And there’s still Ethernet! Would have liked to see 2.5 Gig Ethernet on the Pro but I’m just glad it’s still there at all!

These actually look really good. Hard to argue with even the base model configuration. Would always like to see a little more base storage but at least we’re finally there with the RAM.

You are absolutely correct that "Speccing up lower end models is usually much worse value than just going up a tier." But do note that Apple's 14-day return means a Mac Mini preordered can always go back if M4 Studio is announced.

Also note that the odds of an M4 Studio being announced this week are slim, approaching zero IMO. So for many getting (an IMO nicely priced) Mac mini now will be a superior choice over waiting months for a Studio. Personally I think the M4 MBPs are the devices that may be better choices than the upscaled Mac mini.

I don't know, we're only at Tuesday. Assuming Apple are announcing new Mac products all week, I'd say there's a good chance of a Studio before Friday. Especially as continuing to sell M2 Max / Ultra desktops after you've released M4 Max laptops isn't a good look; it's practically an f-you to desktop power users.

Mind you, that's nothing new. As you were.

I've never fully understood this. The M2 Mac mini I use at work has 512GB internal (as I struggled with 256GB in the past). Somehow 125GB is occupied by System Data. 1/4 of usable space gone just like that. Wish we had more control over how storage is used.
My M2 MP had 512GB SSD but only 150GB is used. My user folder is 70GB so the system is only using 80GB and that includes all of the app and a lot of transiently allocated space.

Energy consumption is always important.

And if one buys electricity over a pair of wires, which most people do, you'll find that running these new Mac Minis 24/7 over a whole year will cost you less than buying a NUC-copy that burns 2x to 4x as much energy.

How many pence less? Assuming you're not running Cyberpunk 24/7, and are more likely doing office stuff 8 hours a day on your mini.

I still balk at paying £200 for 256GB of extra storage... I find that criminal and I'd like to have words with the specific person at Apple who signs off on that level of gouging.. but I do want one.

I do agree they need to bump that up a bit but honestly it’s not like there’s any games, and hard drives are cheap, so if you need mass storage you might as well get an external HDD/SSD and/or NAS and call it done for storage with all your devices.

It is annoying but mostly the internal storage can be saved for things that need it.

Better them making money on that than the Ethernet port or the RAM.

I disagree, and I am living it because I use an M2 MBP in desktop mode driving multiple external displays. Taking up space on high tech devices by adding low-bandwidth legacy ports makes no sense. My USB-A hub has at least 5 devices plugged into it; it would be absurd to try to provide 5 lame USB-A ports in a Mini or in a laptop.

For a laptop - sure. Though even there, a single USB-A is undeniably useful for anyone who uses memory sticks or a presentation device.

For a desktop - no. There's no reason for it not to have 5 (or more) very useful USB-A ports across the back of the device. It's not going anywhere. Even the previous mini hardly took up much space.

But sure, the new one looks cool.

It shrank and grew in the wrong dimensions. Not only doesn't it fit a 1U rack space anymore, as it is too high, now they even make it incredibly inconvenient to reach the power switch. Hard pass for me. Hoped to finally upgrade my rack with a powerful desktop unit.

Had hoped this thing might use USB-C for power and so be able to use a single cable to a modern display for power and video purposes.
Wished for it - but never got my hopes up.

It‘s Apple after all - and USB-C power one of those things I imagined they just don’t want to deal with (and possibly be blamed for if output from a power source is flaky or insufficient).

Spec increase and price drop

No price drop on Education pricing.

What I've not seen anyone mention yet is that the Education prices have increased.

Except for the base model price, all other educational prices have gone up because:
1) base price of Pro has gone up $100.
2)
upgrades no longer get discounts. Just checked again later this evening and now the upgrade prices are showing 10% discount.

So there's that, for those who can buy at Education prices.

Well mentioned. I have an M1 MBP connected to my monitor using USB-C. The setup is super clean. Just a single power cable from the wall to the desk and then a cable from screen to laptop. Mouse, keyboard and speaker are all Bluetooth based.

Beautiful machine. I am sure such a little powerhouse will find lots of fans. But when spec’d up a bit, the price (again) is almost the same as the next Studio, as always with Apple‘s upsell strategy. 48GB/4TB is a price where the Studio might be the better option. Still, this is one desktop that in its cheaper configurations will find a lot of usage.
