colors.jpg

The new iMac features a completely new compact design, and comes in a range of seven striking colors, including green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue, and silver.
These are horrible. that chin. No logo. The white plastic. Jony Ive has definitely left the building.

I thought I'll chime in (with my non-designer thinking) on some of the design decisions that Apple made with the 24" iMacs.

First the white bezels. I think they went with white as it's neutral, and a darker colour (e.g. black) will take away the vibrant feel of the new colour palettes, giving it a sombre feel. The base model iMacs are probably meant to appeal to their younger customer demographics.

The thinness probably are more from a manufacturing and logistic angle. Thinner case uses less material, and will make the entire package lighter, resulting in cheaper shipping. The 21.5" iMac weighs around 12.5 pounds (5.66 kg), while the new 24" iMac weighs around 9.88 pounds (4.48 kg) (I think without the power brick.) Most Apple products are shipped via air freights when they initially launch, so reducing weight will save them a lot of shipping cost.

Then there's the much hated 'chin', although it doesn't really bother me that much. I mainly looked at the screen of my 27" iMac anyway and basically the chin is invisible to me. Some have pointed out that it's where the computer portion of the iMac sits, and it's also due to cooling. My take is that it is a combination of wanting to save weight, and thus going thin to achieve that goal. My 2010 27" iMac's graphic card was replaced with a GTX765M as the AMD card stopped working. Due to this swap, the LCD monitor was stuck at maximum brightness, and this heats up the iMac pretty fast. If the M1 iMac's motherboard is placed behind the LCD panel, more cooling would be needed, which requires vents in the iMac's back, thus increasing manufacturing cost, increases weight, and increasing shipping cost. If I'm not wrong, the entire back casing of the new M1 iMacs are now functioning as the LCD's heat sink.

That's why I think the chin lives on. And it will likely be the same design for the 27" iMac replacement.

People who expected M1X or any of the "pro" models (27" iMac, 16" MBP, Mac Pro) seriously need to think about their expectations. It makes MORE sense to announce M1X at the WWDC so developers can make use out of the extra cores on the M1X. And, this has been said time and time and time again that this is going to be a 2 year transition. Do not expect the $50,000 Mac Pro to be updated day 1 people. This is going to be a transition. Low end products (low end Mac mini, low end 13" MBP and MacBook Air first, then low end iMac). Next up is for pros that need more.

And also, the M1 does some very powerful workflows. Why I replaced my $4,500 i9 iMac with the $1,000 Mac mini.

Yes, M1X 30" iMac is coming

The bezels aren't white. They are silver. remember these silver bezels?

I will never understand these complaints about bezels...

Especially about bezels in one of the most powerful iMacs that Apple has ever produced.

Those silver bezels are ugly too.

Nah, they're not.

I for one, however, still only kind of accepted but never really liked the black bezels, *particularly* on the Macbooks. And I've been using one with black bezels for the last 5 years and an iMac with black bezels for the last 9 (but large enough screen to hardly notice while sitting in front of it). And I spend hours among hours in front of either, every day. Still haven't really fully gotten used to them.

They will never appeal to me. Only tolerated.

Same with my first iPad - I specifically chose the white one over the black, it just looked classier. And just like ... "Apple". One of the main hallmarks of Apple design/products was "white" for a really damn long time.

It's like NONE of all you complainers have ever used Apple products before everything went silver/black.

And for the record: I'm someone who usually prefers black over white anything.

And really, let's not even get started on the hideous mismatch that are the black bezels but white accessories. Particularly in a stationary desktop computer.

Can someone tell me what the purpose is of having Ethernet through the power brick? Advantages/disadvantages ?
