It will help Apple gain back some market share nonetheless in due time, and it may also bring a different business avenue by utilizing more of a cloud based system with lower flash storage options throughout the lineup. I think Apple totally went back to the drawing board, and both new iPhones will sell very very well.
To ask more of your question - it will also give an easier way to adopt to the Apple ecosystem, and at the moment, with the market being flooded with close to 12,000 Android devices, this is a great way for Apple to gain back some of the market share they want in certain target areas they may have lost in the recent market trend of an increase of smartphones with the price point they've had.
Basically, Apple has/had to make a more affordable phone for certain markets. At the same time, they easily may have increased their opportunity of a group sale because, if you think simplisitically, when you goto Verizon, AT&T, etc... you(and your fam) will be more inclined to purchase all iPhones instead of cheaper subsidized Android phones(if you shall choose iOS as you should). You and your family now have 2 options at 2 price points, and many youngsters will want this poly-colored iPhone over the better iPhone... And better yet, it will be cheaper. You may even want it...
2 is always better than one...
The hope is that it'll be inexpensive enough off-contract to tempt me to upgrade both my kids' iphone 4's to iphone's with a 4 inch screen and iOS 7.

Hmmm I usually don't like when products are rushed to market. Means corners have been cut. I don't expect this from Apple however.
I'm curious if Apple is going to announce a refreshed iPod Touch on Sept 10th. It generally takes a backseat to the iPhone and iPad, but if the 5C is A6 powered, I could totally see an iPT updated to that SoC as well.
If not - and depending on the 5C pricing - the 5C might make a more attractive option (since it would also be a backup phone for the family, but mostly used in "iPT mode")

I also misread the headline...I thought it said ship by early September, meaning delivery, but it actually reads as they will start shipping in early Sept...which means iOS has 2 weeks left to finalize.
Wouldn't be shocked to have an iOS update right out of box though.

Last two times I got my new iPhones through AT&T but the process seemed really screwed up. Couldn't get accurate status, wait was long and indeterminate, website useless.
Maybe better results through Apple Online. Wish there was an Apple Store closer than 200 miles.

Don't say that! I want to replace my iphone4 and the C might just be the right one for me (price wise anyway!!!)

September/October is going to be a great time to be ordering new Apple stuff.
I've really missed the buzz on MR when Apple starts to push out new products.
Hopefully, the stock will continue to climb as in the 'good old days' a year or so ago and I can sell a few of my remaining shares and get down to ordering new iPads and maybe even a phone.

I'm more surprised that this year there arent any people saying how iPhone5s i going to be called iPhone 7 due to iOS 7 and so on
