Neither did the prev. 13" fit anywhere - it was by far the worst-value offering. I don't see why anyone would have chosen it over the M1 Air or the 14".
Better battery life. This still has the best battery life of any Mac. I wish they had upgraded the design and it's a very strange decision not too, but maybe they are placating the "I like the Touch Bar" people or maybe supply chain issues. (It would have likely been even weirder to upgrade the design and not use mini-LED?)

I rarely use the static Function keys, with their most frequent usage typically being Volume Up/Down/Mute and Brightness keys - all of which are most always present in Touch Bar. However, since Touch Bar, I have found myself interacting with that strip way more than I ever did when it was static. I find Touch Bar way more interesting/useful, for my specific needs. Clearly, not everyone feels the same.

That said, this updated MBA makes the base 13" MBP now seem even more of a curious offering. Even as one who really likes Touch Bar, I can't see why I (or anyone debating between the two devices) would chose the updated 13" MBP.
Maybe by keeping the Touch Bar around, Apple's team is trying to save face with their previous design choices.

What a bizarre device in the line up, the Air gets a redesign but the Pro doesn’t?
I guess they were trying to clear out the excess inventory of the 2020 Intel MBP clamshells that they still had? Either that or I guess it is something to help them mitigate current supply-side issues. Maybe the lockdown in Shanghai had something to do with it...

So for someone who is not a heavy user such as myself who has the 2020 M1 Pro this probably isn't worth the upgrade right?

My 2020 MacBook Pro has an escape key.
Yes I am still a little out of date. I have the 2017 with the first generation TouchBar. The second generation TouchBar added the physical escape key.

Not sure why there is so much TouchBar hate. It is so much more useful than the function keys. I use the TouchBar every day. I never used the function keys.

I agree. Even if you want the function keys one has to hold down the FN key and gets them.

Why dont you like the touch bar? I dont know what I'd do without it.
I don't hate it- I just don't use it that much and now that I have a MBP M1 Max, have grown to prefer the physical keys again.

But, you make a great point-- my best guess is that Apple have kept it around for the heavy TouchBar users. And if so, I'm happy for you!

Good response. Personally I dont need a MBP with a SD card slot and multiple ports. 2 ports is enough for my usage and when I plug my Canons in I use a USB cable not a SD card reader.

No people generally don't upgrade their Macs every cycle. If you are dying for the upgrade I am sure you could get good value selling your old device. My 2017 MacBook Pro that I got used is still running strong, and I would put myself as an above average user.

I think Apple made a big step backwards removing the Touch Bar on the Bigger Pros. If for some reason people wanted the 1970s Function Keys then fine they could have added that below the Touch Bar. I get that people like more keys to add custom commands to. But the Touch Bar served that purpose.

The other option would be OLED Keys.

People wondering who this 13" Pro is for, well for someone like me who wants the existing design with new spec's.

I really hate the boxy design language of the new Macbook's (and notch and black keyboard area), so much so that I wasn't even going to consider an Apple laptop if at least one of the range didn't keep the old classic tapered design. Would have been nice to see Magsafe though because it effectively has one USB port.

I've also always wanted the Touch Bar since it debuted. I think it's a mistake that Apple didn't stick with it and throw more development weight behind it. People have wanted 'screens on keys' for decades and everyone has tried to do it at some point, Apple had the best chance to make it stick.

Just an update with M2 chip. But don’t see any reason why anyone should be buying this model. Only useful thing in it is the fan. Buy the Air or upgrade to 14” MacBook Pro.

I know some people dig it. Personally, I tried to like it and use it for years, but imo the Touch Bar sucks. You have to look at it to use it – clicking on something on the regular display is just as easy, if not easier.
Muscle-memory availability of brightness-, play and audio-control-keys are much bigger benefits to my OS-experience..

I previously made a mental note that I can only remove my Touch-Bar-bashing forum signature once Apple have finally stopped selling any models with it 😭

The M1/M2 air are both cheaper and better than this. If someone already had an M1 MBP then why would they upgrade to this? They wouldn’t.
This product really has no meaning in the lineup
The meaning of it is to make money for apple. Which it presumably will.

This should have been called a MacBook.
What's not Pro about this laptop:
- Limited ports (HDMI, more than Thunderbolt USB-C, etc)
- Limited to 1 external monitor
- Touch bar
- Low base and max memory
It’s just a name. Untwist your knickers.

Messy lineup. They should have just killed it.
No, this Mac has a function and fills the needs for certain people. Just because it doesn't cater to you doesn't mean it should be killed. Also, Apple openly stated, that the 13" MBP is their 2nd best selling notebook. They aren't going to kill something that outsells even their new 14" and 16" lineup.

Absolutely agree. I never understood the Touchbar hate. I just hope Apple will continue to support the Touchbar with future versions of macOS and Apple apps (FCP, Logic, etc.)
