It's hilarious how far to the right this forum leans.

I'm not really sure why you are saying this, but if it's in context with the stock awards remember this: they had to be approved by Apple's BOD, and who is Apple's most famous BOD? I'd say Al Gore. So if this forum is on the right it's backing up Al Gore.

But I don't think these matters are left or right. If you want to keep top notch management you have to pay them. This is hardly a big money grab. The shares don't even vest until 2013 and 2016. Apple stock could be worthless by then if they run the company into the ground.

If you don't like it perhaps you should relocate to a another country where "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need" is the economic motto.

You mean, a country like Germany, for example? A country where CEOs don't get paid 1000x more than their workers, yet the country is at the height of its economic performance, with german companies making record profits even in the middle of a worldwide recession, with the country approaching full employment, and all that despite the fact that they have to keep supporting all the bankrupt PIIGS countries? I have worked for a huge German company for 5 years and a huge US company for 4 years, and I have to say that the germans are light years ahead of everyone else in how to successfully create and sustain a prosperous and balanced society. I guess they learned something from the hell that their country's gone through.

I am a shareholder and right now don't care about dividends. Apple is a growth stock, maybe someday they will pay dividends again. I would rather the growth continue on the current pace.

:apple:

Yup, gotta provide incentives to keep the talent at Apple or Apple wouldn't be at the top of the phone, laptop, mp3 player markets (for the last few years).

Stock holders can't complain much as AAPL has been strong, especially when you consider how volatile the market is/was.

I'm not being sarcastic but if that is your dream society why don't you move there, work hard , become the CEO of one of these large corporations, and demand the same pay as the high school dropout working at McDonalds!

Enjoy your FAIR life in a BALANCED life in Germany where everyone is equal! America isn't like that - People can achieve whatever they strive for, .. whether people like you (or your President) like it or not.

I think it's a ridiculous sum of money to be paid out to people who are essentially just doing their jobs.

It's no different than buying component futures. Cook is preventing competitors from poaching his executive team. Loyalty only goes so far. These guys could work anywhere given their track record. Many companies need a better CEO.

Wow, that's incredibly naive. People can't achieve whatever they strive for... that's an incredibly idealistic and unrealistic view.

I think a lot of Americans don't realise that intervention by the government can be good. Consider Germans are entitled to 28 days paid holiday a year (just based on a quick google search) if they work full time. The average US worker takes about 13 a year, and that's often unpaid. I know where I'd rather be an employee...

I love this post. Makes you wonder, America is not quite the "greatest country in the world" anymore. In fact, it's behind a lot of other westernized countries. (Germany, France, UK, Australia, Canada, Italy, Switzerland, Norway, Belgium) It appears to me that the mix of democracy and socialism in these countries is working a lot better than our "pull up your bootstraps, every man for himself" capitalism. If I had the opportunity or money to move to one of those countries I would, because America makes me sick more often than not. The politics, the greed, the ignorance, the reality shows, the unhealthy and anti environmental habits, etc. Oh, and not to mention that ABSURDLY EXPENSIVE higher education I have to put myself into debt for, then find out I can't find a job in my field...

I hope you are aware that Germany (and Nordic countries even more so) has much better social mobility than the USA? Which means that more people can "achieve whatever they strive for" there, than in the US?

Is this mentality that needs to eradicated of the human race is ever going to grow up and evolve into the next phase of peace and harmony. Why shouldn't we help one another out and do what will bring happiness to the most people. We are in this together. We are all one on this planet. Stop being so damn selfish and start thinking as one big community, not just the individual. And as others have stated, Germany has more social mobility than America, so they can achieve whatever they want, just like the ole U. S. of A. Not too mention, they produce better products and they are way ahead of us in education.

Apparently it does no good to explain and reexplain how every financial arrangement made by Apple, from top CEO pay to low wages at FoxxCon, from flash and LCD screen supplier arrangements to retail sales transactions, and of course, stock sales and trades, are all 100% free and voluntary arrangements. If, at any level, "exploitation" is occurring, it a) does not occur in secret, and b) transpires with willing and often enthusiastic participation by all parties involved. It's really hard, then, to label it "exploitation" with any credibility without watering down the term itself to near meaninglessness.

