I don’t understand this at all. It’s more expensive than the new Air with no advantage from what I can see other than a minor performance bump from having active cooling. With the new Air and the 14 MBP the refreshed 13 MBP just doesn’t fit with this lineup.
Neither did the prev. 13" fit anywhere - it was by far the worst-value offering. I don't see why anyone would have chosen it over the M1 Air or the 14".

This MacBook will continue to exist until Apple makes a "budget" version of their 14" Pro.

The only reason I can see for this to exist is the enterprise crowd that doesn't want to risk on a fanless MacBook Air.
"a "budget" version of their 14" Pro" is called the Air. And has always been called ever since the release of the M1 Air. And now, finally, the Air may approach or even surpass the speed of the 14" with the M2 now.

I'm so confused. Also why does this older design that they clearly just threw an M2 chip into without doing anything else cost MORE than the redesigned MBA? I don't get it.

Because i don't want to thermal-pad an air, and fans actually do help when using it for extended workload?
I have the 13" Pro and i never ever regretted getting it over the Air.
I do like the touchbar and was sad to see it go although i agree it makes no sense to still offer it since it's essentially dead. mind you, it wasn't when the M1 13" came out, the 2020 16" i9 still had the touch bar.

And 14" wasn't sold for a year after M1 13" came out.

What "model" is this comparable to?

I have a 2017 15", and LOVE the Touchbar. Aside from the screen size, is this a big jump?
yes absolutely, this will be around 2-3x as fast and capable as your 15" all while being dead silent.

It's for the people who like the Touch Bar and don't like MagSafe (of which I am definitely not one of)
I’d like both. I’ve had the 2020 version for about a month now. Rarely get to use it. But I can see where the Touch Bar isn’t utilized as much as it could be.

I do miss MagSafe. I haven’t had a MacBook in maybe 8 years but I’ve almost knocked the power cable off a couple of times, expecting it to just pop off.

The performance difference is minimal. I would have chosen the M1 Air instead of the M1 13" any time if I haven't had the money for a 16" M1 Pro. Why pay for gimmicks like the touchbar?

Prolly they're making this the worst (or, should I say, least popular) choice of the lineup (just like back in the M1 times) as they want to finally get rid of it entirely? They've done something similar quite often: see for example the dumbed-down iPod Touches.

I had the touchbar on the 2018 i9 and 2018 i5 13" and i liked and used it on both. It was well implemented in logic (custom shortcuts) and affinity (brush sizes and stuff).

When the M1 Pro came out and touch bar was essentially rendered dead, i wouldn't have gotten the 13" Pro with TB either. But I got the M1 13" Pro the moment it got out, it was a different context than it was later with 14" and 16" Pro/Max out, and the thermal pad hacks weren't known, and the 10% performance gain was despite everything still appealing.
edit: ALSO, the 13" Pro has a better screen.

I still don't regret the decision and i also like the design better than the wedge.

Wouldn't get an M2 13" Pro over Air now at all.

I wonder how the M2 MBP performance compares with the MBP M1 Max for music production.

They must have a lot of old MBPro chassis laying around to sell the 13.3" pro like that with an m2

Users: Apple you've really got to give us better web cams on your Macs to make things like video conference calls better.
Apple: We've got great news for you! Now you can spend $1000 more to buy an iPhone, and then another $100 for an overpriced magnet to improve your video conference calls.
Users: 🤦‍♂️

It's worse...

it's 4 performance + 4 efficiency cores, vs 8 performance + 2 efficiency cores.
and M1 Max isn't better than M1 Pro for music production anyway.
Thanks. I meant M1 Pro. I always get confused between the two.

Really don't understand the point of this. The only tangible benefit I can see is the fan. How many people require the sustained performance that the fan can bring but yet only require a consumer class processor?

What a weird product line to keep around. Performance-wise it seems on par with the MBA? In an older body with a worse screen? But it's a "pro" machine...hm
Having a fan means it can sustain that performance. This is the most portable Mac for anyone doing video editing/encoding or 3D work.

1729€ for the cheapest M2 MacBook Air with 16GB RAM in Germany. Just WOW. Seems to be like an excellent laptop, but with such prices, selling my Mac mini M1 and upgrading to an M2 MBA seems like not worth it unfortunately.

They're essentially the same for Music so doesn't matter anyway :)

And yeah there's no way M2 outperforms an M1 Pro 10core. Maaaaybe it will come close to the M1 Pro 8-core in the 14"?
