Does that config really make sense, at that point you would go the Mac Studio.
It will probably beat the M2 Max mac studio. It’s a strange awkward time for the Studio.. If there was a M3 Max Mac Studio, it would surely not be the case. But here we are…

I think M4 Pro with 48gb or 64gb ram is the sweetspot for me… Esp with memory bandwidth upgrade, it will likely scream in anything I throw at it… Light 3d work in blender/Zbrush… 4k editing/illustration/animation…

Do I need it? Currently mental acrobatics on olympic level justifying 48gb ram…. Might go just 24gb M4 pro and it will still murder my 2017 imac pro…
Optimize with 64 GB RAM for the immediate future.

The Studio will still destroy it, the jump from M2 to M4 is not that signifigant.

EDIT, ok after a bit more research it turns out I might be very wrong, The M4 Pro might be much closer to the M2 Max than I suspected.

Eh I see your point. Totally up to the end user I think.

For me,

There is no Mac Studio M4 at the moment + a current studio M2 Max with 64GB RAM and 1TB is $2600. This new Mac mini was $2200 and I truly have no need for the extra compute power in more cores with Mac Studio.

I guess it depends if the small jump in price + the wait is worth it. For me it's not. Im good with this!

Bottom. Odd place to put the power button.

A pet peeve of mine is accidentally shutting off my Intel Mac Mini because I’m “holding it wrong” when moving it. Possibly this is a common complaint, so Apple responded by moving the button to underneath the chassis. Good move!

Can’t wait to upgrade to the M4 Nothing / 24 GB / 1 TB. Shaddap and take my money, Cupertino!

Curious how stable/standard thunderbolt to HDMI 2.1 adapters are nowadays ? I've got my Mac mini M2 pro hooked up to a 43" OLED at 120/144 without issue , but remember a couple years ago adapters were hit and miss on this working.

(Edit apologies, I was reading the beginning of the thread that said HDMI was gone , but later on it says it's still there so I guess adapter not required , although am interested in those of you who have used one )

Forgot all about the announcement today.

Went to apple's website, saw it, ordered it - before I'd even watched or read anything.

Went for entry level - because seriously, $599 (or £599 where I am) - is a compelling price and the M1 I got in 2020, using it now - with 8gb and 256gb HD - entry level.
It has NEVER bothered me, despite the fact I do a lot of graphics work and coding.
External HD's solve the internal HD space.

It's only semi-pro and pro folk doing video, sound, 3D etc. who need the horsepower - and sure, there's plenty of those folk, on these forums.

I'm a coder and a graphics dabbler, so for me, 16gb and M4 is like _amazing_

The power I want, is for gaming - that's where a LOT of my money goes, on custom PC's for VR etc.

The funny thing is, I was searching for Thunderbolt 5 yesterday after the announcement of the iMac. I was trying to figure out how it supports 8K 120Hz, bandwidth, and other specifications.

For the MacBook Pros, I was planning to upgrade from my M1 Pro. However, I told myself that I would only upgrade once Wi-Fi 7 is released for MacBook Pros. If the M4 is based on the same production technology, I would imagine that even the MacBook Pro M4 Pro or M4 Max would have Wi-Fi 6E as well. So, it seems like I need to wait for the M5 Pro/Max with the A18 Pro technology.

Real world testing will tell. But we are talking two chip generations so my expectation is that a 64 GB RAM M2 Studio will not destroy a 64 GB RAM M4 Mac mini; more likely the Mac mini's M4 Pro will be similar to an M2 Max. In fact I would expect that for some things (Blender?) the Mac mini will beat the Studio.

Note that for the real world, optimizing really is very much about the RAM. The availability of 64 GB to Mac minis is a big deal, in fact the only reason we can have this discussion. The new Mac mini Pros with 64 GB RAM really are quite a nice upgrade.

I expect M4 Studios to rock, and raise the performance bar again. But Apple has always been lame on releasing Studios, so I am not expecting M4 Studios soon. <sigh>

If you don't need the extra compute power and really need the extra storage and ram then it could work well for you.

Super machine. Spec increase and price drop. I am up for it!
I wonder if 256 SSD is still single chip and half speed of the 512? My m2 mini has that and is half speed of m1 MBA 256. Given price drop and included memory I am thinking of adding 512gb SSD.

In CPU tasks it may be close but in Gpu the Studio would be far ahead.

For those entering desktop format vs notebook...are you splurging on the Apple Studio Display as well? Going with something else?

It looks fascinating. But I really want to see a tear down of an M4 Pro mini. I really want to see the guys of this little beast.

M2 Max vs M4? M2 Max will destroy vanilla M4 in multi-core and graphics. If we're talking M2 Max vs M4 Pro, it is more equal footing. In both cases however M4 and M4 Pro will be more powerful in single-core.

Not on desktops .. no way -- not 5 years ago at least

Far too many things people plug in that still use USB-A -- especially on desktops

It's nice for the customer to just be able to "plug things in"

Yeah, my PC has a pile of USB-A cables / dongles plugged into it, and frequently memory sticks too. None of my USB-C ports have anything connected, actually.

Removing widely used and useful ports is not courage; I thought we'd moved past this when the AS MBPs brought back HDMI, SD and MagSafe.
