Why are so many people using this as a Homelab? Wouldn't it be much better to just use something from synology or an old PC? Am I missing some nice performance form Macs or is it just the aesthetic (I does look pretty nice)?
Pay the apple tax to have peace of mind I guess, in your case minimum 512I don’t even own Final Cut Pro, but I do have iCloud Drive. Hmm. I would probably be okay on 256GB…
If a person is using Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro to that degree, why wouldn’t you go for the M4 Pro version anyway? You see, so why the earlier "no not true statement", add Logic to the mix as well, 256gb is a no go, and 500 is comically risky, 1tb is a minimum.
You all should really speak up about this, a 1tb m.2 is $80? Apple is charging 400 when it should really come as the minimal spec with 16gb.
Sounds like they should’ve pulled the store down for this guy.It LITERALLY was just announced

They actually have 2 512GB SD base versions. One for $799 with 16GB RAM and one for $999 with 24GB RAM which is very cool. Now that 16GB is the minimum, you could do another 8GB to future-proof.Pay the apple tax to have peace of mind I guess, in your case minimum 512
Oh I'm considering it, BUT even in my heavy storage use case my M1 (not pro or max) isn't that boggled up (it get so, but considering the generations passed I'd still need to see official benchmarks to decide if I would benefit form the pro ) , so I'm open to whatever. I'm not caught into the "get the max Apple has to offer band wagon", just trying to be realistic on specs. If a person is using Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro to that degree, why wouldn’t you go for the M4 Pro version anyway?
Yes at that price the 24gb (m4 pro was it?) looks better. They actually have 2 512GB SD base versions. One for $799 with 16GB RAM and one for $999 with 24GB RAM which is very cool. Now that 16GB is the minimum, you could do another 8GB to future-proof.
Yes but files in iCloud Drive, Documents & Desktop can be removed from the SSD and ONLY live in the cloud by right-clicking and clicking Remove Download. This has been a feature for a long time now that some people still don't know about.iCloud Drive can only reside on the main SSD.
What do you mean by Homelab? I have an old gaming PC I use for Unraid For Nextcloud, WebDAV, and Jellyfin. Is that the same thing? If so I agree? Why are so many people using this as a Homelab? Nope, still base M4. The M4 Pro model starts at $1399 for 24GB RAM/512GB SSD. Which is actually $100 more than what the M2 Pro model cost last year.Yes at that price the 24gb (m4 pro was it?) looks better.

It is not the pro. It is just the M4 for $999. The Pro costs $1399.Yes at that price the 24gb (m4 pro was it?) looks better.
One significant issue with the base storage capacity arises for those using DropBox... Apple now requires anything in DropBox that is also stored locally must be on the Mac's internal drive. So, if one wants instant access to large files that also reside in DropBox, the 256GB internal drive is a likely bottleneck.
Looks like Dropbox is working on this, using an encrypted external drive. Search for "Dropbox for macOS on File Provider". I use OneDrive because we have a family 365 subscription and I don't see any way around it as of yet. $200 for an extra 256GB is maddening, but expected.Surely there is a way around that. Symbolic links maybe.
I paid a lot more than that about a year ago b/c I couldn't wait any longer to upgrade, M1 with 8GB was useless with lots of apps open. Probably over double once I convert from AUD to USD.Heck Safari still freezes my M2 with 16 GB three times a day!If anyone sees this - I'll give you $500 right now

Yeah, exactly. IMO its better to offload any heavy lifting to PC/Linux and use Mac as the head/monitoring if you want. What do you mean by Homelab? I have an old gaming PC I use for Unraid For Nextcloud, WebDAV, and Jellyfin. Is that the same thing? If so I agree?
That's where Optimize Mac Storage comes in clutch.iCloud Drive can only reside on the main SSD (apart from the Photos library, that is)
Yes and no. I have a 2nd 2TB Thunderbolt drive that the files go on first before they go into iCloud. But my lesser-needed files just reside in iCloud. I have never had any issues with iCloud but I make sure all my important files are just in the iCloud Drive part and under their own folders. There are still a lot of people that don't understand (I see it on Reddit all the time) iCloud is 2 services in one, it's a sync and backup service but it's also a true cloud service. I see comments on Reddit all the time that iCloud is just a sync and backup service and always have to comment and say not true, the iCloud Drive folder is the true cloud part...How do you back them up anywhere else if you don’t have a copy locally?
Please don’t tell me iCloud drive is your only back up
I just pulled the trigger on the £999 top M4 model. I don’t do video editing or traditional ‘heavy lifting’ apps, so one could argue that an M4 Pro would be over spec’s for my productivity/office based needs. They actually have 2 512GB SD base versions. Yeah even on windows you can log into iCloud.com and get your files. Good point.Yes and no. I have a 2nd 2TB Thunderbolt drive that the files go on first before they go into iCloud.
