It doesn’t really change anything for the majority of us lol, I would watch it online anyway

Let’s reflect back for a second, at least be appreciative we have the technology where we can still watch the event via the Internet. I understand the precautions being taken, but like you said, millions of us will watch it online, even for the select crowd that Would have been attending.

That's a bit early IMO... We're not even in spring yet. By June the issue will most likely be over if China is a good indication.

These events cannot provide the same kind of experience remotely. The random run-ins with peers from different companies. Strolling along booths to find interesting stuff. Online sessions are more captivating if you can't just open a facebook window beside it. And being physically there it's easier to really immerse yourself. Colleagues will understand when you're incommunicado during this time. When you're in the office watching they'll bother you anyway with their 'quick question' because you're 'only doing some online thing'. It's really not the same at all.

PS: I never would attend WWDC anyway but I sure missed MWC when it was cancelled. Though there was no option there, it was too close to the start of the pandemic. But I think moving major events online shouldn't become the standard.

In other news, doesn't the WWDC artwork remind you of a MacBook laptop covered in stickers?

Could this hint at a possible teaser or reveal of an ARM-based MacBook during the event?
Good eye! I didn’t notice that.
As fun as it to speculate, i don‘t think the artwork has ever really held cryptic clues.

The benefit to these conferences, glad handing. Making personal connections. The product side easily handled by today’s technology. I suspect the future conferences will continue to move more towards technology with smaller numbers of attendees.

I beg to differ:
2013 WWDC artwork - clearly hinting at redesigned iOS 7

This will be different. I am wondering about the labs and the products too as people will not be able to try the new products in this manner.

Oh my God I have cracked it. The entire poster is a silver Mac book pro. And the "hello" a reference to the iMac launch.
There is a new Mac book pro getting launched. Possibly a 13 inch with smaller footprint. Or same footprint with slightly larger display.

Hoping they announce a transition to ARM on the Mac. If I remember correctly, last time they announced it early and rolled out various Intel Macs over the coming year or so. Would really love to get a 14" MBP with like a 16-core ARM CPU.

I'm already imagining a WWDC portal on the developer site with virtual Labs, live chat/forum or something, etc...

(I know it'll never happen, but I'll just keep dreaming.)

I don't know, if they host virtual labs they'll have thousands of people interested, even if they don't ask for money I wonder how they'll decide who can attend to this virtual meetings.
It's not like you can argue with Tim when he's presenting. Meetings for the technical part can be done via "super chat" etc... lol

The aggressive response to this outbreak by government and business alike is notable compared to actions (or lack thereof) for the H1N1 (swine flu) in 2009. That outbreak killed an estimated 12,500 people in the United States with 60 million infections, (CDC summary statistics - 2009 H1N1 Pandemic (H1N1pdm09 virus).

So, while the collective response may seem draconian to some, no one wants a repeat of the H1N1 pandemic. It's unfortunate that so many events are being canceled. Hopefully, it will help to minimize the number of deaths.

It’s necessary for the foreseeable future and safe-guarding of the public/employee's. Apple is just one of the many companies making these transitions, it’s not really even an ‘option’ any more.
What about us the University students/TAs/RAs?

Bummer. I was hoping to take part first time this year. I'm also hoping that the virus will have blown over by June. It rattled china for about 2-3 months so it would be in the same timeline for western countries.

Hopefully they take a few cues from Nintendo Directs. They have really nailed how to present information to consumers in those digital directs, instead of a physical show (like E3) to the point that Sony and Microsoft are copying them now and E3 is crumbling.
