If what the government want to achieve is more FDI from Apple, a ban seems more effective. A ban hurts Apple pretty directly. Higher tariffs on the other hand would, as you mentioned, just drive up prices for consumers.

Not every country can get away with such a policy. But it seems Indonesia is just big enough to make it work.
Is it possible apple can turn this around like a top? I guess apple could pledge x billions of dollars and the ban would be lifted. But that would seem to be blood money.

Not sure why you use such drastic words to describe something that other countries are also doing. The US has very similar policies when it comes to cars, batteries, photovoltaics and probably many other sectors. Why is it blood money, when a developing economy tries to apply the same policy?

This feels like extortion. Why not ban all apple devices? Why just the iPhone 16? Did apple get prior notice? Or was this crafted out of thin air?

Indonesia has now banned Google phones also. Funny that they haven’t banned phones from Chinese companies, even though both Google and Apple phones are manufactured in China. Perhaps they know that extortion doesn’t work against the Chinese because the Chinese will ruin them if they try.

They haven't banned Samsung phones either. Is it not because these various Samsung, Xiaomi, etc. phones meet the "40% local content" requirements?

I can tell you the orange haired president will impose tariffs or sanctions as retaliation for this.
What vital Indonesian exports do think will be impacted? Only 9% of Indonesian exports go to the US, the bulk of Indonesian exports (25%) go to China.

Trade wars are not based on logic or rationality. It’s pure emotion for the hoi polloi.
