Apple is introducing improved benefits for its retail employees in order to attract and retain workers in the current labor market, reports Bloomberg.

Updated benefits are applicable to both full time and part time employees, with Apple now offering 12 paid sick days, up from six. Sick days can be used for mental health leave, illnesses, or taking family members to the doctor.

Apple is also providing more vacation days, with an increase in the available vacation days coming after three years of employment instead of five years of employment. Vacation days will be offered to part time employees for the first time, with Apple providing up to six paid vacation days per year.

Part time employees are now eligible for up to six weeks of paid parental leave and will have the option to ramp up work time for the first four weeks when returning, and Apple is also offering part time workers access to discounted emergency backup care for children or elderly family members.

Many companies have been having trouble retaining retail staff amid the pandemic, leading to staffing shortages. In response, companies have upped wages for employees, and, as Apple is doing, added expanded benefits to be competitive with other businesses. Apple's updated benefits will be available starting on April 4.

Overall great benefits but focus on offering more💰 bonuses or stock bonuses as compensation. That will attract the workers to stay.

This approach can be applied to retail workers too.

How hideously backward. A whole 12 days paid sick leave? No holiday pay in the first 3 years?

Utterly disgusting.
I’ve been working for the government for 5 years now and the government encourages us to take the vacation right after the probation period is over. Sometimes it’s within 6 months or 1 year.

Maybe it’s time to send my curriculum, although I’m not sure how easy could be to apply/get a part time job at Apple (having no kids or family).

By the way, does anyone know how difficult would be in the future to jump from retail to Apple Inc. itself (to one of its many areas, translation, localization, testing…) in Europe? My only handicap is that I don’t code or know anything about coding (I’ve tried to learn, but it’s impossible). Basically I ask this because even I love the retail or even genius role, I understand most people get fired as they age and get old… sadly ageism is still a thing, and one society isn’t actively fighting.

Thank you.

LOL no vacation for 3 years? (Edit: okay that’s better, referring to comment below me) I mean I guess most are part time, but I would expect more from Apple. Perhaps someone can comment the profits their stores actually produce. We know “sales number” but the profits come from cutting out middle men like bestbuy and Costco.

YOU GET VACATION TIME IMMEDIATELY WHEN YOU ARE HIRED AS AN APPLE RETAIL EMPLOYEE.

YOU GET ADDITIONAL VACATION TIME AFTER THREE YEARS WITH THE COMPANY, INSTEAD OF FIVE.

Apologies for the All Caps, but this thread is going to get out of hand quickly due to misunderstanding (and the original MacRumors article could use some editing to note it is "additional vacation time after three years").

Normally when your probation period is over that’s when you can start taking a vacation. It seems like that’s not the case at all. Gotta wait 3 years 😞
Yeah, 3 years is a little much. I can't believe that it was 5 years before that. They probably have a large percentage of employees that don't make it past the 5 year mark so they end up not having to pay out for that benefit.

EDIT: Looks like a misunderstanding..

Ok, so I did interpret it correctly. :)

That makes much more sense.

That's what I thought too, but the article doesn't say that. Is that a fact?

The article actually does say that - "Apple is also providing more vacation days..." so that means you get some when you start, and then more after three years (previously five). I do wish it said "with this additional vacation time available after three years of employment instead of five years."
