Because you rack mount your Minis and power them on and off all the time?
Yes, I rack mount it. And in a rack I require a way to click the button in case of issues. The rack mounts for the old design had a mechanism to click the button on the back with a front button. Much harder to solve on the new design and the height will require a 2U bracket, which will waste vertical space. But the cooling wouldn't be very efficient in a rack anyways. Probably better to rip it apart and custom fit it in a new case.

How was your Studio lamed? Did you originally build it with inadequate RAM? I can think of no other reason to sell a Studio to buy a Mac mini [even though I consider the new mini to be a sweet upgrade, it remains Apple's lowest-end desktop].

Bought the Studio as a vanity project just to own one. Great but basically unused. Now I can sell it, get two thirds back and have enough capability in the Mini with one third cash left to spend.

Dan, one comment. In your video you stated the Thunderbolt 5 was capable of 120 gigabytes per second when in fact it’s 120 gigabits per second. This would be 15 gigabytes per second (still amazingly fast). The graphics were correct, but your mouth got a little over excited I believe…😉

They were thinking people want to plug headphones in and its a convenient place to do so.
Also many, many, many people hide their Mini in the case of minimalist desktop setups, so there may as well be ports all the way around for user like that.

We have some conference rooms with a setup similar to this for our articulating display mounts.

Buying the M4 Pro version. If I'm spending an extra $200, better off going to the 14-core CPU/20-core GPU or upgrade to the 1TB SSD Internal?

I do too. I have this love-hate relationship with Apple mostly because of this issue.

Apple giveth the RAM and taketh away the storage.

We do this to ourselves. We love just about everything else about new Mac releases - except for the storage price gouging.

If I didn't love everything else about MacOS, I'd be pretty turned off by Apple's mark ups here. I appreciate the R&D that preceded the release and am excited about Apple Silicon, but internal storage upgrades make my fillings ache.

Agreed. Even gamers should be pleased with how World of Warcraft plays on this beauty. ;p
$200 upcharge to go from 256GB base model to 512GB. Crazy

Which one is best using T5 connectivity?

Cute and fun, but mine will likely be mounted under my desk or on the back of or behind my monitor.

Thermal performance evaluation is a priority in my opinion. All Silicon Minis so far have handed thermals very well.

Because you can charge $400 and make $396 in profit.

I share the same concern..

I am confident that a mechanical engineer that solved the rear button problem, can make a slim mechanical solution that will solve this for rack mounted situations.

Also it appears that thermal cool air goes in the front, and hot air out the back. That is effectively what we want in Rack mounted containment situations in our datacenters. Perhaps it will require a special jacket to prevent rebreathing, but I doubt they would design it to suck in its own hot air.

I don't think rack-mounted Minis are going to be a thing of the past with this lineup.

I will mount mine under my desk if I get one, there will be mounts made for this little thing in days I expect. My work laptop is mounted under there already, add one more under there. With a nice cable tray my standing desk is crazy clean for having 6 screens on it and two full keyboard and mouse setups. I have about 200 feet of cables hidden under there... Only one wire headed to the power outlet coming off my desk.

Then the power button will be simple to hit at least!

It shrank and grew in the wrong dimensions. Not only doesn't it fit a 1U rack space anymore, as it is too high, now they even make it incredibly inconvenient to reach the power switch. Hard pass for me. Hoped to finally upgrade my rack with a powerful desktop unit.
Think vertical on its side. But yeah rack mounting will make powering up tougher. Someone will make something clever.

Followed closely by the Ethernet jack. I was expecting to be underwhelmed and disappointed, but I am pleased to find that I am quite whelmed and appointed!
I saw a lot from Apple but from M-times im more than happy.

Now it's time for Apple to enter gaming console market with M5 box running PS5 games and we are set for next 10 years of hell

Very impressive.

Likely trading in my base M2 Studio for an M4 Pro mini with 64GB and either 1 or 2TB storage. I made a mistake and only got 512G and have hit that limit a few times moving VMs and music around this past year. D'oh!
If you can wait for the presumed M4 studio next year I would. Usually once you heavily upgrade the Mac mini pro, the Mac Studio is basically almost the same price. Unless you gotta have that tiny form factor of course.

This page still shows the old Mac Mini and old iMac

I was quite surprised when I saw that cooling design. I’m sure they have thought it through but it does look a bit odd having the in and out airflows so close together on the same base because it’s almost certainly going to suck in some of its hot air.

OMG what they're charging for the imac screen is ridiculous. For the same price you could get a similar spec mini and an LG 40 inch 5k display which frankly would look even more sleek
I tried various monitors. not easy to get decent 220ppi. After multiple monitors I have studio displays on main desk. Second desk in workshop has dell usb-c uhd 27” set to scale to look like 2560x1440. Decent compromise but 5k 220ppi is noticeably superior.

256 storage

How did they take away storage? It's always been 256GB base...
256GB became standard in 2020 (2018 mini was 128GB min).

As I pointed out yesterday, it took 10+ years to go from 8GB RAM min to 16GB min. Give Apple another 6 years and 512GB SSD will be standard. Patience is key!

I'll be getting the M4 base model, which will be my first 'M' Mac. I already have an external 1TB SSD ready.

Get a Samsung T6 external drive. I got a 1TB for £60 and edit all my videos off it on my M1 MBP.
Does it work as seamlessly as an internal drive? Struggling with my 256GB 2015 MacBook Pro. Even though I genuinely feel I have no sizeable files on it, it always seems to struggle to have updates installed due to lack of space.