No, it's all "eat the rich". Draw completely arbitrary lines in the income ranges, give each segment its own clever name (upper, upper middle, middle lower middle, working classes, and poor) and set them against one another as if the "class" you were born to is branded to your forehead, destined to be the one you die in. Class envy is the easiest way to incite mob violence, as it appeals to the basest instincts in mankind. BTW this is why sociology cannot ever be deemed a real science: correlations are easy to find if you manipulate the data to your liking, but causality is almost impossible to establish and experiments cannot be replicated and independently tested. It's all tea leaves and best guesses.

Apple is to be commended for their work to preserve the company, which benefits all its corporate partners, all of its employees, and, ultimately, all of its consumers.

It has been said that Marxism/Leninism has been utterly defeated as an ideology except for a few small remaining strongholds:

  • China
  • Cuba
  • Venezuela
  • Laos
  • Vietnam
  • North Korea

  • and US college and university campuses.

Now we can add MR forums and OWS gatherings to that list as well. I guess it's like a horror movie villain that you stab and stab but just won't die. Swing harder, Ronnie!

Go read your original post there Big Boy where you were Bragging "where CEOs don't get paid 1000x more than their workers"...

So in your Utopia a person can achieve whatever they strive for, .... so long as it's not "1000x more then their workers"....

I'll take my chances in America where ANYONE who is creative and works hard can become a Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Larry Page, or Mark Zuckerberg.

Unfortunately they'll always be people like you. Uninterested in hard work, uninterested in education. Uninterested in working hard for the dream. No, it's much easier to Whine on an internet forum all day (Booo Hooo) and demand that the Gates', Jobs', and Page's of the world have their hard earn money STOLEN and GIVEN to you for FREE Health Insurance (Oh BOOOO HOOOO I can't stand it).

PLEASE evil billionaires, give Goratrix and the rest of the Liberals ANOTHER FREE Handout!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, the right really got you didn't they?!

I'll take my chances here, where I'll be getting better employment rights (almost 7 weeks paid leave, long term sick pay if needed, protection from unfair dismissal, paternity leave etc), free healthcare at the point of service, better consumer rights, government student loans for all etc. Yeah, liberal societies suck! :D

You should've come here (Sweden) to get your degree. Up until last year, it was free for all. (See, i dont mind paying high taxes to provide non-swedes with education. Shocker, ey?)

p.s. i saw people talking about vacation. we (sweden) have five weeks mandated by law. fully paid*. most have more though. usually, with age, days are added on.

* in fact, your holiday pay is higher than your standard one. vacation bonus, of sort.

Ironically, two of the four persons you have named are part of the buffett gates pledge. Further, all four would've done what they did even if they would never get rich out of it. You see, that part is yet another poor myth that the capital wishes to uphold. That without cash incentives, there will be no creativity. No nothing, really.

Swing and a miss, really.

Hahaha, you do realise that the 1% spend gazillions on media, self-help, propaganda to make you think like this. Dude, America has a good standard of living compared to most of the world, but America's in large part rich in large part because after the end of Breton Woods the $ become the world's reserve currency giving the states a huge competitive advantage. This is coming to an end now.

The US falls way down the list behind a long list of mixed economy nations across many different outcomes.

'Oooh, don't tax the uber-rich just in case in, by some huge fluke, I may join them one day'.

And free health care is excellent. I was able to quit my job (freeing up a job) and go freelance without worrying about the huge expense of paying for healthcare independently. What makes you think universal benefits make people lazy? In many European nations you can get a degree for free, meaning anyone can see social mobility regardless of Daddy's trust fund. And America's the land of getting ahead? Hahahah.

Even Henry Ford knew that you had to pay workers well else the market for the kind of goods he was making would be very small. Soon today's CEOs will wonder, 'If the middle class have been downsized, off shored, pay-froxen, their money inflated to worthlessness, and made to pay $$$$ for what used to be free, who they heck is going to buy our crap?'

UK seems quite nice, at least parts of it. I hope to get the time to work a semester at LSE some time in the future. If it just werent for that ****** climate ;- )

No doubt socialist societies are GREAT for Lazy folks like yourself!! Again, enjoy all that time off work and all your FREE Handouts!! Please stay there! At least you're not a burden on the American taxpayers.
