this is interesting.

I bought one of the screen films from the apple store. It fit well and I didn't have any issues with it.

Then I looked at my buddy's iphone and saw how amazing it looked. I peeled mine off and was WOW'd at how great it was. I had been doing myself a disservice the entire time.

I'm extremely careful with it although I realize that doesn't guarantee anything.

If it's a functionality issue, then their decision is legit, but I didn't have any problems with it.

I do think it's a bit controlling however. that worries me a bit.

Cheers,
keebler

there's one reason apple is doing this and it's because of Returns only, Apple Store in London have so many of these returned and Apple has to wear the cost, the clamshell packing has been broken - apple can't resell them - the one and only good maker of this type of shield is the original POWER SUPPORT forget the rest, they don't deserve to keep ripping us off and ripping off APPLE for that matter buy selling expensive lemons they know they'll never see again because of having to destroy the packing to gain entry voids "returns" unless you're apple who generously lets almost everything be returned because they are simply a fantastic company.
POWERSUPPLYUSA should not be banned but commended for making great products, get your shields from them and them ONLY, buy once, buy right.

No need to brag, learn how to install them like the pros. Check out the installation videos I did for power support usa. :)

Yeah, it's got to the stage where everyone I know who has an iPhone or iPod touch actually asks me to apply their screen protectors for them. :D

I watched your video, and that's the exact procedure I use ... although I rub out any bubbles as I pull the adhesive cover off and apply the film. Works a treat.

Well, as of March 27, the film was still in the store.

I don't think mine is going to protect the glass from BREAKAGE. It just makes the fingerprints invisible. If I step on the thing, a thin piece of film isn't gonna do diddly squat to protect it. It MIGHT protect my foot from getting cut though. But I'm not making book on even that.

Don't know why they would remove the product. Don't much care either. I think I got my film for my iTouch from Amazon. I did get the film for my Nano at the store. The mothership at that. In February.

Very possibly a great deal of sound and fury that signifies nothing.

y.

Very possibly a great deal of sound and fury that signifies nothing.

i suspect so. if it is true that they are pulling films i see one of three possibles

1. they are about to release a new iphone with a screen that has a matte finish and better coating so the films won't be needed
2. the films don't actually sell that well overall and they need space for other stuff like all the ipad accessories
3. this was 'leaked' by some new company that is pissed that they couldn't get in on the whole film thing cause Apple is happy with the one company they are doing business with.

but it is also possible that they bought tons of stock and all that is happening is that they cut back their order cause they have plenty and someone is assuming they are going to stop carrying the goods.

As CFreymarc said on page two, this move by Apple to remove "screen protectors" from their own stores is all about making more shelf space available in the Apple Stores for iPad accessories. It's not a "ban" on screen protectors in general!

Many of you seem to think this is some sort of evil consipracy or something, but why jump to such a unfounded conclusion? These kinds of protectors have been around for several years in the Apple Stores, but now with the new devices coming and the need for space even more pronounced, it's time to lose the weakest of the products in the stores. NBD. Apple knows you can get this stuff online anyway and that it's still easy to find at AT&T, BestBuy, Wal-Mart, Amazon, and so on.

I also thought iTatoo's comment quite funny and so true! To wit:

"After thinking about it for a while, reminds me a bit of my grand mother's house and the plastic covers on the furniture ... kept it looking great so that when it was time to replace it and give it away it was really nice for the next owner (or junk yard depending on the case) and was never fully enjoyed while she owned it"

I remember those crazy plastic protectors too!

I grandparents had those all covered in plastic furniture in the 80s too but that is just half the story. A lot of these covers had to deal with keeping a house clean from elderly getting allergic reactions. But yeah, a silly fad.

Ah, I put those things on cause while the screen looks durable, didn't want to take chances. Didn't interfere with the touch honestly.

But, I don't think it's needed. Now that it is almost time to replace my iphone plus it's not brand new so I'm not as overprotective, I never bothered after the last one wore out. No scratches yet. My roommate's touch screen broke so he replaced it. We tried to see what it would take to scratch it. A screwdriver woudln't, pliers wouldn't, sandpaper would. Sandpaper did the most damage when it was on a power tool ;). But even just manually sanding the screen would damage it.

It's pretty tough.

Now, not having protectors for the macbook?! Yeah, that's stupid if they want to some how claim that they make a quality enough product it doesn't need it (HA! HA! I say!). Why not actually make the macbook tougher then if image is what they are worried about (speaking from some one who is completely unimpressed with hers, particularly the plastic which on her model was prone to cracking. And I found at least one thread talking about how the new macbook cracked too as well as seeing several comments about how the new one scratches really quick).

And yes, those protectors work. Well, at least the 3M brand ones do (I have a 3M brand film from skinit.com. Not to protect the macbook but cause it has artwork from my favorite artist of dragon artwork. It's been a year, a keyboard sits on it, and not one scratch even on the sticker. It's pretty tough. I'd say probably tougher than the macbook plastic  Particularly if the newer unibody scratches as easy as I hear ).
