I don't know, I think this is a cute story...

I mean being in my twenties, I think some of us can learn from this lady... actually saving up for something that we really want before getting it? you mean without credit?!?

To sit their and save up for something and then go and try and get this thing that she really really wanted... and then be turned down... thats so upsetting.

Glad it worked out for her!

I feel sorry for her, buying the iPad as her only computer. She could do so much more with a cheaper netbook. I guess she got swept up in the hype, like so many others.

Nice of Apple, but really an amazingly inexpensive PR stunt that benefits Apple because people are suckers and believe somehow that it was done because Apple really cares about equality. If they genuinely did, they'd clean up their act in China!
Having said that, I am very happy for the lady that she got a free ipad. that's wonderful!
Well, yes it's a PR stunt, surprised? I do agree that people tend to like this kind of stuff, but blame it on them - that's why the companies are doing it.
And about Apple cleaning their act in China. That's getting old. At least say Everyone cleaning their act in China. It's like saying that only Mercedes cars are polluting.

A delightful story.
Unfortunately, those two employees that delivered the iPad were immediately fired afterward. "Force of habit" an HR rep was quoted as saying, "it's all automated now." :D

I'm very sorry to say this, but you must have a serious mental disorder when you decide to blow 500 bucks on a toy when you are on a FIXED INCOME.

Also kudos to Apple for just giving her a free one.

You mean like the one that has been cited and linked many times in this very thread? Go do your own research and stop being lazy.

I am not going to go look for it, but there is no law that requires businesses to take cash.

It doesn't exist. Retailers do not have to take cash or any other form of payment they do not wish to take.

The government itself has to take cash, no person or store does.

1) Kudos to this woman. The more people with iPads out there, the more exposure/market penetration. I don't care what her financial status is, and neither should you.
2) Kudos to Apple for getting this right, finally. For a company who is usually spot on with its public image, the no cash policy could have only ended badly in the public eye. With the recent negative press (articles like "Has Apple Become Microsoft"), you just knew some small kid with his saved coin jar or old lady who, for whatever reason, wanted to pay with the cash from under the mattress would get rejected, the story picked up, and spun five ways to Sunday against Apple. I was flipping through radio stations in the car and Dave Ramsey, a financial advice guru who advocates living debt free and is generally anti-credit card railing against Apple. His spin was that Apple just wanted the demographic information on its customers that is so readily accessible when you purchase with a personally identifiable method of payment.
3) Boo to the majority of the threads on here. Criticisms of this woman's circumstances ( of which you know very little), the uninformed posts concerning the "need for credit cards to build credit" and "you're required to take cash in the US", the frank elitism exhibited...

Apparently Apple has never read a dollar bill before. It's FEDERAL LAW that all businesses and persons must accept cash for all payments.

Seriously?

That is not what it says... I will reiterate, the government has to accept that money, no person is obligated to accept cash for anything, unless they are representing the government.

It is NOT federal law that all businesses and persons must accept cash.

I refuse your cash offers to help you understand the law. See right there... I proved you wrong. I only accept amex and discover.

I had thought that federal law requires the acceptance of U.S. currency notes (i.e., cash) for monetary transactions. Isn't that what the statement "This note is legal tender for all debts, public and private", on every dollar bill, is about?

I'm guessing Apple became clued in that they were violating federal law with a "no cash" policy, and that the reasons Apple gave for the change in policy are spin.

But that's just a guess.

It is legal tender meaning it can be legally exchanged for payments. Like for years Gold was illegal to own in the US as a private citizen.

Just because it is legal to use it as tender to pay people with does not mean it requires anyone to accept it.

That is where I think people get confused. All that is saying is that the instrument is legal in the US to be used to pay debt. Someone could require you give them a dozen eggs instead.

Why does a nice gesture by Apple lead to do many negative comments? This has nothing to do with the need for a checking account, a computer, or other things she could/should have purchased.

It's a simple story of a company with an outstanding product trying to keep people from buying and reselling them thus keeping them from honest buyers. Faced with a real example of unintended hardship their policy caused, they came up with a workaround and offered up a free iPad to the woman whose story prompted the change.

Good for her, and good for Apple.

I totally agree with you. It seems that a lot of people on here are simply out of touch, bitter, and jaded.

Maybe she didn't want a cheap netbook. Maybe she wanted an ipad and thought it was worth the wait. Oh yes, look at that, she did.

But.. but.. she can't run Finite Element Analysis with an ipad!

For many people, a basic, stock iPad already does everything they want.

Ya judgemental twit.

WTF, I've never heard of a shop NOT accepting cash! I mean many shops don't accept debit cards! But cash?? Everyone has cash, but not everyone owns a debit card. This was silly... And why does Apple care about the black market? It's not really their problem I guess. The black market is probably the only way most people are going to be able to buy an iPad anyway, given the very small number of countries it will be officially selling in.

I can't believe the ignorance, rudeness, and disrespect by so many commenters on this thread.

A fixed income means her income is static. She's probably on social security and/or some combination of retirement. Why would anyone begrudge her wanting to purchase some technology? Especially a form of technology most on these forums seem to care quite a bit about. If an elderly woman scrimps on some of her typical purchases for a few weeks to buy an iPad, then more power to her.

Many people in this country do not have checking accounts, debit cards, checkbooks, or credit cards for any of numerous reasons. Some reasons are due to negligence or irresponsibility, but many are due to a lack of need or even an understanding of the methods or cultural practices. Regardless, why make disparaging comments about how a woman conducts her business? Maybe she just prefers to pay in cash. Sheesh!

Finally, I must also question why everyone seems so up in arms about the choice of device this woman made. Maybe her vision is bad and reading a book zoomed in on the iPad screen appeals to her. Whatever her reasoning, why make comments about her intelligence based on the fact that she apparently owns no other computing type device? Let her have whatever she desires.

Bottom line - the woman did nothing wrong, asked for nothing she wasn't willing to pay for, and wanted to buy a product from a company whose products we all enjoy. I find it disgusting how quickly people are to assume the worst, throw out barbs, and even try to make social/political comments with few facts at hand.

Agreed. Every time I read one of these threads, I'm amazed to see the absolute worst traits of humans exemplified in the posts.

+1000 PR points in the wake of all this Flash bull***t

I know it's a totally a corporate exercise to save face, but it's good when the less fortunate in society catch a break.

Neen to dig out my receipt

I purchased mine for cash on week one. Made a point to tell the clerk that I didn't think people should go into debt for this item. :)

Apple can't stand bad news. they make sure to kill it as soon as possible

Then maybe they should change their iPhone OS developer EULA and AppStore policy yesterday, because both generated more bad news for Apple in all developer blogs than Apple's marketing department could ever clean up.

Ya say they sold it for cash to WASPy fanbois? Apple was probably in a panic but nice gesture.

She probably is -- the -- target audience for that device: People who do not want a 'traditional' computer, but just an easy to use device to surf the Internet and read those (free) eBooks from the Amazon Kindle eBook store. I doubt that she wants to do 'more' with the iPad.
