Agreed. We use a secure VESA mount cage to fix the current model to the rear of our monitors. That is not going to work so well with that ill-conceived power button position.

Harder to secure, more pocket friendly, more sales?
I believe a cage mount will still work but with the bottom face sticking out the back. You probably want it that way to expedite cooling anyways

Instant preorder: Maxed out M4 Pro, 64GB RAM, 2TB SSD, 10Gbe Ethernet. This thing is going to smoke my 2017 iMac Pro.

You couldn't be bothered to see if the M4 Studio gets announced tomorrow?

Given that even the base model will have an M4 Max, at least 32GB of RAM and 10GbE as standard. Speccing up lower end models is usually much worse value than just going up a tier.

The funny thing is, I was searching for Thunderbolt 5 yesterday after the announcement of the iMac. I was trying to figure out how it supports 8K 120Hz, bandwidth, and other specifications.

For the MacBook Pros, I was planning to upgrade from my M1 Pro. However, I told myself that I would only upgrade once Wi-Fi 7 is released for MacBook Pros. If the M4 is based on the same production technology, I would imagine that even the MacBook Pro M4 Pro or M4 Max would have Wi-Fi 6E as well. So, it seems like I need to wait for the M5 Pro/Max with the A18 Pro technology.
it will be ridiculous if the pro machines don't get wifi 7. the stupid base phone has it. I'm pissed the Mac mini doesn't. never woulda guessed we'd get thunderbolt 5 before that. Remember the M2 has been in devices with both wifi 6 and 6e

that's not gonna happen. we'll be lucky to see it before summer.

does anyone know if the 256ssd in this mac mini is slower? I know there was reports where the ssd's in the m1 were faster than the m2s bc they split it. But i guess we may not know until there is a strip down.

Super machine. Spec increase and price drop. I am up for it!
I wonder if 256 SSD is still single chip and half speed of the 512? My m2 mini has that and is half speed of m1 MBA 256. Given price drop and included memory I am thinking of adding 512gb SSD.
this is my concern too. i have the m1 mini

Bit weird having the headphone jack on the front. As someone who often has their mini plugged in to my amp,
Yeah. I've always run audio from a Mac's jack to a pair of desktop speakers, and the audio port on the back is superior for that. Even the newer iMacs with the jack on the side is better because one can use an elbow connector that looks unobtrusive.

OMG there is so so much to say.

If you want to have some fun, compare the pro version to the highest version you can get of the imac

Hilarious 😆😆😆😆

Sweet form factor though, what it means for heating remains to be seen. That's a huge amount of space loss.
OMG what they're charging for the imac screen is ridiculous. For the same price you could get a similar spec mini and an LG 40 inch 5k display which frankly would look even more sleek

Been waiting for one of these as my 2017 27" iMac no longer supports any software upgrades. I currently run a 2TB SSD external hard drive with MacOS on it and all of my work files are held in Dropbox.

Would the 256GB for all the apps (Adobe Creative Cloud + MS Office mainly) with the 2TB plugged in for my files be fine do you think or pay the £200 extra for the 512GB?

I also have 40GB RAM in this iMac (i5 3.8 2017) but presumably the faster Apple Silicon M4 chip and 16GB RAM will still be loads faster?

I had an Apple engineer once tell me, “Whenever there is a new design, you should always wait for version 2 since version 1 will have bugs we never saw in the lab.” I knew this new model was going to come out, but still bought (2 months ago) the M2 Pro MacMini with 32 GB RAM and 2TB storage. Upgraded from a 2012 MacMini that serviced me well for 12 years.

trading in my base M2 Studio for an M4 Pro mini with 64GB and either 1 or 2TB storage. I made a mistake and only got 512G and have hit that limit a few times
At that configuration the price of the Mini will be more than the base price of the next Studio!

Apple prices for base models are good and if the base model fits your needs then its a good buy.

Also: for many, many years I've used external storage including for the boot drive. With TB connection to a fast SSD, you will likely not notice the speed difference compared to the internal storage, and it is much less expensive to buy a TB external storage case and put in a stick, than buying 1TB and especially 2TB SSD internal configs.

The ssd upgrade prices are absolutely outrageous. Brand name 1TB nvme drives can be bought for 50 bucks these days.

That's been standard Apple advice for the past few decades.

Not sure how significant it is in this case, though, given everything's on a few chips (which are / will be used throughout their range), and there's no LCD display or dGPU to worry about.

Yeah, we all know. Apple structures it's pricing to reflect the stratification of wealth in society. The base model is usually fairly good value, making the "starting at" price look good, but has a tightly limited spec. If you want more than that, prices go up steeply. They essentially subsidise the price of the entry level model.

I might be in the minority but I’m not a fan of the ports on the front just like the Mac Studio. May be practical but it loses its clean minimalist look. Don’t know what’s going on with Apple’s design these days but every it’s starting to look ‘busy’.

3 ports is hardly busy. Have to make some concessions to actually using the thing; it's not a sculpture (or if it is, it's a pretty boring one).

Yes and no. I have a 2nd 2TB Thunderbolt drive that the files go on first before they go into iCloud. But my lesser-needed files just reside in iCloud. I have never had any issues with iCloud but I make sure all my important files are just in the iCloud Drive part and under their own folders. There are still a lot of people that don't understand (I see it on Reddit all the time) iCloud is 2 services in one, it's a sync and backup service but it's also a true cloud service. I see comments on Reddit all the time that iCloud is just a sync and backup service and always have to comment and say not true, the iCloud Drive folder is the true cloud part...

Is iCloud keeping versions of files you can revert to if need be at least?

Historically -- and please correct me if this has changed -- The real issue with iCloud has been that it propagates changes back up into the cloud, which is absolutely not what you want for a true backup service

No I don’t like ports on the front either
I don’t like things looking like an octopus with wires front and back
I plan to get a usb c hub for the back
