Vacation time after 3 years?!?

I had 14 days immediately when I started with a former employer.
You begin to accrue vacation time immediately, but the amount of time you earn per pay period increases after 5 years (now three years).
 
Overall great benefits but focus on offering more? bonuses or stock bonuses as compensation. That will attract the workers to stay.


This approach can be applied to retail workers too.
Baristas at Starbucks get stock options. Apple can surely do this too.

You don't get paid vacation until 3 years? Is that common?
No, you get more vacation time after 3 years of service. This is not saying you have to wait 3 years to get the time. Some companies start people with 2 weeks, then after X years they get 3 then after x years get 4
 
I have mixed feelings. There are things I love and things I hate.
I assume this is similar for you

Oh yeah agree. There are many things I dislike.

But I can also say the same about my home country tbh. Love the approach to holiday/health care in the UK. But energy/fuel prices are insane for instance.
 
Weak. Raise the starting pay to $25 p/h and offer 30 days PTO after six months.
For a retail job requiring no higher education or skills? Boy, you sho is crazy.

Better idea, offer tuition reimbursement and get them into tech sector jobs where their education justifies the pay they get.

Every time we raise wages on unskilled labor, it diminishes the return on what people who went to college that had to train in a field earn. Hell, there are people with college degrees now looking at McDonald's pay saying hey... I only make a few dollars more than that in this entry level job....

It probably also feeds into why we have everyday drivers doing errands in “tactical urban assault tanks”
 
My employer gives it staff unlimited sick leave
Employers + government give Maternity Leave
We get universal healthcare
We get 4 weeks Mandate holidays a year + statutory holidays
We have universal accident coverage, so no lawyer gets to keep 50+%
We have 20 hours of free child care for children between 2-5 years
No one goes bankrupt due to healthcare costs

Our families are our wealth.

Agree from an eco stand point that artificially lowered prices aren’t great.

Thing is though in the UK that isn’t the case. Most vehicles are pretty small to be honest (over 50mpg or even higher). And more than half are using manual transmission (stick/shift) which typically use a lot less fuel.

But on the other hand you do have a point about the battle tanks ?

So many Americans have no idea how screwed we all get by MegaCorps over here.

I honestly think some of them don't even "believe" the stories about other countries.
Admitting it would mean acknowledgment of an unfairly underwhelming existence.

or.. the other pervasive nonsense here is that "the rest of the world is lazy" and "Americans work so much harder" and "America makes things and does things nobody else can -- enabled by our crap work conditions/arrangements"

It's all just gaslighting from US MegaCorps and their lobbying/media interests

Here in the U.K. my employer gives me 25 days paid time off plus the option for 25 unpaid days extra from day 1. There are also a handful of paid bank holiday days as well and I thought we were behind the times with that! As for sick leave though now that is another story. My current employer paid me 100% of my salary when I had a couple of months off for an operation, my first employer (a so called upmarket supermarket) was the total opposite and they had a go at you for daring to be off sick.
 
It’s sad how workers get treated in the US. It’s always work work work. My family is Italian and I’ve been there 7 times now. People there are healthier and happier than people in the US. Hey at least apple treats their employees like they treat their customers. Amazon treats their employees like slaves who are in high school and their customers like royalty. I’ve always wanted to work fir apple.

Wow. I’m from from Iceland and these “better benefits” are sad.

We get at least 2 days accumulated a month, equaling 24 days of payed vacation in the first year. This also applies to hourly workers.

On that first year, payed leave rights and sick leave minimums are calculated in a similar way. Meaning you also have 24 days sick leave that first year.

After a year, your sick leave is then minimum 2 months a year.

Unions are mandatory btw

Edit: What I forget to mention: Parental leave can be up to 14 months (!) if both parents split the time and one of them takes a minimum of 2 months, otherwise it‘s 12 months. You get like 65% of your usual sallary (there is a cap, so it does not go above a certain amount).

Canada is similar, dont have kids so I dont have the details top of mind. Some employers like mine help bridge the gap between what the government provides and your salary.
 
Is this part of the US culture of not discussing salary? I get 26 PTO days per year along with 9 paid holidays after being with my company for 3 years, I started with 22, after 8 years I get unlimited PTO.
 
Yes. Full time Apple retail employees get 12 vacation days (up from 6) and part time employees get 6 vacation days (up from 0) during the first year. This is an add on to sick-days, holidays. After 3 years you get more vacation days.
That makes sense. 6 days isn't a whole lot, but then again I'm not certain what is standard for retail workers.

My Job/Life in Germany:
30 paid vacation days, 20 paid children care days, 2 days off after max. 5 working days, thirteenth salary, holiday pay, profit sharing, weekend/holiday surcharge, corporate paid 24/7 accident insurance for the whole family (work and free time), corporate benefits, private employee health and pension benefits, health insurance (employee pays for one person (himself), but the whole family is insured -> called Family Health Insurance), paid parental leave, paid maternity leave, free education incl. university...and so on. Please don't get me wrong: Germany has also problems, but not such fundamental ones.

The American dream is over; and was always just an illusion. You want a peaceful and satisfying life in the future, but your parents are poor and have no money for your education? Good Luck! Or start to be an ******* and rip the people off. The american social system is protecting only the rich people by supressing equal oppurtunity. Reminds me of middle age; antisocial.

In Germany Apple luckily has to comply with the German and EU Law. Thats why Apple Retail Workers in Germany are definitely happier than their US colleagues. ;)
 
As a European, reading stuff like this is always so jarring against the familiar backdrop of American exceptionalism so often touted by U.S. politicians. These benefits -- while an improvement -- are laughable in comparison to those benefits widely enjoyed and expected by many European workers. If America is truly The Greatest Nation on Earth, you would expect its largest employers to offer world-class pay and working conditions, right? Don't get me wrong, I love America and (most) Americans, I just find it sad that corporate America gets away with so much, and is so seldom held to account by politicians.

To Apple those retail workers are disposable anyways, and few could even work a full year I’d imagine, assuming no personal issue outside of work preventing them from working.

Whether this “benefit update” matches the working condition and effort is another thing, but I have seen quite a handful of people might not enjoy working at Apple Store as much as outside people would assume when doing shopping and Genius Bar appointment. Maybe the better benefit could let more people enjoy their work at Apple Store.
 
In Austria I get 25 paid vacation days and paid bank holidays. And I’d rather have 30 paid vacation days and a 4 day 32 hours work week.

But what’s up with you, usa? always working and no play makes homer a dull boy. I really feel sorry for you guys.
